Apps

Much like Wunderlist, which as a universal app is built on the same code for Phone and Windows 8.1, highly praised Atmosphere Weather is now available for your tablet or PC. Leveraging the unique opportunity for developers who can target both platforms, Atmosphere Weather brings the same elegant form and functionality to the larger screen.

The app is brand new to the Store, just launching this morning. Assuming you bought the 99 cent version for Windows Phone, there is no new purchase for the Windows 8.1 one as the 'pay once, get everywhere' model applies to this release.

Although WhatsApp and BBM rule the roost for messenger apps these days, Telegram comes in right behind them in terms of features and even security due to the onboard encryption. The group behind Telegram held a contest to see who could make the best Telegram app for Windows Phone, and back in May Ngram won the honors.

Today, version 0.1.3.4 is live in the Store, and this is more than just standard performance improvements, as new features and some refined ones are included.

Converge is a popular newsreader that used to go by the name of the Verge app. We will skip wading into the circumstances that lead to the name change, but even as 'Converge,' the developer behind the app, Anand Prakash, faced some obstacles in keeping his creation on the Store. Now, Converge is back with version 4.0 and with it a new mission as a general tech newsreader, but with the familiar – and beautiful – UI and smooth transitions.

Converge 4.0 still features articles from the Verge, but additionally it now also supports feeds from WinBeta and Windows Phone Central (with our blessing and consent). The decision as to which newsfeeds to use is left to the user during the initial setup.

Swarm, a new check-in service from Foursquare, is coming out today for Windows Phone. Teased a few weeks ago on the Foursquare blog, the app lets you see where you friends are and then to check into those places. Swarm is not exactly replacing Foursquare, which is focusing on 'discovery' going forward, and it too should have a Windows Phone refresh in the near future according to the Foursquare Twitter account.

The big focus for Swarm over its predecessor is social, as features like traditional mayorships and the points system get dropped in exchange for seeing where your friends are for the evening. Now you can be mayor of a location, but only amongst your friends and not the rest of the world. Users will also still get Insights aka knowing how many times they have checked into a location. Finally, stickers. Yes, if you thought junior highschool was over, you would be wrong as Stickers play a significant role in Swarm.

We love when highly anticipated apps join the Windows Phone Store. That's why we were excited and looked forward to the award-winning mixer console app edjing coming to Windows Phone. It's been highly regarded on Android and iOS. It launched on Windows 8.1 earlier this year, and finally snuck into the Windows Phone Store a few weeks back.

Pizza Hut, the American restaurant chain and one of the flagship brands of Yum! Brands, Inc., known for pizzas and side dishes is a leading affordable casual dining restaurant chain in India. After making a foray into India in 1996, the chain has now 138 dining restaurants across 38 cities in India.

Pizza Hut India has launched their official app for Windows Phone 8 devices. Unfortunately, the app is just a wrapper for Pizza Hut's mobile site, and I usually hate to report apps like that. However, the app's pretty useful and works well for what it's intended for and so, I thought of looking beyond the tacky design and lazy execution.

Earlier this summer, we travelled to QuakeCon in order to catch a first look at Bethesda's new Doom game that is coming to Xbox One and PC sometime in the future. Xbox 360 owners can already play the first three Doom games thanks to the awesome Doom 3 BFG Edition, but mobile gamers aren't so lucky. iOS has Doom Resurrection and the Doom RPGs, but neither Windows Phone nor Android has an official Doom game to their names. Windows Phone does have an unlicensed port called Doom GLES though.

Speaking of unlicensed Doom, we also have an app called Doom Shooter from M4Multimedia that will put a smile on Doom fans' faces. Doom Shooter is a free camera app/lens for both Windows Phone 7 and 8 (including 512 MB devices) that lets you pretend to shoot everything on your camera feed with the trusty Doom pistol. You can even add blood splashes to your photos for maximum authenticity. Doom Shooter has some obvious room for improvement, but the simple joy of seeing Doom graphics overlaid on your selfies can't be denied.
