Rumors

We're only hours away from Nokia's event in Abu Dhabi tomorrow when we expect the company to announce multiple devices. One of them is the Lumia 1520, which has now more of its protective covers leaked online. Twitter profile Evleaks (has been accurate in the past) has published the above image on the micro-blogging service, showing off some cases in black, red and white.

Nokia World 2013 kicks off in Abu Dhabi this week and while the company is expected to unveil numerous new devices, it's also believed we'll see more details emerge surrounding "Bittersweet Shimmer." What is Bittersweet Shimmer? It's Nokia's next major update for Lumia Windows Phones. Alongside Microsoft's Update 3, Nokia will bundle its own firmware and software updates.

Even though we’re a day away from Nokia World, it doesn’t mean leaks can’t still happen. The latest this morning is for the Nokia ‘Guru’, which was revealed by evleaks to be akin to an “iPod Shuffle with NFC” built in.

While Nokia has been known for their phones and well-made accessories, it’s not too farfetched to imagine them making a music accessory.

Nokia World will soon be upon us (in fact, we're already on our way out there), but that's not halting leaks and more from being published. Evleaks, a Twitter profile which has been fairly accurate in the past, has posted what are reported to be specifications of the Lumia 1520 - aka. "Nokia Bandit." While we'll be able to bring you the announcements, hands-on and more from the event floor, what are we looking at here?

Microsoft will have Windows 8.1 out the door shortly, but what will follow the update? Mary Jo Foley over at ZDNet has heard from sources that the Windows team will release a small Spring 2014 update alongside the release of Windows Phone 8.1 "Blue". That pushes back the Windows Phone 8.1 expectations back by a few months, as it was previously hinted to be early 2014 instead of the Spring.

Not only that, but sources suggest we could well be looking at the Windows Phone OS being used for hardware with larger displays, superseding Windows RT.

The Verge reports that Microsoft may well be looking to relax its requirements regarding the hardware capacitive buttons on Windows Phones. Currently, OEM partners include three buttons on the front of each device; back, home and search. These have been with the platform since launch back in 2010, but we could well be seeing a slight change with potential hybrid hardware and more when Windows Phone 8.1 is released.

Nokia is looking to pump out new hardware next week at its Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi. As well as expected tablets and smartphones, the company is also working on accessories and other technologies. Now a tweet published by the rather accurate @evleaks Twitter account suggests Nokia is working on an iPod Shuffle-like, portable music player.

We’re under two weeks away from learning all about what Nokia has in store for Windows Phone and Windows 8. On October 22nd, Nokia will announce a wide range of new devices in Abu Dhabi for both platforms. The two rumored devices that we're most excited about are the Lumia 1520 and 2520. The first is a “phablet” running Windows Phone 8 with a 1080p display, while the second is a tablet on Windows RT.

We haven’t seen a cyan device from Nokia in quite some time, but it looks like the tablet is going to bring it back.

This morning we’ve received some confirmation from a trusted source about the Verizon Nokia Lumia 2520, the 10.1-inch Windows RT 8.1 tablet with the codename ‘Sirius’. The tablet will be Nokia’s first Windows RT 8.1 tablet, though certainly not the last as AT&T and others are expected to get the device too.

Pricing is set for $499, which matches Paul Thurrott’s earlier reporting, and it should go on sale to Verizon customers on November 17th (possibly the 18th). Colors options available to customers include “black and red” though it’s not clear if those are separate options or just one. It will feature 32 GB of internal storage with expandable memory.

Back in September, Evleaks revealed on Twitter that Nokia was working on a dual-SIM version of Lumia 720. So far, the device hasn't materialized in front of us yet. But according to latest rumors, it's still on the way: Nokia's dual-SIM isn't dead yet.

Citing an unnamed insider source, Chinese tech site WPDang reported that both Nokia and HTC are currently preparing several dual-SIM Windows Phones. Unlike on some Nokia feature phones where you are allowed to shove in two SIM cards, but only one will work at a time, SIM cards in these devices will work simultaneously.

