By now it seems to be an open secret that Windows Phone 8 will be getting HD 1080P support in GDR3, a small OS update due in November.

That version of the OS is expected to debut on the Nokia Lumia 1520, a device reportedly being announced on October 22nd in Abu Dhabi and later released in the US in early November. Likewise, Verizon Wireless is supposed to get a similar 1080P Windows Phone 8 device dubbed the Lumia 929.

Back in August, we regretfully announced that popular emulator developer M.k would be retiring from Windows Phone development and allowing his apps to disappear from the Store. M.k’s apps are still around for the time being, but the emulation torch has essentially been passed on. And who came forward to pick it up and create new emulators? Andre Botelho, that’s who.

Andre has two emulators on the Store (EmiGens Plus and EmiNES) and a third (EmiPSX) in development. EmiGens Plus is the first Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive emulator for Windows Phone. It also happens to run Sega Master System and Game Gear games, making it a great value for classic gaming fans.

Check out our hands on video, impressions, and game recommendations after the break!

The popular Windows Phone app WeChat has been updated to version 4.5.2. So what's been added since we last looked at the app back in July? Quite a fair bit actually. You can chat with friends in a walkie talkie session, search through chat history and more. There's no groundbreaking functionality that will blow your mind away, but there's enough included to keep the experience feeling fresh and updated.

Umbrella 8 is a unique and eye-catching Windows Phone 8 weather app that has a lot going for it. The app throws a lot of weather information your way and includes Flickr integration to spice up the background images.

However, while the design is appealing you have a reoccurring error and the navigation isn't as smooth as it could be. Still Umbrella 8 is an attractive weather app worth trying and has a ton of potential.

Some of the out-of-the-box apps on Windows Phone don’t see updates too frequently. Sure, you’ve got Xbox Music picking up some improvements with GDR2. But other than that, most apps don’t see refreshes or updates until the next version of Windows Phone hits. Which is why there are popular calendar apps in the Windows Phone Store. One of our recent favorites, Super Calendar, just picked up an update. Let’s check it out.

Skype not planning to release further updates for Windows Phone 7.x

The Skype team today has taken to their blog to further outline some of their plans for mobile going forward.  In the article, they highlight how Windows Phone 8 was the first OS to receive mobile HD video calling and feature the new Modern UI. They also mentioned that “the vast majority of our Windows Phone base and usage is on Windows Phone 8”.

Skype, like all companies, has to put their resources where the market is and because of that, they’re announcing that there will be no further development for Windows Phone 7.x legacy devices.
