Apps

Earlier this week we saw the refresh of Bing apps for Windows Phone, including News, Weather, Finance and more. Those were rather large updates as they brought account syncing and sharing options, making the Bing apps infinitely more useful for everyday use.

Today, Bing News had an update, in fact, if you open up the app you may even get an alert telling you as much – a neat little feature.

Pandora is a popular music service available in the US, Australia and New Zealand. Since the official app for Windows Phone launched on the store last year, consumers have been able to enjoy an ad-free experience without having to upgrade to a premium subscription.

This commercial-free Pandora experience was down to Microsoft, but now Pandora has announced that advertising will be coming to the Windows Phone platform, unless you have Pandora One.

Nokia never fails to impress us with the little options and configurations the company adds with its system app updates. This latest release (version 2.2.0.1) for the Touch system app on Lumia Windows Phones enables a new setting for consumers to toggle, which affects the vibration feedback caused by hitting the capacitive buttons. You're now able to simply turn the vibration on and off.

Music streaming services like Spotify aren't available worldwide. While millions of consumers can tap into huge collections of music tracks for a monthly fee, there are some regions that aren't covered by the popular companies. This is where services like Anghami (www.anghami.com) come into play, which supports the Middle East and North African regions (MENA).

Today, we're looking at the official Windows Phone app, which has just launched on the store.

BoxTV (www.boxtv.com) is an online video service in India, which serves the latest Bollywood, Hollywood and regional movies, TV shows and premium video content in one place. Essentially, the service from Times Internet fills a critical void due to the absence of services like Hulu and Netflix in the region.

While the official apps for other platforms have been available for a while, the Windows Phone app makes its debut now. From our friends at Times Internet, we also hear that a Windows 8 app would be ‘coming soon in few weeks.'

OneDrive now available on Windows Phone

We’re expecting the official OneDrive rebranding of SkyDrive to take place any moment now. In fact it might take place sooner than a lot of us expect. Why? SkyDrive for Windows Phone has just been updated to reflect the branding changes to OneDrive.

A few weeks ago Facebook launched a new app called Paper. As of right now it’s only available for the iPhone right now, not iPad, Android or Windows Phone. Which is pretty disappointing considering many folks who have played it Paper prefer it to the official Facebook app on iOS. We probably won’t see Paper for Windows Phone anytime soon, but we do have a new app that offers a comparable experience for those wanting Paper. Booklet is a new app for Windows Phone that’s worth checking out. So let’s check it out.

Can’t get enough news? Then you’re going to want to check our PressReader for Windows Phone. It’s a popular application from iOS and Android that gives you a more traditional newspaper reading experience, but on your tablets, PC’s and smartphones. Just as you wouldn’t judge a book by its cover, don’t just an app by its screenshots. PressReader is awesome.

It’s exactly one week before Mobile World Congress kicks off in Barcelona. Windows Phone Central will of course be there to cover the event, though we’re not expecting any major Windows Phone news to happen.

Still, Nokia will be there with presumably their new Android device, and there will also be a Nokia developer day too. In addition, Microsoft is holding a ‘Media and Analyst Event’ for select attendees on Sunday, where we’ll be covering that as well.

If you’re going, you may want to pick up the updated official GSMA Mobile World Congress app. The app, which was first released last year for the 2013 event, has been bumped to 1.2.0.0. At least, that’s what it says in the Store. When you open the app though, it says we’re on version 1.0.1.0.

It looks like the Bing team is not yet done with Windows Phone, as at around 3 AM this morning, they pushed out their latest addition, Health & Fitness to Windows Phone 8 devices. The app of course is a mobile version of the popular Windows 8/RT version and so far, it looks great.

However, as with the recently released Bing Food & Drink, this app is in beta. Basically, that means it’s not yet finished, and some parts may not be working. In fact, Microsoft this time explicitly stated this in the app’s description, so you should be forewarned.  Having said that, it’s damn nice, especially if you’re looking to live a healthier lifestyle in 2014.

Calorie Manager is a simple, straightforward Windows Phone 8 app that helps you manage your calorie intake, set daily goals and check out all the nutritional facts about what you eat. The app also has Fitbit integration that will allow you to transfer your nutritional intake to your Fitbit account.

It’s not the perfect solution to connect Fitbit devices with our Windows Phones but until an official Fitbit app hits the Windows Phone Store shelves, Calorie Manager isn’t a bad option for logging food activity. Even if you do not have a Fitbit device, Calorie Manager makes for a rather nice standalone calorie tracker.

Two popular Windows Phone photography apps are in the process of being updated. Fhotoroom is a Windows Phone app that combines a photo editor, photo-sharing network and camera app under one roof. Fhotolens, from the same developer, is a camera app for Windows Phone 8 that is fitted with a virtual 10-24mm lens to offer a fish-eyed perspective on things.

The developer, Thomas Lock, is constantly working to improve these two apps and has released updates for both the Windows Phone 8 and 7.x versions of Fhotoroom. The version 1.8 update for Fhotolens had to be pulled to address a few bugs and should be rolling out in a few days (submitted for certification this past Friday).

There are a variety of ways to customize your Windows Phone handset and make it your own. One of our favorite ways is to select and personalize the Lock screen.
