Weekly photo contest: Sunrise

Let's get out and shoot more. I thought it would be fun if we had a weekly photo contest here on the site. How about every Wednesday we'll pick a theme, and you have until next Tuesday to go out and use your Windows Phone to capture the image. Our first theme? Let's do sunrise.

Over the weekend, Windows Phone Central announced a contest in which readers could win copies of Snuggle Truck and Jack Lumber from Owlchemy labs. To enter, all you had to do was pick a game and give us a Monty Python quote. Monty Python is the British comedy troupe responsible for the Monty Python's Flying Circus television series and three classic films (more or less).

Every now and then a new game developer joins the Windows Phone ecosystem and you just wonder how we ever lived without them. One such company is Owlchemy Labs, a small studio who recently published two stellar games: Snuggle Truck, a 2D driving/stunt game, and Jack Lumber, the best lumberjack game on the market.

Last week, our Jack Lumber review reminded some readers of Monty Python's Flying Circus. So "Hey," we thought. "Why not arrange a little Monty Python-themed contest and give away some Owlchemy prizes?" That's what we're doing this weekend. You guys can enter to win the Steam versions of Jack Lumber ($7.49 value) and Snuggle Truck ($4.99 value). Play a bit on your PC , Windows 8 device, or Mac and get an idea of what the Windows Phone games are like. And it's really easy to enter!

A few weeks ago we started our Hidden Gems series in conjunction with Microsoft. The goal of the series is to highlight apps and games of high quality but that slip under the radar. Sure it is easy to write about big official apps, but it is these burgeoning services and games that are the heart of mobile today.

Currently, we are on a brief hiatus as we catchup on device release news, reviews and our usual content. However, two things: one, you can still enter our contests to win a new phone or tablet, and two, the series returns in the coming weeks!

Okay folks, as Friday is winding down we figured it were time to announce our Surface Pro 3 contest winner. If you recall, all you had to do was leave up to three comments on our original article. Those comments were enough to enter, even if you're world-wide.

We ended up having an astonishing amount of entries, which broke our backend CMS a few times (thanks for the free stress test!). Let's take a look.

Win a Surface Pro 3 from Windows Phone Central!!

Leave up to THREE comments on this article for THREE chances to win a Core i5 Surface Pro 3!

It was just over one week ago that Microsoft pulled the covers off of the Surface Pro 3, a device I use every day now (don’t worry, our full review is due soon, we like to spend time with it first). We know many of you want this super awesome, but admittedly pricey, high-tech gizmo, so we’re giving you three chances to WIN ONE.

To enter the contest, all you need to do is login to Windows Phone Central and leave a comment for your chance to win. And since this is the third Surface Pro, we're going to spice things up and give you up to THREE chances to win. After you leave your first comment, you can leave a second and a third to earn your additional chances (you can leave even more comments if you like, but only your first three will count for contest entry purposes). Please make comments UNIQUE from each other, otherwise you will trigger our spam filter!

Last Thursday, we asked for your help rename Weather+ for Windows Phone. The app, developed by Bailey Stein, had received a ‘Content infringement claim’ from an iOS developer who had an app of the same name. So what to do? Why not ask you folks, since you use it!

The rules were simple: suggest a new name in comments. We would then pick five from the more than 1000 entries, and hold a poll where you can vote for your favorite. Well, that time is upon us, so head past the break for the five winners or round one, and vote for your favorite!

Feb 7, 12:30PM ET: Comments are now closed! We'll be going through and picking our choices! Thanks to all who participated!

Weather apps. Everyone wants one, and everyone has their vision of the perfect one. Weather+ is the new kid in town that we’ve been covering, and it’s maintained a solid 4.5 stars out of 5 on the Store. That means many of you like its unique gesture based interface and bold UI.

Unfortunately, the weather app has run into naming troubles. This is an issue we’re seeing more and more these days as the mobile playing field starts to get crowded. The culprit? Weather+ is evidently a popular title on something called iOS (yeah, we haven’t heard of it either) and they’ve filed a successful ‘Content Infringement Claim’ against the developer Bailey Stein. The app has been temporarily hidden due to this dispute.

So, you know the drill. Based off of the app’s unique design and gesture-based UX, what would you call it?

Last May, the Windows Phone Central community came together and helped pick a new name for Instagram app Itsdagram. You know now that app as Instance, the first Windows Phone app with native uploading to Instagram available in the Store. Now we’re going to pull together as a community and help redesign the logo for Pouch, a Pocket client in the Windows Phone Store.
