Vodafone has today announced the launch and availability of the Nokia Lumia 720, which will be the first Windows Phone with Joyn pre-installed, according to WindowsPhoneApps.se. What's Joyn exactly? It's a service that provides instant messaging, file transfer, video calling and more. It will be launched and supported by multiple mobile operators, as opposed to being a third party service.

We’re getting a few reports in today that Verizon has begun rolling out some tiny firmware updates for their HTC 8x and Lumia 822 smartphones.  Indeed we fired up an 822 to be greeted with a small update that took less than 5 minutes to install.

So what’s news? Well, this appears to be a very, very small update meant to be a quick fix for some nagging issues. We say that only because your radio, firmware and OS versions will not change with these updates. That tells us that this is basically a firmware patch of some sorts, meant more for tweaks than new features.

We've received a tip from a reader that Nokia is conducting a consumer study of a product and is seeking a handful of participants. It's touted as an opportunity to provide feedback to help the company improve its products. Nokia is listening to the cries of consumers. This could well be nothing, but it's worth noting, especially if you're interested and have been contacted.

Microsoft has often been criticized for not making effective commercials—something we think that has changed recently with the Surface campaign (and back stepped with ‘Scroogled’). But what about Windows Phone? We’ve seen some interesting ones in the past but nothing that could potentially go viral (or not be cringe worthy).

That may have all just changed as a new YouTube ad has gone live on the Windows Phone channel and if this doesn’t raise consumer curiosity, we’re not sure what will.

Samsung has announced that its expanding the ATIV brand to include its Windows based PC products. There's more than what's usually visible in the Windows Phone universe. When we talk about Windows Phones these days, we always talk about Samsung, HTC, Nokia, and sometimes Huawei. But if you remember, there was another name briefly manifested in our sight, only to disappear quietly later: Alcatel.

Back in last December we reported a low cost Windows Phone called Alcatel One. Since then there hasn't been much update about this very device. Until today, as it's suddenly available in China, through locally popular e-commerce website 360buy.com, and under the brand "TCL" (Alcatel's joint-venture partner in China).

Huawei's Ascend W1 has been out for a while, and is gaining market presence in more countries at the moment. Today, the OEM quietly rolled out the CDMA version of W1 in China, starting with the city of Chengdu. The CDMA phone is made for China Telecom, the third largest mobile carrier in China, and the only CDMA carrier out there. The Ascend W1 in CDMA reportedly costs CNY 1,290 (US$ 210), about 30% more expensive than the WCDMA version, which is currently priced CNY 998 on popular e-commerce website 360buy.com.

The Samsung ATIV S Windows Phone is currently available at mobile electronics retailer Expansys UK for just £269. That's just over £250 for a high-end smartphone. We've previously reviewed the ATIV S - it's a superb price for anyone who's looking at picking up a Windows Phone 8 handset.

If you’re the type of person who is constantly on the move, a jetsetter perhaps, you’ve probably used or heard of Uber sometime in the past few years. The service and its applications allow users to connect with private drivers in select cities around the world.

Simply select your location and when you want to be picked up and sleek vehicle will be there for you. Cars available range from Lincoln Town Cars to BMW 7 Series or a Mercedes-Benz S550 sedan. Bad news if you’re primarily a Windows Phone user and want to use the service since the app has been unpublished from the Store.

Is HTC having a fire sale? Maybe. All we know is their solid and dapper HTC 8X Windows Phone is being offered via Groupon for a very reasonable $349 with free shipping. That’s not for an AT&T version but a fully unlocked one with LTE bands (though those won’t work on AT&T).

Collect 142,369 online customers service reviews published before March 30, 2013 and what would you expect to find? Are customers more satisfied with their iPhones? Maybe they prefer a Samsung Galaxy something? Nope. A lot of them preferred their Nokia handset across all the carriers here in the U.S.

Latest figures released by Kantar Worldpanel shows that Microsoft is actually starting to perform rather well in the US, one of the more important markets for the company. So much so that the platform is growing at a slightly faster rate than Google's Android. Microsoft still has a tough mountain to climb to tackle both Android and iOS, but it would seem as though the third position is firmly in its grasp.

So what can one do with a pair of HTC 8X Windows Phones, a pan / tilt gimble, WiFi network and a block of wood? It's a superb question and one that HTC engineer Garrett Rysko can answer. A post over on the HTC blog walks us through how an advanced baby monitor was created for his lab partner, Derek Feri. While it's one expensive baby monitor kit, we always enjoy covering DIY projects.

We've been informed that Liquid Daffodil has finally managed to get its Unification app listed on the Windows 8 Store, enabling consumers to download and utilise the notification centre across the Windows ecosystem. So what's Unification all about? If you're not familiar with the name, or have somehow missed our previous coverage, it's a notification centre that pulls in and stores alerts and notifications from third-party apps.

Now this could be everything, or it could be nothing at all, but Joe Belfiore has teased on Twitter that he may have something for the Windows Phone community (or rather the general public) in the next few days. The manager of the Windows Phone division at Microsoft recently celebrated his Birthday and was greeted by numerous messages on the social network.

A little while ago we mentioned the AT&T Digital Life app that allows you to control various aspects of your home from your Windows Phone. With the service you can control everything from locking/unlocking your front door to turning on the lights to monitoring your security system.  The problem back in March, when the app first appeared, was that the Digital Life service wasn't available.

Today AT&T announced that the Digital Life service has launched in fifteen U.S. Markets including Atlanta, Austin, Texas, Boulder, Colo., Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Riverside, Calif., San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis and select areas of the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area. AT&T plans to introduce Digital Life in up to 50 markets by the end of 2013.

Gameloft’s Ice Age Village just launched for Xbox Windows Phone 8 yesterday. If you enjoy the town-building genre or the Ice Age movies, it’s a fun and addictive game. It’s also worlds better than Bug Village, so don’t let that early Windows Phone 7 misfire put you off from trying the game.

All that said, we have some good news and bad news to share with you now. This article covers the bad news. One of Ice Age Village’s advancements over Bug Village, its social integration is just about completely broken at launch. Read on to learn about the kinks in the works and whether we can expect Gameloft to take care of the situation

Way back in November we told you guys about DVLUP, a Nokia sponsored rewards program for Windows Phone developers. It’s a cool community for developers and worth checking out if you’re in the scene. The program is ran by a bunch of Nokia Ambassadors, who are always doing crazy cool things. Lance McCarthy recently ran a hackathon that produced some cool apps. Now George Salcedo is doing something wild with another ambassador, a 1965 Rambler Ambassador to be accurate.
