Bing News and Translator get small updates today for Windows Phone

Earlier this week we saw the refresh of Bing apps for Windows Phone, including News, Weather, Finance and more. Those were rather large updates as they brought account syncing and sharing options, making the Bing apps infinitely more useful for everyday use.

Today, Bing News had an update, in fact, if you open up the app you may even get an alert telling you as much – a neat little feature.

If you head to the Store, you’ll see that version of of News is now available. We’re not finding any new features, though it does feel zippier (insert joke) and seeing as it’s following on the heels of this week’s big update, we’re guessing ‘bug fixes’. Some users have reported crashing issues, so this may be a rapid fix for that. Regardless, make sure you’re up to date as it’s a swell app.

Bing Translator

Bing Translator was left out of the ‘refresh’ this week and we even forgot to mention it. That’s a shame as it too is a supremely well-crafted app, that is happens to also be very useful.

Translator is still not part of the ‘3.0’ series that other Bing apps are a part of, but today, version 2.9 has hit the Store and it has a generous changelog:

  • Camera translation for Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Polish and Turkish
  • Offline translation for Polish and Turkish
  • Online translation for Maltese and Welsh
  • Wide live tile

Not a bad if you use those language and we suppose a wide live tile was well overdue.

The translator doesn't work on voice for me anymore, hasn't for a few weeks , anyone know what the story is??

Works for me. Uninstall and install

rockstarzzz says:

Share feature is fixed for Bing news.

Laura Knotek says:

That's great to hear. Inability to share is what made me rarely use Bing News.

rockstarzzz says:

My friends always were displeased when I shared genuinely great piece of news via email, instead of social network share.

Laura Knotek says:

The main issue was inability to share via email if they didn't have Windows 8 when I used the Windows 8 app. None of my friends have Windows 8/8.1.

WillBrown says:

Yup. I actually get a link to the original news source now instead of the almost useless app link.

Laura Knotek says:

Yes, this makes Bing News one of the most useful things now.

The translator app is great but they really need to add support for more Asian languages.

SwimSwim says:

And Latin... I hate being forced to turn to Google Translate when I need a Latin dictionary (for class) because Bing doesn't support it.

It feels so treacherous, but I don't have a choice because Bing Translate doesn't support as many languages. In addition to the feeling of betray, there's also just simply that Bing Translate is much more well designed in my opinion.

Bing's got the better UI and features: now if only they would add more languages and a "Detect Language" feature.

+1020 920 & 520 we need this in our house

bjax says:

Does Bing translate South Korean language?

koenshaku says:

It does, but I will probably revisit bing translate in a year or so. I have been using T Translate instead which I would say does a better job than both google and microsoft and the app for windows phone is coded very well.

drozdpatrick says:

Ah you and you t apps, what's up with that?

danielgray says:

Yes, would like Thai offline. Also, would like it to detect text that is in a foreign language in an app and offer to translate it.

kurtd says:

Still no love for the land of smiles.

Topics doesn't crash anymore on Bing News. Syncing between my 822 and 928 works now. :)

sdreamer says:

Argh need camera for Japanese :D

levin808 says:

no kidding, the icon tile even uses hiragana!

I'm hoping Thai is coming as camera translation soon. That would rock my boat.

edsal says:

They need to have voice for Portuguese to English as well.

I feel like slapping the next person who says "seems faster". The joke is now annoying

I downloaded Translator last night when someone randomly texted me in Asian characters. Guessed correctly that it was Chinese and ended up having a short conversation. They had the wrong number.

Sheraz Ahmad says:

I feel like slapping the next person who says "seems faster". The joke is now annoying (except Daniel lol)

Rich Edmonds says:

Is it me or do comment loading times seems faster? :-P

I beg of you translator add Swahili, one of the more well know languages from Africa!!!

Jazmac says:

The only time I know about an update on my 920 is when I read about it here.  Since the Black update, I simply do not get notified anymore.

Kadcidxa says:

Also on Windows 8 it got updated.

Adretheon says:

I wouldn't be surprised if we see the translator app disappear after 8.1. I'm slightly suprised that its still around. It should have been integrated into the Bing buttons by now, I'm sure cortana will render some of the translator parts unneeded, like voice translations.

karthik637 says:

Please reprogram translator again. It is getting crashed.

ortizang says:

Google translate is way better!!

rockstarzzz says:

Nothing Google made is better.

ortizang says:

I'm afraid you haven't compared both apps.

Edwardlb20 says:

I am afraid he has and you haven't...

ortizang says:

Well, I'm teach languages in university and I use all kinds of dictionaries and translators. The accuracy and user friendly of google translate is way better than Bing. Bing is fine but it still has to catch up.

Dazzi says:

Does anybody know if bing news lets you share with Facebook groups?

MorganRW says:

Besides taking up more space, why is the wide tile for Translator considered a good move?

drozdpatrick says:

Until the new update I won't be downloading these bing (why does sp chk insist bing must be capitalized) apps, due to memory drain, but plan on it. Good apps, 521.

adeski says:

Can no longer share articles by text with this 'new' version
