Activate Facebook Chat in Windows Phone "Mango" [How To]

You should know by now that Windows Phone "Mango" has Facebook Chat built in to the Messaging app (see our full Mango review). Turning it on is actually pretty simple: navigate to the Messaging (SMS) app, hit Setting and enable. Or you can do it under Settings --> Applications --> Messaging. Easy enough, so why the how to? Well, this is more a "troubleshooting" thing i.e. you're one of the very few who can't it to work.

See, since I've been running "Mango"  (nearly a month next week), I could not get Facebook Chat enabled. Yup. Every time I'd throw that lil' switch, it would ask me to setup Facebook Chat, it would then open what looks like an embedded IE window where it would return with a "Page cannot be found". Seriously. It did this dozens of times and I just thought "welp, it's not enabled yet".

Long story short: I didn't have my Facebook account linked to my Windows Live one. Who knew it was necessary? It would have been nice for an error message to explain that but alas, I was lost till I ran across Mobility Minded's excellent step by step guide on setting this up. The guide was perfect right up to the point when I had to enable the feature and bam...it still didn't work.

The solution was an extra step not in Mobility Minded's otherwise great write up: delete the Facebook account on the phone and set it up again (just name and password). The next time I headed to Messaging --> Settings, Facebook Chat was magically enabled and all is good. Of course the funny part in all of this is I don't use Facebook or Chat period, except for testing. Still, this issue was nagging me and hopefully if any of you have something similar, it'll help too.

This is the problem they need to fix. There is just too much work for the consumer to do to set up their Windows Live account appropriately. By linking my Facebook account on my phone, it should like it to my WL account by default. Same thing with Twitter and all the other services they're partnered with. And when those services get built in, they should just work.Anyway, I've been using FB chat on it for the last 2-3 weeks, I love it.

My Facebook account was already paired with Windows Live and it still wouldnt work, followed the steps and now Facebook Chat is On, however when I go to Messaging hub it tries to connect, then says cant connect to IM.had to change the FB account's password on my phone before it would allow me to delete it aswell.

Verkunder says:

Yeah, I've tried all combinations of linking, signing on and off, enabling, etc, and none of it works. Granted, I'd never use it, but would like to try it out. I'm hopeful it'll be fixed by Mango's release.

This was one of the things I was most looking forward too when I installed it. Hopefully Daniel can get more data points and get to the bottom of this at some point.

will only connect to IM if phone is connected to PC I am finding

Narr says:

For me it was enabled straight away (presumably the accounts were already linked) but I have issues connecting unless I'm on wifi. With wifi it connects 100% otherwise I have to retry a dozen times before Windows Live, Facebook IMs connect.

Your right it connects in wifi but since wifi on my omnia is **** it doesnt work 99% of the time

NeoCracer says:

I have the same problem. Facebook Chat/msn won't sign in unless I'm connected to WiFi. You can't sign in over 3G/EDGE. But once singed in via WiFi, it's possible to keep on chatting when you switch to 3G/EDGE with WiFi OFF. There's clearly some kind of bug...

I have tried all sorts of combos including that but as soon as the phone has a cellular data connection IM disconnects and wont reconnect. I'm with Vodafone UK, which carrier are you on?

NeoCracer says:

I'm with a Belgian carrier Mobile Vikings, so I can't say anything about UK carriers...I hope they got it fixed in the RTM, but I can't find anything on that...

jonas.j says:

Same here with T-Mobile UK

mrhapps says:

I did everything but in the extra step, instead of deleting the account I just re-synchronized it.

alzaeem says:

if facebook chat still wouldn't connect after you connect facebook to your live account, you simply need to resync your facebook account on WP7 (go to settings -> email+accounts, then on facebook you can hold touch to show sync button). It worked immediately after that, no need to delete the account.

Dark_Halmut says:

I never use live or live messager. It exists now just for the phone to work. I dont see myself ever going to live.com again.

kaspik says:

It seems, facebook chat is not working with https only :(. I've temporary enabled access via http and it started to work (it asked me, when I wanted manage Windows LIVE Messenger application in facebook)

rsweis62 says:

all you have to do to activate facebook chat is go to your accounts and email setup and hold on facebook account until you see sync and click sync.
