Android spotted on the Imagio

Filed under:

Well, look at this little surprise.  Looks like PPCGeeks forum user drellisdee managed to get Android 2.01 to boot up on his Verizon Imagio (see full review) using the HaRET linux bootloader.

While porting Android to our WinMo phones is not that new, nor still far from perfect (most are plagued with hardware integration issues), progress is still creeping along.

We'll just let Drellisdee summarize:

I've gotten android 2.01 to boot on Imagio based on the topaz work on xda. After changing the the startup config's I've got the touchscreen responding properly but the hardware keys arent mapped right. The latest kernel noted in post 602 on xda didnt boot but the original pkg did. PS vol down is for vol and backup key as its mapped currently and the bottom right onscreen button on the press the android to start will let you change the lang to english.

Of course now comes the areas that "still need work," which are numerous:
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth
  • Hardware key mapping
  • CDMA radio
  • GPS

Baby steps, baby steps.  Hopefully within a few months we'll all be dual booting the latest Android doughnut-thingamajigger on our WinMo devices.  Why? The same reason WinMo users always innovate: because we can!

PS  Here's the TP2 bounty thread with their bootable version, still in early stages.

I'll be dualbooting because i'd rather be using Android, but Sprint doesn't allow Android on SERO plans so i have TP2. :D

Amen to that, brother! I cherish my $30/mo unlimited SERO plan, and am concerned about facing a roadblock beyond the Touch Pro2. Sprint will eventually strongarm me into a pricier plan, if I want the latest & greatest device. Having the ability to dual-boot would be a great way to get around that - for a while, anyway.

I personally would've mentioned the Topaz forum on XDA more then these considering he pulled their work just boot, whereas on XDA/Topaz nearly most if not all function are operating somewhat.

The XDA/Topaz Dev's are working everyday bring small but incremental update so Topaz should be running well before imagio.

Odd, I sent it a tip about this on the TP2 weeks ago. The TP2 is actually further along than this. Hardware keys are mapped and if you call your voicemail and leave it connected when running HaRET you can place calls with Android as well. That's CDMA, I think they have WiFi working on GSM, not sure though.

Maybe it's no news but Android 2.01 runs very well on the Diamond now... Just out of curiosity I gave it a try yesterday, thanks to avery nice step by step guide I set it all up in less than 10 minutes on my HTC Diamond...

Everything works surprisingly great, gprs, calls, messaging, wifi and etc... The only thing I noticed isn't working yet is the camera and bt...

I also downloaded a few nice apps and games from the Android market and was very impressed at the quality of the games and how well they ran on my Diamond!!! I can't understand why we don't have games of this caliber on the WM platform... But luckily we can just load up Android nowadays when we want to have some extra fun :)
