AMC Theaters launches their official app for Windows Phone

AMC

AMC Theaters, who were just sold to Wang Jianlin, a Chinese multi-billionaire, has finally jumped on board with Windows Phone by releasing an official app. AMC has been around since the 1920's and it swallowed up many theater chains along the way including Loews Cineplex and Sony Theaters to become one of the largest distributors in the US.

And truth be told, it's a fairly nice app.

Well designed and fast loading with a gorgeous layout the app is well done. Focusing on movie posters for graphics with stripped down text for areas, the app gives you a wide assortment of features including:

  • My Profile where you can store your favorite theaters and movies
  • Get synopsis of the latest films including watching previews
  • Pin movies and your favorite local theater to your Start screen
  • Get offers (there were none when we tried)

You can buy tickets but it just launches IE9 and pushes you to Fandango which is a little rough for our likes. We would have preferred to buy our tickets directly. Heck, you can't even manage, use or interact with AMC Stubs, their rewards program, which is a bit of a let down.

But for a version 1.0 it's not too shabby. Being free also helps so if you frequent AMC you'll want to certainly pick this up. Or just use the Fandango app.

Pick up AMC Theaters for Windows Phone here in the Marketplace. Thanks, Jose, for the tip!

This makes me happy ;)

Good. It annoyed me when before a movie they advertise this app and it wasn't available for WinPhone.

Looks like a good app, I hope it's available in Canada soon.

Not cool. Waste of effort and is what you would expect from an independent developer creating an app in their bedroom or in front of their TV.

ThePKReddy says:

Why is it that whenever an app is announced here, it never shows in the marketplace search directly without using the mobile nations link?? No fix for this Microsoft?

Just has to do with their servers and being populated/refreshed.

timwp12 says:

All you have to do is click on download app link from your wp central app or do a google search

Already noted in my post. Its an inconvenient f up on Microsoft

pressstart says:

It's called technical reality. Would you prefer if they hold back on releasing the app before unlocking it for everyone?

xmarklive says:

Lol ......just use fandango

It uses the Fandango mobile site for ticket purchases anyway...which still doesn't support AMC Stubs. So we still get charged the convenience fee. The Fandango WP7 app lacks it, too. Not sure why it's taking so long to fix it. I brought it to their attention a month ago.

I never use online buy tickets. I just use app to see what movies are open for amc. But you can do that from other movie theater apps.

jfreiman says:

Exactly! No Stubs support and when you want to get tickets it takes you to the Fandango webpage! Stupid waste of r&d/marketing funds. :-/

Awesome this is my movie theater I go to. Thanks to billionaire and knows windows phone is awesome

There's an AMC theater three miles from my house (and two more in the city) but this app can't find any theaters, anywhere. Derp. And no Stubs integration makes this a pass for the time being.
That being said, the fact the even made a WP app is a good sign.

MediaCastleX says:

Unfortunately what happens when you don't get it they wonder why they bothered and let it die instead of improving...show your interest ;)

jfreiman says:

This is more like a .25 release and not a 1.0. Skip it.

jfreiman says:

"AMC Theatres" is one one of the lamest apps developed so far. Don't waste your time on getting excited or installing it. :'(
download Flixter or Fandango instead.
This AMC app really only gets you to register on their mailing lists.

argenys says:

For those who have pointed out a lack of "Stubs" integration it can be seen in the screenshots of the app. Meaning it should be available with its first update.

So today AMC Theaters sent out an e-mail about a new promotion they're doing for their app with the Amazing Spider-Man movie. No mention of Windows Phone version, just iPhone and Android. And worst of all, the Windows Phone version doesn't seem to participate in the promotion.
Web version of the e-mail here: http://view.mail.amcentertainment.com/?j=fe61157472610c7d7717&m=fef51178716702&ls=fde910777064037d7c13777d&jb=ff911c76&r=0

Why is it that Flixster is the only app that lists movie times in a way that makes sense? The movies are alphabetical and all versions of a movie are listed together. AMC and Fandango lists each version of a movie separately and they are all over the place. IMDb is even worse because you can't tell which version is which. Prometheus is listed three times and you can't tell the difference between regular, 3D, IMAX 3D.
