Yes, in the first for an Xbox LIVE game, Parachute Panic also picked up a double-sided Live Tile with that latest Mango update. Now that we received the complete changelog from the company, we were able to verfify that indeed, it shows your highest score achieved on one side, the regular icon on the other.

Sure, it's not the biggest deal in the world, but between the ringtone that they gave us and this, FDG has kind of outdone themselves. In fact, we think all Xbox LIVE games should do this. Here's the rest of the changelog, most of which we already knew:

  • Live Tile support (shows the current highscore in the Tile)
  • Fast App Switching
  • 60fps
  • Exclusive Ringtone for our WP7 fans
  • Tons of bugs and minor issues fixed

Nokia World is akin to Microsoft's BUILD or MIX events--think developers, rallying the troops, showing off the next big thing from the company. This year, Nokia World is happening in London in October and clearly all eyes will be on Nokia to see what they have up their sleeves. With their stock not performing to well and the obvious lag between Symbian and new Windows Phones, everyone is expecting Nokia to show off their first Mango device next month at this event.

The guest speaker list for said show has just been revealed and sure enough, we get a who's who from Microsoft and the Windows Phone team who will be there, presumably to not only show us Nokia's new phone but what Nokia has done with the OS and services--which is really the big story, after all.

So who will be there? Joe Belfiore, who oversees Windows Phone Program Management, Albert Shum, Director of Mobile Experience Design at Microsoft and Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s Bing and MSN head for the first day keynotes. On day two, Brandon Watson, Senior Director of Windows Phone 7 development and Matthew Bencke, General Manager of Developer and Marketplace will be on hand for some talks. And finally Achim Berg, Microsoft’s Windows Phone Marketing chief will be part of a roundtable panel discussion with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop with Vodafone and Orange on day three.

Sounds like an exciting month as we're sure Nokia and Microsoft will unveil what they've been doing for the last eight months.

French carrier SFR ready to roll out Mango

Another carrier is jumping on the "I'M READY!" wagon, this time it's France-based SFR. The above screenshot shows a detailed page about Mango (basically how to update handsets via Zune), however the "continue" link is pointing at Microsoft's Windows Phone website.

We recently covered a leaked Orange FR memo that detailed the 15th (now gone) as the roll-out day for Mango and how they are even possibly exchanging broken devices with preloaded Mango ones. While we've had a limited release of the update, it seems as though some carriers are still playing catch up for now. Let's not forget that "this fall" begins soon.

Yesterday we reported on how Orange France was to release the update for Windows Phone 7.5 Mango beginning on September 15th. Obviously, that has not happened, but it might not be because Orange was unready but rather Microsoft has them holding off.

So it should be of no surprise that they have had their stock of Windows Phone re-flashed with Mango. Evidently, that's the case as Lionel L. can attest over at Smartphone France. Reportedly he had something wrong with his LG Optimus 7 and brought it in for an exchange/warranty repair. He ended up leaving with a brand new Optimus 7, but this time it was running "Mango". As evidence, he supplied the pic you see to the right, where the device is running 7720.68.

All we can say is we're close folks, very close.

The other day we reported on Parachute Panic, the fun little skill game, receiving a Mango bump. The game now supports fast app resume and that 60FPS increase, which really smooths out the game's hand-drawn and charming graphics.

One bonus feature that we missed was the unique ringtone that FDG Entertainment created for Windows Phone users. To refresh, one new feature of Mango is the ability for developers to make apps that pull down and allow you to save music as a ringtone--anyone can do this. FDG took their awesome and catchy barbershop-style music and made one right in the game.

We show it how it works and how it sounds (which is brilliant and hilarious). Our hats off to FDG for adding this little bonus.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Another weekend, another break for most. This week has been a Mango-focused beast with rumours and speculation coming from all directions. Dave Blake from the WPCentral forums brings across the top discussions that are being engaged with by readers. We have episode 125 of the WPCentral podcast and we were joined by Mike Newman, developer of Penguin, for this week's interview.

Head on past the break for the full summary.

We threw up a post not so long ago where fans of the Windows Phone platform could go through and vote for the team to win the IDEA: People's Choice Award. At the ceremony the WP team were celebrating with just not one award, but three. They acquired People's Choice, Best in Show and Interaction awards.

Thanking fans and voters alike over Twitter, the team have seen both investment and innovation of the Metro UI being paid off with implementation in Windows 8 and Xbox 360, as well as awareness by the industry for its simplicity.