The Verge reports that "Batman" is actually the internal codename for a new low-end Windows Phone from Nokia, not the Lumia 1320 / 929 as reported by @evleaks. It's believed to sport a large display, be an affordable smartphone and it may fall in the 6xx range. According to sources familiar with Nokia plans, the handset will be placed just above the Lumia 625, a low-cost Windows Phone with the largest display on any Lumia device.

Updated 5 PM ET: While the core of this render is accurate, the screen itself was created by one Florin N. who tipped us that this is not a new "leak". Still, the 1320 vs 929 info is accurate.

A new render of the Nokia Lumia 929 has been leaked on the Chinese micro-blogging website, Weibo. The render is the same as we've seen previously from other accounts, but details have also emerged that we could well be looking at the Lumia 1320 for regions outside the US. Nokia is set to unveil numerous handsets and other hardware at its Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi later this month.

Microsoft guru Paul Thurrott is reporting on some new information regarding the upcoming Windows Phone 8.1 update aka ‘Blue’. He notes that the info comes from a single source, though he has confidence in the information revealed.

What’s discussed isn’t so much the superficial UI changes or new features but rather core user experience deviations that should cause a stir amongst the Windows Phone faithful.

We won’t recapitulate all of Thurrott’s revelations, but we will highlight a few of the more interesting ones.

This morning we reported on a list of unofficial (and incomplete) changes coming in the double punch GDR3/Bittersweet shimmer update later this year. One of those new features, noted over the weekend by leakster Nawzil, were optional color choices for Nokia’s ever-evolving Glance screen.

Tonight on the Chinese social-network Sina Weibo, a low resolution (but clear as day) photo has leaked showing what Glance looks like in green. We have to admit, it certainly looks sharp. In the lower part of the display you can also see a pending notification, something which has been confirmed multiple times now.

There’s not much to go on here…actually, there’s nothing to go on here, but leakster Twitter account evleaks has posted that there is a ‘Lumia 1320’ on the way and it evidently has the codename ‘Batman’.

What to make of it? The ‘1320’ designation suggests a new class of Lumia, positioned somewhere between the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 1020, perhaps something along the line of a not-so-big device i.e. less than 6-inches.

News this morning has come out regarding some more changes coming to Windows Phone 8 General Distribution Release 3 and Nokia's Bittersweet shimmer. Most of these features we have been aware of for some time, in fact we re-capped them on Saturday with the Glance screen information, but there are a few new tidbits to give a clearer idea of the big picture.

The info comes by way of Nawzil, who has been posting quite a bit of information regarding Microsoft and Nokia’s plans for the upcoming OS and firmware update. We have heard that GDR3’s features have been briefed by Microsoft with various people recently, so we’re not too surprised to hear information is now coming forward—leaks are leaks.

So what’s new? Let’s take a look.

File this one under mildly interesting, but if you head to Nokia’s website and type in ‘2520’ the results reveal a new FAQ section entitled ‘What is a tablet?’. Clicking the link though doesn’t reveal much except a generic placeholder quote stating “The tablet lets you access internet, see movies and listen to music.”

Of course, Nokia has had a tablet-like device in the past, namely the Nokia N800. As a result, typing in just ‘tablet’ will bring up numerous links referencing that device. But it is interesting that something as specific as ‘2520’ will return a result with ‘tablet’, meaning this isn’t a coincidence i.e. typing in a random four-digit combo doesn't bring back the same result.

A new leak has been published on Twitter by the account @Nawzil8. The tweet shows an image detailing what we can expect to see with the upcoming Windows Store gift cards. Said cards have been covered previously, so while we recommend you take this with a grain of salt, it's certainly plausible. Microsoft has added the option in Windows Phone Wallet, signalling to the ability to load said cards onto a Microsoft account, which will then be reflected in the Windows Phone hub.
