Lumia 610 Indonesia Certification

We've touched on the Lumia 610 (or 601 as it was referred to) previously, which is set to be announced at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2012 and will be powered by Windows Phone "Tango". LiveSide has received confirmation that the Nokia handset has passed through certification in Indonesia (as shown above).

Although not much detail is displayed, we do know that this device does indeed exist, which will make MWC fairly exciting with the unveiling of Microsoft's next Windows Phone update "Tango". As well as featuring the usual Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, the Lumia 610 will support GSM 900/1800 and WCDMA 2100 bands.

WPCentral Reinstaller Contest

booya

When working on the Reinstaller review I was a little surprised how many app's I've purchased since Windows Phone hit the market back in 2010. For those not familiar, Reinstaller compiles a list of all the app's associated with your Windows Live ID and then helps walk you through the installation process.

I knew I had a healthy number of apps but still I couldn't help but say "good grief" when the final tally hit 678. Other numbers shake out with Rich Edmonds having 199 apps and Dan Rubino tops the charts with 1,078! Granted we go through apps at a faster pace due to the nature of our work but we started to think how many apps you guys and gals have. One thought led to another and a giveaway was born.

We'll give whomever has the largest list of apps a $50 gift certificate to the WPCentral Accessory Store. Just download Reinstaller, go through the steps to create your app list, take a screen shot or photograph of your Windows Phone showing the number of apps and post it in this WPCentral Forums discussion.

Let's keep it honest so don't go out this afternoon and download a few thousand free apps to your phone. We'll cut things off this Sunday, February 19, 2012 and put up a braggin' rights post on the 20th.

I'll be really curious if anyone tops Dan's number.

It's Social Media Week (13-17 February) and Nokia, the global headline sponsor, has a few magic tricks to show off using Lumia Windows Phones. They hid two magicians, Matt & Prakash, in a secret trophy case accessible only by using Foursquare at the opening event of the Social Media Week.

This fits in nicely with Nokia's promotion on this side of the water, using London black cabs. Check out two more clips after the break, note that the third magic trick doesn't exactly use a Windows Phone as a prop.

T-Mobile HTC Radar getting the 8107 update

T-Mobile HTC Radar updated to 8107

If you own a T-Mobile HTC Radar 4G, check your phone for updates. We are getting reports that T-Mobile has begun distribution of the Windows Phone 8107 update today.

The 8107 update will improve the proximity sensor and Gmail contact sync as well as correct problems with visual voicemail, Microsoft security and the Arizona time zone.

You should receive a pop-up message alerting you of the update or you can connect to your Zune desktop client and check for the update under the phone's settings. The update will bump your software version to v7.10.8107.79. Let us know in the comments if you've gotten the update and any additional tweaks it may hold.

Dare we hope that AT&T's update will be next?

Tango has been in the spotlight for some time - the upcoming version of Windows Phone for emerging markets. We've already heard that Tango will lower the minimum RAM requirements to just 256MB, as well as a few tips detailing a few feature implementations. Now wp7forum.ru has leaked some screenshots of a Tango Windows Phone, and as well as some improvements being displayed, we can also see some drawbacks (see above shots).

wp7forum.ru reports that camera hardware will be dropped to just 3MP, while the lower RAM requirements may see users being greeted with potential Marketplace warnings due to not enough system resources being available. This could lead to some degree of fragmentation and will prevent users on low-end hardware being able to run certain apps, with the possibility of 3rd party Live Tiles not updating automatically.

WP Central

On the bright side, there were a few new features present. In the above shots we can see more functionality added to messaging, including the ability to record voice, attach videos as well as multiple photos to a single MMS. Microsoft will also be increasing the allowance for OEM/carrier installed applications from 16 to 40.

Chickens Can't Fly invades Windows 7

Chickens Can't Fly Windows 7 Theme

We mentioned it briefly but the new Windows Phone Xbox Live game Chickens Can't Fly now has its own Windows 7 theme. It joins other gaming title themes such as Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds and the Xbox Kinect game Gunstringer.

The Chickens Can't Fly theme includes wallpapers, sounds, and colors (no screen saver). The graphics look great and the sounds unique. But I have to admit it takes some time to get used to the chicken cluck as your alert sound.

You can find the Chickens Can't Fly Windows 7 theme pack here at the Windows download page.

Tango.me PC application

Tango, the cross-platform video calling application, appears to following in the footsteps of iPhone's Path application when it comes to the poor management of private account data. (Not to be confused with the Windows Phone update, codenamed Tango.) Today, a reader wrote in detailing how the PC client (version 1.6.14117 at time of writing) allows one armed with simply a mobile number access to any Tango user's contact data -- and account -- by simply using the application in a specific manner. While we won't share exact details, we must admit it's not hard to figure out. And just a few months ago, Tango was discovered to be downloading contact details without permission.

