Rumors

Update 2:30 AM ET: We have secondary confirmation that these images and features are authentic. More information at the end of the article.

Later this year, towards the November time frame, Microsoft is rumored to be releasing Windows Phone 8 General Distribution Release 3 (GDR3) along with alleged new firmware from Nokia named “Bittersweet shimmer” (originally reported by the site Nokiapoweruser). The OS update will once again enable new hardware features like advanced Qualcomm processors and 1080P display resolution, but it will also have numerous enhancements for current devices. The release will coincide with the availability of Nokia’s Lumia 1520 with a 6-inch display.

Tonight, a poster in the Windows Phone Central Forums with the handle xs2k has posted alleged screenshots running Windows Phone 8 OS Build 10484, supposedly taken from a Lumia 920 developer device picked up on Craig’s List.

Windows Phone Central has not been able to verify the authenticity of the screenshots but it does match what our inside sources have revealed to us off the record.

Recent updates by Nokia may reveal forthcoming additions to expand Lumia functionality for users

Nokia has been churning out quite a few updates lately for its Lumia Windows Phones, especially for those with the Amber update. The last few system app changes, notably Extras + Info yesterday and Display + Touch for today, simply moved those settings into their own categories.

While that is seen as a fix for discoverability, there are few other deviations that have been noticed as well that may be a sign of things to come.

The popular Twitter profile Evleaks has released a full render of the Lumia 1520, or "Bandit." Previously publishing a screenshot, showing how the new Start screen will be configured on a 1080p display, we can now spot that very same screen capture in the render above. There's not a lot new in the image, except for the rear of the handset where there's no 41MP hump.

Since today there’s less news about the Microsoft-Nokia acquisition floating around, we can return to business as usual: writing about Windows Phones. Specifically, the Nokia Lumia 1520 aka the rumored 6-inch device that is expected to launch in November.

There have been two high profile leaks of this device lately, including a real photo of the 1520 and a screenshot from the 1080P display revealed by @evleaks.

One of our Windows Phone Central Forum members, Rohan Vg, threw his modest PhotoShop skills at the problem and combined those two images into one (seen above). It gives us a better look at what the finalized device may look like.

As if 2013 could not have been a more pivotal year for Microsoft and Windows Phone, news tonight coming from Bloomberg claims that Redmond is still considering buying out BlackBerry.

BlackBerry has publicly revealed that they are seeking “strategic alternatives” for the company, including a merger or selling off the entire company (or pieces of it). In and of itself, that is big news although BlackBerry did do the same in 2012 and nothing came of it. Could this round be any different? Perhaps, as their new operating system, BB10, is not exactly setting the mobile world afire.

Microsoft has always been rumored to be interested in BlackBerry, but they are perhaps waiting for the right time. That may include waiting for Waterloo to shed some of its 17,000 employees and become a leaner purchase, or for BlackBerry to become cheaper and more desperate.

With rumours and speculation pointing at Windows Phone GDR3 including support for 1080p HD displays, Evleaks has today added fuel to the fire with a leaked screenshot from the Nokia "bandit" device. The image is 1080x1920, a resolution Windows Phone does not currently support, but it's reported to be from the Lumia 1520 "phablet", possibly packing GDR3.

The Lumia 1020 is already available for consumers to pre-order in Russia, but a definitive date for when the Nokia Windows Phone 8 handset will launch in the country is unknown. Just like Europe, consumers are waiting for the manufacturer to bring the niche Windows Phone to market, which has been stated to be arriving later in the year. Now WP7 Forum has been informed by sources that this date is in fact October 11th.

Last week, Windows Phone Central reported on firmware being visible on Nokia’s servers for the Lumia 928 disclosing a “red” edition with a new product code: RM-860 VAR VRZ RED (059R227). At the time, the speculation seems to point to an obvious conclusion: Verizon and Nokia were gearing up for a red Lumia 928 to help refresh the line.

Now, an image posted by Nokia US on their Facebook page appears to reveal the glossy, candy-red device for the first time. The image posted was not meant to highlight a red Lumia 928, but instead bolster the chemical testing process Nokia uses to ensure that the polycarbonate they use holds up under duress.

Seeing as it’s the weekend, a holiday one for those in the States, it seems appropriate now to highlight some guesstimation on the size of the Nokia Lumia 1520. Sure, we’ll know more in the coming weeks on the actual dimensions but there’s no harm in adding a little math to give a rough idea.