Phone calls possible with Windows 8?

Long Zheng, over at IStartedSomething.com, has put together a nice case to show that Windows 8 slate devices will have the ability to make phone calls.  The first piece of evidence is front and center in the picture above, which comes from a slide show on Windows 8 live tiles at the last day of BUILD 2011 in Anaheim.  One of the sample tiles is clearly labeled "Missed Calls," complete with a phone icon and time-stamped Contact names.

If that weren't enough, a freeze frame of a Contact in the People Hub of a Windows 8 demo video (below) shows the option to call the person's mobile phone.  This denotes that any calling functionality is more than just VOIP-based.

Last, but certainly not least, we have some hardware evidence.  Those fortunate enough to attend BUILD received a slate loaded with Windows 8, along with some other goodies.  WithinWindows.com's Rafael Rivera broke down the specs of the device and found it contained an Option wireless chip, which not only controls the WiFi, GPS and 3G, but alos supports cellular telephony using quad-band 2G and peta-band 3G.

We know that Skype will be a big part of Microsoft's operating systems going forward, but the ability to make mobile phone calls as well is a pretty handy feature.  More interestingly, Zheng points out that this functionality could signal that the Windows 8 kernal may in fact be used as the foundation for future Windows Phone versions.

We reported back at the end of August that Microsoft had just pushed back the Mango update to September 15th. We really did not know what that meant at the time, but saw quite a few other clues to suggest that indeed on that day, something big was afoot.

Of course, we all know what happened. September 15th came and went and Microsoft made no announcement at BUILD, nor updated their site to show us "Where's My Update?" or anything really. Finally, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore came out and said it was just a rumor and "we've always said fall". Since then, we've seen some major apps and Xbox LIVE games get updated, Taiwan roll out the update and imploring devs to update their apps to boot. We still maintain that something was to happen on September 15th and now that seems to be confirmed.

In the leaked Orange France memo, which is too detailed not to be real, the very first paragraph states:

"A partir du 15 septembre 2011, nos clients utilisateurs des mobiles WP7 Orange pourront bénéficier de la mise à jour en WP7.5 (intitulée Mango). Les mobiles Orange concernés => HTC Mozart / LG Optimus 7 / Samsung Omnia 7"

Translation:

"As of September 15, 2011, our customers WP7 Orange mobile users will benefit from the updated WP7.5 (called Mango). Orange mobiles concerned => HTC Mozart / LG Optimus 7 / 7 Samsung Omnia 7"

What seems to have happened is there as a last minute decision to forgo Sept 15th as the "launch" day (even if it was a limited rollout), hence why Belfiore didn't just dismiss the rumor days ago (which would have been easy enough to do). Instead, it looks to be pushed back by about a week...more on that later.

In an interesting internal-memo obtained by Smartphone France, the carrier evidently plans to disable Wifi Sharing, Group MMS (which we covered as being potentially pricey) and Visual Voicemail.

Perhaps WiFi sharing, something we've seen earlier , shouldn't be too much of a surprise--after all, it's expensive, especially for those carriers that don't have a built in billing system. So while a downer, not exactly shocking--in fact we expect more carriers to follow. Group MMS seems benign at first, but we documented how this "feature" can be very expensive. In short, it's labeled as "Group Messaging" but instead of SMS it use MMS in order to keep all the messages threaded. Sending out dozens of MMS messages can be very pricey for some services.

Finally there's Visual Voicemail, which is instantiated in a unique fashion in Mango. As a result, carriers seem limited in their ability to integrate the Mango VV with their own system, hence why we probably will, once again, see this on more carriers as well.

While not the end of the world, it's good for Orange customers in France to be aware of what they are and are not getting with Mango.

AT&T bound Samsung Focus S clears FCC

Although there isn't too much information about the phone (nor too much we don't already know about it), the FCC just gave the Samsung Focus S aka SGH-i937 a big thumbs up for passing its tests.

What does this mean? Well, just that once AT&T clears it for their network, have enough in stock and we're praying, actually have an advertising campaign, they can actually sell the darn thing. AT&T says this will be out "in the fall" and thanks to Belfiore, we all know when that actually starts--so a few weeks to save your pennies?

California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington have all jumped on the Department of Justice's bandwagon to prevent the acquisition of T-Mobile by AT&T. Echoing the concerns expressed in the DOJ's lawsuit about the deal killing compettion, New York Attorney General, Eric T. Schneidermen explained in a statement how his state would be affected: "This proposed merger would stifle competition in markets that are crucial to New York's consumers and businesses, while reducing access to low-cost options and the newest broadband-based technologies."

