Microsoft had recently undergone quite a bit of criticism recently for the inflated number of apps in the Windows Store, a few of which were confusing and misleading. Well, it seems that Microsoft has heard the moans of consumers and developers alike and the Windows-maker is addressing those complaints with a number of different policy changes that will make it easier for users to find the app that they're looking for.
The HTC One M8 for Windows, currently only on Verizon, is expected to get a wider release in the coming weeks and months, including on AT&T in the US. As a result, a few of you are at least contemplating jumping from your Lumia to this new flagship Windows Phone, which looks to be the only one for the next few months. The hardware is certainly compelling and – spoiler alert – so far I am categorically enjoying using it as my daily driver.
However, you may be wondering what you lose by switching over in terms of those Nokia apps. I'll break it down for you.
AT&T-owned Cricket Wireless is now luring away T-Mobile and MetroPCS customers by offering an account credit promotion if you switch from those rivals. T-Mobile and MetroPCS customers who switch to Cricket Wireless will get a $100 account credit when they port over for each line with a maximum limit of five lines.
You probably have not heard of Neonize, because it's a new game that has just released simultaneously on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. The good news is that Windows Phone users do not have wait after its release on other platforms. It's pretty good, too. Neonize is a mobile arcade shooter game, which the goal is to survive an onslaught of enemy ships trying to ram into you.
We've installed it on our Nokia Lumia 930. Go watch our gameplay video.
Microsoft has just announced that 25 new markets around the world will now offer the Surface Pro 3. New Zealand is kicking things off, and we'll see additional locations offer the Surface Pro 3 over the next 24 hours. This announcement brings the total number of markets with Surface Pro 3 availability to 28.
There are basically two German developers we can count on to make great Windows Phone games: Flare Games (makers of Royal Revolt 2) and Handy Games. The latter entered the scene with Epic Battle Dude and Aces of the Luftwaffe, two fine free to play games.
This year, Handy Games finally has more Windows Phone games in store for us. A short while ago they released 1941: Frozen Front, a serious turn-based strategy game. We interviewed them about it at Casual Connect a while back. Today Handy follows up with SPS: Football, a very pretty and fun 2D soccer/football game. Both games are free, 512 MB RAM-compatible, and a whole lot of fun. Don't miss our impressions and hands-on videos!
Wunderlist has just updated their beta app for Windows Phone. Earlier this month, cloud-based task management platform Wunderlist came back to the Windows Phone platform with a new beta that introduced version 3 of the app. Now we're looking at a new update that adds some much needed Live tile functionality.
A few weeks back, we dived deeper into using Windows or Windows Phone for various connected hardware, including the Parrot AR.Drone 2.0, Sphero 2.0 and Insteon home-automation kits. The articles not only explained what those things are, but how well the work within the growing Microsoft ecosystem.
As part of the Hidden Gems campaign, we were giving away multiple devices per article, with the only rule being to write a comment (and preferably more than just a word). Over the last two weeks, we picked the winners, notified them, and most are already in possession of their new today.
Asphalt 8's latest update hit the Windows Store today, packing new courses set in Dubai, five new cars, and a whole new season with 74 events. Other updates since launch have added courses in China, added new multiplayer events, and tons of new cars. If you haven't given Asphalt 8 a shot since it came out, it's worth giving another go.
Over the last few days, Microsoft and its carrier partners have been busy pushing out the Lumia Cyan update for various Lumias. Today, we are updating our lists for the Lumia 525, Lumia 720, Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 as those phones have either completed their Cyan updates or have a few remaining carriers as holdouts.
Perhaps the biggest news is that all of India is now complete for the Lumia Cyan update. From the Lumia 520 all the way up to the Lumia 1520, all eleven of the country variant Lumias are now eligible for the 8.1 and new firmware updates. Considering how big a market India is for Windows Phone, this news demonstrates Microsoft's priorities in delivering updates to its users.
When it comes to the Lumia 720, 820 and 920 series, almost all regions and carrier updates are finished, with just a handful of carriers remaining (Tigo in Latin America seems unusually slow in approving).
Update Microsoft has issued the official announcement on the stand alone Kinect sensor for the Xbox One going on sale for $149.99, but with a slight date change to October 7. The company also says it will come with a code to download a free game, the upcoming Dance Central Spotlight from developer Harmonix.
Original story Ever since Microsoft decoupled the Kinect sensor from the Xbox One, the one lingering question was when would they sell it as a stand-alone unit? Offering an Xbox One without the Kinect sensor made financial sense in Microsoft's struggle against Sony, but it does not mean that people may never want to want to buy the Kinect at a later point. Until now though, there was no option to do so.
You have probably heard of Uber by now. It's a transportation network company that connects passengers with drivers of vehicles for hire in over 70 cities. We were very excited when the official app returned to Windows Phone and we have been using it frequently. Windows Phone users also get treated to a very cool integration with Cortana. You can ask her to grab you an Uber car!