Using the steps provided, we were able to download a colleague's Tango contact data, make Tango calls, and manage account details with ease. This possibly indicates that Tango's security code-based account validation is simply an arbitrary client-side check -- a big no-no.

Update: Tango let us know the issue has been fixed and an update has been pushed out to users. Kudos to the Tango team for the quick response.

Marketplacebrowser.com closes its doors

Marketplacebrowser.com closes doors

Prior to Microsoft launching it's Marketplace web browser, most of us relied on third party websites to browse through all the Windows Phone apps. One of the first (if not the first) such site was Marketplacebrowser.com. It was a great resource and we have just learned that the site was shut down as of February 6, 2012.

Paul Willen, the sites creator, has posted a brief message on the site explaining that since Microsoft has launched their own Marketplace website, the task for Marketplacebrowser.com has been fullfilled.  All is not lost though.  Willen will now focus his efforts to a new website focused on the Windows Phone Community, WP7.nl.

We'd like to wish Paul the best in continuing his efforts to support and promote Windows Phones in the Netherlands and on the web.

Thanks, hd7guy, for the tip!

Job posting confirms Mango app compatibility in Apollo

WP Central

There has been speculation previously that Mango apps wont be able to run on Apollo-powered Windows Phones, especially from rumour preacher Eldar Murtazin which were subsequently squashed by Brandon Watson. We've been fairly sure (and hoping) that apps would run on the next version of Windows Phone, and now WPSauce has come across a job posting at Redmond that confirms compatibility.

The job description for the position of contains the following:

"Automated testing of marketplace applications written for Mango, but running on Apollo. Write code, file bugs."

While this is further confirmation, we'll have to see what resources Microsoft provide to the developers in the coming months. With the Apollo update (Windows Phone 8) looking set to be a massive overhaul, it'll be interesting to see how the software giant plays this out. Perhaps we'll learn more at MWC.

Gravity Guy flips out as the Xbox Live Deal of the Week

Gravity Guy

Windows Phone gamers may be busy with this week’s new Xbox Live release, Chickens Can’t Fly. But as I’ve told my friends, loved ones, and the people at the mental asylum, you can never have too many games. That’s why we should all give the Xbox Live Deal of the Week, Gravity Guy, a good looking over too. It’s on sale for $1.99.

Gravity Guy is a slick, fast-paced platformer in which the hero flips between floors and ceilings rather than jumping. See our review for more details. It packs a lot of content ever since the last update doubled the game’s length and added PDLC. The added bits feel like they were designed just to make you spend money on DLC though – they’re more frustrating than fun. Still, some people like a challenge!

Gravity Guy is on sale for $1.99 for one week only. Get it here on the Marketplace.

Nokia announcing Lumia 601 and Euro 900 at MWC?

Rumor has it that Nokia will be unveiling six phones at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, among them, two Windows phones.  PocketNow is reporting that Nokia's lineup will include a European version of the Lumia 900, as well as a new model, the Lumia 610.  The 610 may or may not be the elusive Lumia 601 that popped up in a promo video back in November, the only details of which were that it had a 8mp f2.8 camera on the back.  Whether the 610 and 601 are the same or not, the 610 is expected to be a budget model for economy or even pay-as-you-go plans.

As is the case with any upcoming event, we will likely see a swarm of reports in the weeks leading up to MWC 2012.  While it's always fun to speculate and discuss, it's also important to treat them as exactly what they are, rumors.

More 'crap apps' being let loose in the Marketplace

We previously assumed the Windows Phone Marketplace submission review team had a ritual to get unbelievably intoxicated every Friday night, return back to the offices and let through whatever humorous apps they saw, regardless of functionality. We've now had to revise our assumption, as it would appear that the team is simply having some giggles behind the scene throughout the week.

Introducing the app-that-shalln't-be-named (see above photo), no it's not an app dedicated to Lord Voldemort. This is possibly the most interesting submission due to the obscene graphic as the logo (we've actually censored it to keep WPCentral safe for work), which makes us wonder how on earth something this explicit can worm its way through, especially since Microsoft believes Xbox LIVE Avatar toy guns (that don't actually fire rounds or laz0rz) are offensive to the youngsters.

It's perfectly fine to decapitate heads on Skyrim, shoot aliens in Halo, check out some naked women on the Windows Phone Marketplace, but a toy gun on your Avatar is deemed 'unacceptable'.