Revealed in a photo earlier this week, the Nokia Lumia 1520 was placed next to the Lumia 1020 for size comparison. Windows Phone Central can now confirm that the photo is legitimate through a second source who attested to its authenticity. Based off of that image, forum member Cornelius took a break from his bachelor thesis to calculate the Lumia 1520’s exact size.

The first purported photo of the rumored Nokia Lumia 1520 Windows Phone with a 6-inch 1080P display

At the end of September, Nokia is reportedly going to reveal at least two new devices here in New York: their Windows 8 RT tablet, codenamed Sirius and the Nokia Lumia 1520 phablet.

The Lumia 1520 will feature a huge six-inch 1080P display, a polycarbonate body (not metal) with a 20 MP PureView camera akin to the Lumia 925’s design, specifications that we revealed last week from our verified sources. The device will also feature a quad-core Snapdragon CPU and Windows Phone 8 GDR3 for the new 1080P support.

The image above was leaked to us and while we cannot confirm it, we have a suspicion that is accurate. For one, it comes with what looks like an optional back case with a front cover to protect the display. We also wouldn’t be surprised if it adds Qi wireless charging capability as well. It's placed next to what appears to be a Lumia 1020 for size comparison.

By all accounts, the Nokia Lumia 928 on Verizon, an exclusive variant of the 92x series, is doing quite well. Verizon has steadily picked up Windows Phone market share in the US, mostly at the expense of AT&T and it helped bring a flagship Nokia device to one of the most important carriers in the States.

Currently, the Lumia 928 is only offered in glossy White or Black and while the device has a solid specification list, it could stand to be spiced up a bit in the looks department. That’s why the 1328 OS ROM spotted on NaviFirm Plus with the label RM-860 VAR VRZ RED (059R227) has piqued our interest. The other two versions, both white and black, are already listed but that Red variant and product code is something new.

Smartphone insiders @evleaks tweeted a simple, but straight-forward message about the Nokia 6-inch Windows Phone 8 device codenamed "Bandit," denoting that it will officially be called the Nokia Lumia 1520. @evleaks has a longtime track record of being correct with the information they release, so we think the chances are pretty good that we'll be hearing the name Lumia 1520 soon.

According to a report over on AllThingsD, the departure of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is more sudden than what was portrayed by the company's announcement. Ballmer will be retiring within the next year in a planned transition with a replacement to be found. The board of directors will be working with executive recruiting firm Heidrick & Struggles International to get the best name for the job.

It was only on Friday that Microsoft announced that current CEO Steve Ballmer would be exiting the company in the next twelve months, but that hasn’t stopped the media from speculating on who will replace him. The Sunday Times of London is now reporting that Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, who used to work under Ballmer as a senior executive—something that always bothered Nokia advocates who saw him as threat to the Finnish phone maker—as one of the favorites for the position.

One could argue that Elop does have the skills to turn around companies who are seemingly set on a wrong course, though he doesn’t come without controversy either. Many former Nokia supporters have consistently called for his ouster since his famous burning platform memo, which called for drastic change within the company for it to survive.

Team members of the Xbox One division might just find a special gift under their trees this holiday season – a special white edition of Microsoft’s latest gaming console.

An image was leaked on Reddit by user Kinect10DLL and showcases a white Xbox One unit with the inscription “I MADE THIS” engraved on the front. Xbox team members will also receive all one player launch titles, a year of Xbox live (something you imagine wouldn't be hard to obtain for someone working on the Xbox team), and a special Live achievement.

Generally speaking, if you don’t see Windows Phone Central report on some magical sounding rumor, it’s because we either know it to be false or don’t have faith in the story—not because we’re behind. And while we’re not perfect either, the recent report of Nokia Executive VP Chris Weber supposedly telling the Bangkok Post that Instagram was coming to Windows Phone, seemed highly unlikely.

Windows Phone Central has learned that AT&T is poised to grab the Nokia Lumia 925 and that it will be launching mid-September on the US carrier. The thin and sleek aluminum Lumia will reportedly be the black version and cost $99 on contract.  We have confirmed this information with two trusted sources.

The Nokia Lumia 920, currently sold on AT&T as an exclusive, will continue to be sold along the Lumia 925. However, its price should be dropping to $49 (from $99) on contract around the same time as the 925’s release (possibly even beforehand).
