Windows Phone Store Collections: Kitchen Helpers

Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Kitchen Helpers Collection

Our Windows Phones have a lot of potential. From the elementary task of placing a phone call to sending emails to surfing the web to controlling home security systems, our Windows Phones can help tremendously with our day-to-day lives.

One aspect of daily life will land most of us in the kitchen (you can only survive on take out for so long) and the Windows Phone Store has put together a small collection of apps designed to help you explore the world of cooking. The Kitchen Helpers Collection is one many Collections the Store has put together to help Windows Phone users get started in the right direction. Topics range from gaming to sports to utilities.

We've recently touched on the For the Kids Collection and for this week's roundup, we'll pluck a few apps from the Kitchen Helpers Collection to highlight.

If you are in the market for a calculator app to cover just about every calculation need imaginable, check out the Windows Phone app Calculator Toolbox.

The app was recently updated to version 2.2 and adds a handful of new calculators to the toolbox, OneDrive integration and more.

Please note this update only applies to the paid version of Calculator Toolbox. The free, ad-supported version will eventually see the update but will lack premium features such as OneDrive integration and Excel report generation.

Earlier this week, FitBit brought their official app to Windows Phone (see our review), including Bluetooth synchronizing for those on Lumia Cyan or non-Lumia devices with Bluetooth 4.0 LE enabled.

Now, version 1.1 is live in the Store and with it a few fixes, some cleaning up of the design and a new transparent tile option (that is right, the choice is yours).

Yes, Facebook was down, you're not alone

Update: It appears that access to Facebook is back up for both the web and the Windows Phone apps. You are now free to carry on with your day.

It appears that Facebook's newest feature is "being offline". Attempts to visit the social network right now are being thwarted by a lack of stuff to load, from a "Sorry, there was an error" or "We're having trouble getting data" alerts with no new content in Windows Phone app to an apology of "Sorry, something went wrong" in browsers. Let us know, is Facebook down for you too?

The PayPal app for Windows Phone has not been on our radar since a year ago in 2013, but today a major 4.0 update is going out and with it comes a new UI. Rather, this new UI is the same as found on Android and iOS, making the Windows Phone on parity with those platforms.

In terms of features, you still get the usual fare, including managing your account, push notifications, send or request money and the increasingly more relevant Local feature, which lets you visit local shops that take PayPal as a form of payment.

With Nokia Camera, you can change a lot of camera settings like white balance, focus, ISO, shutter speed, and brightness to take the perfect photo, but all of that don't matter if you don't pay attention to framing or composition. Fortunately, Nokia Camera provides framing grids that you can activate within the settings. We'll teach you how to turn them on and how you can use them to improve your photos.

The Windows Phone Store has a nice selection of navigational apps that can help you get around town or get across the country. NAVIGON and HERE Drive+ are two of the more popular options available on Store shelves. Along with a full host of features, these two mapping apps take advantage of downloadable maps to help minimize your dependency on data while traveling.

I recently took a short jump out of town and decided to re-visit both these apps to see if one stood heads and shoulders above the other. I used both apps periodically on the round trip journey, as well as around town while at my destination. While we've looked at these two navigation apps before, having logged 1,300 miles on my trip I figured it was worth taking another look at things.

This morning, popular list-making app Wunderlist released their long awaited version 3, with over 60 improvements onboard. The top-rated app has a large presence on Apple's iOS and Google's Android, and there is even a version for Amazon's Kindle. Wunderlist did have an app for Windows Phone, but like some other apps (cough, IMDB, cough) it has withered and died.

Now, the company has made it official that Wunderlist 3 is heading to the Windows ecosystem, and it looks to be a universal app.

While usually I report on some terrific apps on the Windows Phone Store (and some not-so-good ones too) here on Windows Phone Central, this post is different. Today I share my first Windows Phone app with the readers - the community that's more aware and usually critical, in a useful way.

On a daily basis, we look up details of a national highway in India, a region associated with a license plate number, or MICR code of your bank branch. A couple of months ago, I set out to build a one-stop app where one could find all these 'codes of India', and hence the name, INcode.

Zomato is a popular restaurant finder Windows Phone app that gives you recommendations for restaurants in your area and lets you look at menus, pictures, contact info, and directions. Available in over forty cities across the United Kingdom, India, Brazil, the UAE, New Zealand, South Africa, Indonesia, Turkey, Portugal, the Philippines, Qatar, and Sri Lanka, the Windows Phone app was recently updated to version 5 with a complete design and user experience refresh.

After the major refresh, the app continues to get quick updates, and has just received the fourth update in three months. The app has now been updated to version 5.4.0.0, and brings in some new features. The app's also lighter, and definitely faster (So, yeah, I've pre-empted a lot of comments!) across the board.