AT&T responded to the news of the new plaintiffs in a statement of their own:

It is not unusual for state attorneys general to participate in DOJ merger review proceedings or court filings. At the same time, we appreciate that 11 state attorneys general and hundreds of other local, state and federal officials are publicly supportive of our merger. We will continue to seek an expedited hearing on the DOJ’s complaint. On a parallel path, we have been and remain interested in a solution that addresses the DOJ’s issues with the T-Mobile merger.

We remain confident that we’ll reach a successful conclusion and look forward to delivering the merger benefits of additional wireless network capacity to improve customer service, expanded LTE deployment to 55 million more Americans, $8 billion in additional investment, and a commitment to bring 5,000 wireless call center jobs back to the United States.

Though AT&T may be hoping to settle with the Department of Justice, it will be more difficult now that the seven states have joined in. An initial scheduling hearing has been set for September 21 where a date for the trial will be set. The DOJ is pushing for a March 19 start, while AT&T is looking to begin January 16.

Windows Phone FaceBook page changed for Mango

Windows Phone has updated their FaceBook page for the arrival of Mango, inviting folks to "Meet 7.5."  The revamped page features a video tour of Mango by Beth Goza, Senior Manager of Windows Phone Marketing.  The tour captures key concepts of WP7, such as People, Communications, Apps, and Internet.  It goes over the basics of the Start screen, Live Tiles, social network integration, gaming, and the newly-empowered Bing.  Nothing Earth-shattering here, but it's a nice introduction for those unfamiliar with Windows Phone and the upcoming Mango enhancements.

Check it out.

Today President Barack Obama signed a bill into law that is being touted as the biggest reform to patent law since 1952.  The America Invents Act changes the way the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office hands out patents from a convoluted, drawn-out process of researching who the inventor of a technology was to a first-to-file approach.  This will shift the burden from the PTO to the inventors, greatly reducing the time it takes to get an idea patented.  The America Invents Act also augments the process of challenging patents that have already been granted, and allows the PTO to patent-related fees.   Speaking of the importance of the bill to both innovation and the floundering economy, Obama had this to say:

“Somewhere in that stack of applications could be the next technological breakthrough, the next miracle drug.  We should be making it easier and faster to turn new ideas into jobs.”

Horacio Gutierrez, Microsoft’s corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of intellectual property and licensing, said in a blog post that the AIA:“will ensure that innovators in our troubled economy can benefit from a predictable and rational patent system, with new tools to eliminate patents that should not have issued and to speed the processing of patents that should be issued."  He went on to say that "a fair, balanced and effective patent system is indispensable to promoting R&D investment, job creation, and economic growth.”

Gutierrez's comments are not surprising given the obscene amount of patent-related squabbles and acquisitions in the past year, which have included Microsoft, Apple, Google, HTC and others.  The potential of companies using patents as weapons has also been credited for recent billion-dollar business moves, such as Google's recent purchase of Motorola Mobility

Hopefully, with a more streamlined system and better review process, the patent world can gain a little sanity, while perhaps simultaneously giving the economy a lift in its step.

In Istanbul, Turkey at Qualcomm Inovation 2011, Qualcomm released information about upcoming Snapdragon architecture Krait , which will feature full support for Windows 8. Leading the way in the smartphone market (and dominating Windows Phone 7), Cristiano Amon, vice president of product development at QCT (Qualcomm CMDA TECHNOLGIES), said the following about Windows Phone 8:

"When we go to the Windows Phone 8, we can with the fact that we again work with them [Microsoft] and our work position speed look forward to probably be the first to market with a Windows Phone 8 platform."

While we're aware that Microsoft wishes to bring their ecosystem closer together, this is promising news that hardware manufacturers and chip brains are working harder at bringing the next-gen tech to Windows Phone.

For those looking for a sweet deal, you may want to to take a look at Amazon Wireless. They're running their special sale again where upon purchase of certain phones, you can get a $50 Gift Card, good towards accessories or anything else.

Seeing as the Verizon HTC Trophy (review) is going for $0.01 (2 year new contract), if you throw in this gift card, you're actually making $50 which ain't half bad. Don't forget, you can also unofficially throw on the final version of Mango on this phone right now, making this a killer combo. Head here to Amazon Wireless for more info.
