Apps

Great news if you’re a AT&T U-Verse, Mediacom or Verizon FiOS customer, as you can now download and take full advantage of Fox’s new FOX NOW app for Windows Phone. Actually, anyone can download and use the app to watch free clips and even a selection of full episodes, but customers on the aforementioned cable networks get all episodes.

Locking the screen rotation on Windows Phone 8 is simply wonderful. Before Update 3 (aka GDR3), if you were preparing to lay in bed with the Kindle app at the ready, you'd have to watch out for the pesky gyroscope which would switch the screen orientation. It was a minor nuisance. Now with rotation lock, you're able to hop into the phone settings and lock the display to portrait or landscape. That said, it can be a pain to navigate through the settings area. Cue Rotation Lock, an app to solve this problem.

Last night, there was evidently no Facebook Beta update. We suppose the beta team is on vacation, taking a week off. Instead, we managed to pick up an update for the official app, bringing it to version 3.1.2.0/5.1.2.0 for Windows Phone 7.x and 8, respectively.

That’s all well and good though if you were looking for some new features or something vastly different, you may have to keep waiting. Although we have received exactly one million, five hundred and one thousand tips, not one of those detailed any noticeable changes. Sure there’s the usual “it feels faster” but at this point, that has become nothing but a running joke.

That doesn’t mean it can’t be improved, which is exactly what some third party apps do on the platform. We’ve got a handful of calendar apps that run circles in features compared to the default calendar app.

Compass Deluxe is a fairly new app the platform that adds some functionality to your Windows Phone that otherwise isn’t built in. Let’s check it out.

When it comes to tracking our fitness, we’re big fans of the Fitbit family of trackers and the overall ecosystem. Unfortunately, they don’t have an official app on Windows Phone, but do have on for Windows 8 and have a desktop app to sync with you tracker.

However, Windows Phone does have a nice set of third-party apps that at least let you view your data. One of our favorites, Fitbit Tracker, just received an update. Let’s check it out.

On the heels of Microsoft updating Bing Weather for Windows Phone 8, Bing Sports is getting into the action with an update as well.

Bing Sports moved to version 2.0.2.177 and while there's not an official change log posted, it appears the update adds a few new sports categories. You've got your customary professional sports listed (NFL, NBA, NFL, etc) along with collegiate sports, the PGA, and MLS but now NASCAR is showing up on the list.

Microsoft has updated their Bing Weather app to deliver user-demanded features

Besides Windows 8.1 rolling out today and Microsoft refreshing their core apps on that OS, Microsoft is also pushing out updates for some of their super popular Bing apps, including Weather, for Windows Phone. (Sports got a small update as well, which we’ll cover later, but it’s minor compared to Bing Weather).

Bing Weather has been bumped to version 2.0.2.170 and according to the site Plaffo, it includes quite a few new additions that should make the app a lot better.

Are you ready for what's in store?

Nokia has been busy pushing out small and subtle updates for their core Lumia apps on Windows Phone. While these have not brought any new features, they all tend to say “support for more devices” under their changelogs.

Next week, Nokia is expected to announce a few new Lumias at their Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. Coincidence? Not at all. Some of those devices should feature a 1080P display, and while current apps will technically run fine at that resolution, developers are encouraged to rethink some scaling and graphics for their apps to make them look the best.

Weather Radar Tile is an interesting Windows Phone 8 weather app that not only allows you to access weather forecasts and radar, but also pin a radar tile to your Windows Phone Start Screen.  The radar Live Tiles are not animated but do update periodically to give you a snap shot of what's headed your way. Weather forecasts and radar are provided through the National Weather Service and locations are U.S. only.

Weather Radar Tile isn't a bad Windows Phone 8 app but navigation isn't the smoothest. The app is worth a try but may not appeal to everyone.

Time was that Microsoft notified us of every Red Stripe Deal (then called the Xbox Live Deal of the Week) in advance. Sadly they stopped doing so many moons ago, but that hasn’t stopped our inquisitive nature. Today I was sniffing around all Wolverine-like and caught wind of tomorrow’s deals through unofficial channels – a day ahead of schedule.

The Xbox Red Stripe Deal is Rocket Riot from Codeglue, on sale for $1.99. Brain Seal’s indie RPG Dark Quest and the popular Tweet It! App from My Amazing Big Fork are both 99 cents. Head past the break for screenshots and Store links!

My Editor's Choice for third-party Twitter apps gets another fantastic update

We all have our favorite Twitter apps on Windows Phone. Mine is Tweet It!

Sure, the official Twitter app is a looker but if you need something with a little more power, you turn to third-party apps to deliver. Tweet It! is that app for me because not only does it look great, but it has some unique and clever features that no other Twitter app can boast. In fact, I’m always calling it ‘clever’ and version 7.0.2.0 is no different.

So what’s so cool about Tweet It! that has me using all of these descriptors? Head past the break to see what’s new.

Hipstamatic has been relentless in their support for Windows Phone. Their Oggl and Oggl Pro apps for Windows Phone launched earlier this summer alongside the Nokia Lumia 1020. When they initially came out, performance and features were lacking a bit. Constant updates have improved the apps to more than adequate. Let’s check out what’s new in the latest update for Oggl and Oggl Pro.
