Acer set to release Allegro Windows Phone this Christmas in Europe

Although we're note exactly hearing anyone clamoring for an Acer Windows Phone, at least not with the reported specs that the Allegro has on board, it's still nice to see a low to mid range offering for those in the market.

TelecomPaper is reporting that the Acer Allegro is set to go on sale in Europe this holiday season (think Christmas) for EUR 299, which ain't exactly cheap for Europe, it isn't too bad either.

We're guessing that the Allegro is simply the W4, a device we've seen making a few appearances here and there. To refresh, the W4/Allegro has the following specs:

  • 3.6-inch WVGA Capacitive screen,
  • Screen Resolution: 480×800
  • 5mp Camera with auto-focus.
  • HSPA 850/1900 or 900/2100 /GSM quad band 850/900/ 1800/ 1900 MHz Support.
  • Qualcomm MSM 8255 running at 1GHz (same processor as in the Xperia Play)
  • Wifi, Bluetooth 2.1
  • DLNA Support
  • Windows Phone Mango
  • 8GB Storage

So it's basically a Mango phone with Gen 1 features. Not bad, not great. Thanks, TheWeeBear, for the heads up!

Hopefully, if this comes to the UK, it changes it's name first...otherwise I can see the Austin comparison puns from the lazy tech press already.

jubbing says:

I yawned so hard at this phone.

You just made me laugh lol

battl3cat says:

On the contrary, i find it pretty cheap, knowing that the Omnia W and the HTC Radar are almost 80€ more expensive. That's the kind of phone which, subsidized, will be around 30€ on contract in France. Pretty nice price to help Microsoft to increase WP7 market share

GP07 says:

Exactly, A retail price of 300euros is cheap for a smartphone even if the specs aren't bleeding edge. Acer has always come in with lower priced hardware. They could very well sell this for 30 euros like you say if not totally free on a 2 year contract.

jamreal says:

some people would see this and think whats the point, but they cant just release high end windows phone, they need lower ends to start off the market too...

Muvolt says:

It's a bad choice...better buy an LG e900 which costs around 200 euros and it's a high quality devicewith an ultra solid feel. It's also more capable than this ACER because it has more memory.

futurix says:

Ultra-solid feel? Really?I think E900 feels plastic-y and flimsy.

Muvolt says:

Clearly, you haven't tried one...I'm not the only one who believes this...check out the Engadget review...this phone is solid as a rock with high quality materials. Nothing is flimsy on it. It has already dropped on my floor twice, and it didn't even got scratched, even if it's quite heavy...

theefman says:

No its not because the Acer is running a newer CPU with the Adreno 205 GPU. Will run games and apps better than the LG.

Muvolt says:

Thanks for that info...I didn't know that...

windows phone for everyone thats the point of this device

dreamerbala says:

Its good as an entry level phone. But, I cant warm up to the design. Looks too 'blocky'

The Prayer says:

LOL device information fail, it says it has a 1000 Ghz qualcom CPU XD. I want a 1.0 Thz too in my focus S20, make this happen samsung!

Neofire says:

A cheap handset with the best mobile experience out here. Someone will be happy.

GP07 says:

We'll start to see low end budget WP7 device like this more and more I bet, and it's these kinds of phones that sell the best. Lets face it, not everyone, even those who end up with a smartphone, go out and spend 500, like I did, for a retail unlocked phone.