"Hours of fun await your fingers"

Unfortunately, should you be looking forward to checking this app out via this article, you'll be slightly disappointed. While hours of fun for our fingers is certainly intriguing to say the least, the reviews of this 'crap app' provide an insight into the app's usefulness:

Podcast

Today we'll be back for another WPCentral Live Podcast streaming in HD right here on the site. That'll be at 2pm PST/5pm EST (10pm GMT) where you can join us for a live chat and discussion of all the week's news so far. This week's lineup:

  • Daniel Rubino - Editor in chief
  • Jay Bennett - Windows Phone developer
  • Rafael Rivera - WPCentral contributing writer, Withinwindows.com

And what we hope is the beginning of a semi-regular feature, we'll have a special guest on board this week which will be Microsoft's Jeff Wilcox.

A lot of you will know him from his work on the Foursquare app 4th & Mayor as well as his contributions to the Windows Phone SDK where he's designed a lot of the tools that developers use for app coding. He recently announced that he was moving to the Azure team at Microsoft and we'll have him on to discuss that as well as other Windows Phone bits.

So tune to the site at 5pm for our live chat room and listen in!

White 900

The thing about pre-orders is so long as the site doesn't charge you until the item ships, companies can say whatever they want. Why we mention all of this of course is Negri Electronics are offering to take your $649.50 for an unlocked Nokia Lumia 900 in white. A device that hasn't even been announced officially yet (though we think the it probably exists). We checked out the site via Reseller Ratings and they have a respectable 7.5 out of 10--so they're not a complete scam if that makes you feel any better.

White 900

As mentioned above, they won't charge your card until it ships but either they have some early info or they're aiming for some site hits for publicity. We're about 50/50 split on that one, so we're not exactly ready to endorse this as legit, but hey it's your money.

New YouTube Live app for Windows Phone gets the job done

YouTube Live

We'll be honest, we had no idea there is a live YouTube section on their site (http://www.youtube.com/live) but indeed there is, so it only makes sense that some of you would want to watch it on your phones. The app YouTube Live by wsoftvn (devs of the excellent easyTube, easyWallpaper and easyHeartRate) has just been released and it is currently free and ad-free to all. Last we checked, free is a good deal and there's not guarantees that it will last. In other words, you may want to grab it now.

Although the selection of "live" shows on YouTube is a little niche (lots of gaming and Arab channels) when you find something you want to watch, YouTube Live works extremely well. We just streamed a news conference over T-Mobile's "4G" HSPA+ pipes (admittedly a much better network than AT&Ts for raw speed) and it went without a hiccup--in fact it looked great.  Here are some of the live channels:

Nokia has been busy in Spain setting up "The Amazing Everyday" Windows Phone campaign promotions in a number of train stations, including Madrid's Estación de Ópera. In the video above we can see the team setting up an "Amazing Campus" at the Barcelona University station, and below we can see a setup at Passeig de Gràcia, an important avenue in the city containing many popular pieces of architecture.

Integrating advertising into the locations targeted is an impressive feat Nokia has been illustrating throughout Europe, especially with the deadmau5 performance in London last year. The University will allow Nokia to possibly attract the young souls they previously stated they'd be hunting down to rejuvenate the mobile brand.

The Nokia Lumia line of Windows Phone definitely turns heads but did you know that Nokia is offering a matching Bluetooth headset? A headset that is sure to turn heads as well?  The Nokia Luna is a button sized Bluetooth headset that is paired with a base that doubles as a storage case and charger. And it's not only the looks that makes the Luna an impressive headset.

Nokia is rating the standby time of the Luna to be 60 days in the storage case (we're guessing the case holds a maintenance charge) with standby time out of the charger at 35 hours. The Luna is also NFC in that you can pair it by laying it flat against the back of a Lumia Windows Phone.

The Luna is available in five colors to match your Lumia handset and just looks cool. We've been told that the Luna is "coming soon" to the U.S. Market. No words on pricing but Euro versions are being imported for around $90 (when you can find them). Once we get our hands on the Luna, we'll get a more detailed review up. In the meantime, hit the break for another Luna video that also highlights the Lumia 800 color choices.

Facebook v2.3

We mentioned how this morning version 2.3 of the official Facebook app should be going live today and true to their word, it has.

The new version brings a complete redesign of the UI as can be seen above in some new screenshots. The panorama look makes the app more Metro friendly and more importantly, it adds much more functionality like the ability to see and add "likes" to posts. There's also a refined tool bar at the bottom with quick access to Check in, Add (post) or quickly add/take a new photo.

In addition, you now have access to pages, groups, feed filters, privacy information and banner images. Speed of the app seems on par with before and we're hoping for more reliable notifications (always a tricky issue that is more Facebook than Windows Phone).

So far it looks to be a solid and respectable update, something many of you have been wanting for months now--so are you satisfied? Hit us up in comments...

Pick up the official Facebook app version 2.3 here in the Marketplace (and watch our video tutorial on how to force the update).

The public will be given roses for free, along with a box that contains a card with a "2 for 1" meal offer.
