WPCentral News

We're all excited and buzzing to see exactly what will be included in the Windows Phone 8.1 update. If anything from today's reporting is to go by, we're in for a major update, which should address the complaints from both Windows Phone owners and the general public who have steered clear of the mobile platform.

Since the update isn't far off, we've set up a new forum for discussion to take place covering the Windows Phone 8.1 update.

Here at Mobile Nations we like to think of ourselves as being real tech for real people. And we know that in addition to owning smartphones, real people go on dates, send each other photos, have sex, and all sorts of other stuff. The smartphone is playing a greater and greater role in all of that, so we wanted to know just how you are using your smartphone to get it on.

We're not afraid to ask the prickly questions. Even that leads to us finding out you're into prickly things (to each their own).

Now, I know where your brain is going, and we're not suggesting that you engage in sexy times with your smartphone (that's weird and a potential trip to the ER), but we know that plenty of you use your smartphone to facilitate said sexy times. So we've put together this little survey that delves into how you use your smartphone in kinky and not so kinky ways

We want you to be fully honest with us, and to have some fun. After all, there's nothing at stake here. Except for maybe your dignity. So hit the link below and, uh, get it on.

There are a handful of official apps on Windows Phone for all the various social networks out there. Google+ is of course notably absent, but why use that when we’ve got Twitter and Instagram. We have official apps for both Instagram and Twitter, but we also have solid third-party clients from the strong developer community on Windows Phone. Be sure you never miss a moment of Windows Phone news by following Windows Phone Central across your social networks.

Just in case you thought we actually slept around here, we have new updates to share with you today. A fairly substantial one for our new Windows 8 app which is already live and waiting, and a small patch for our trusty Windows Phone offering which we're expecting to be published later today.

You can pick up the Windows Phone app from the marketplace right here including a free unlimited trial with ads, and you'll find our Windows 8 app here in the store for free with advertising. Curious as to what we've been working on this time? Check after the break to find the full change list for both apps.

Last week, we finally took the veil off of the official Windows 8.1 app for Windows Phone Central. Since then, it received a quick patch to address a network issue. It’s also maintained a healthy 4.6 rating (out of 5) with many positive reviews from all of you.

But you deserve better, and we’re prepared to deliver. Our lead developer, Jay Bennett, is expecting version 1.1.0.4 to land in the Windows Store this week, maybe even as early as tomorrow. I’m looking at the changelog and see no less than 17 new or improved features.

The Mobile Nations Community Update, January 2014

Welcome to the second edition of the Mobile Nations Community Update! I’m James Falconer, Community Manager at Mobile Nations. If you hang around the forums at Android Central, CrackBerry, iMore, Smarwatch Fans or Windows Phone Central, chances are we’ve crossed paths. If you haven’t, keep reading and I’ll bring you up-to-speed on some of the most awesome stuff going on in our communities.

Early January was an incredibly busy time for all of us. Not only did we launch the brand new Smartwatch Fans site (headed by Editor-in-Chief Adam Zeis), we also produced #CESlive with our good friends at GeekBeat.tv. CES was a whirlwind of activity, and producing a live show alongside our usual coverage of the show was a huge undertaking... Yet we pulled it off without a hitch. If you tuned into our coverage, I hope you enjoyed it. If you didn’t, check out our recap video (it’s worth a look).

2014 is off to a great start. Mobile Nations is growing. Our staff, volunteers and members remain passionate, dedicated, and eager to take on the coming year. I hope you’ll join in the fun that is (and will be) 2014.

Today I’m experiencing the wide variety of emotions that comes with launching a new app into any store. I’m thrilled that we’re finally able to share it with you, exhausted from all the time spent getting the underlying code functional and incredibly nervous about how it will be received and whether there will be any major bugs!

So with all of that in mind I’m very proud to present to you the official Windows Phone Central app for Windows 8.1, version 1.0 of hopefully many! Windows store apps can take up to 24 hours to show up in search results but you can find our app ready to download right now right here! If you want to go and grab it then come back and read this article please do, but I’ve got a lot to share with you so make sure you come back!

The Nokia Lumia 920 launched in early November in 2012. That’s over a year ago. The phone was heralded as the flagship phone to showcase Windows Phone 8, which launched alongside the Lumia 920. It’s an awesome phone and laid the foundation for devices like the Lumia 925, Lumia 928 and Lumia 1020. Let’s talk about the Lumia 920 and see how it’s holding up.

2013 was an amazing year for Windows Phone Central. We have witnessed the site and our community grow by leaps and bounds. Believe it or not, we actually get more visits to the homepage of WPCentral.com on a daily basis than any of our other Mobile Nations sites currently do (Android Central, CrackBerry, iMore). That's pretty crazy as they are all big destinations of their own. It shows just how much Windows Phone is taking off and how WPCentral is right in the middle of all of the Microsoft, Windows Phone and Nokia action.

We're already #1, but we want to do even more in 2014.

We've been growing our editorial team steadily this past year, and have been branching out beyond just killing it on the Windows Phone coverage on the blogs, and in the forums. We're covering Xbox, Windows 8 and more, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Before we get too far into 2014, we wanted to do a quick check-in with our readers — that's you —to get your feedback on how we're doing and what you want to see more (or less) of this year. It'll take a few minutes, and we'll love you for it!

Also, at the end of the survey, you'll be able to enter for your chance to win a Nokia DC-50 Wireless Charging Plate for your Lumia (or if you win and don't have a Lumia, we'll hook you up with something else that's awesome). Thanks for taking the survey, we appreciate it!

Take the WPCentral 2014 Reader Survey!

A few days ago we asked you guys and gals what apps were still missing from the Windows Phone Store. The response was overwhelming. At the time of this writing there are over 2000 comments, which means there are a handful of apps you still want to see make the jump to Windows Phone. I have a few personal favorites that I still want to see come to the platform, one of them is QuizUp. Not familiar with the game? No worries, we’ll go over it after the break. We don’t have any word on whether or not on official app is coming, but we do know that überdeveloper Daniel Gary is working on an unofficial client for Windows Phone. Let’s go over what QuizUp is and take a first look at Daniel Gary’s version called QuizIt.

There’s no denying that Windows Phone is the mobile operating system in third place. A distance third, but third nonetheless. It’s still got a lot of work to do in order to catch up to iOS globally before it even can have Android on its radar. The latest numbers from the IDC put Windows Phone at 3.6% marketshare, while Android and iOS are at 81.0% and 12.9% respectively. What about apps?

CES 2014 is but a memory, having wrapped up nearly a week ago. But that doesn’t mean we can’t re-live some of our greatest moments. Hence, our #CESLive wrap up video, which will hopefully convey how massive this co-project was between Mobile Nations and Geek Beat. That’s why we compressed it into a spritely 2 minutes and 33 seconds, all done in that super cool time-lapse style.

We had 80 guests take to the stage over the course of 4 days, which we brought back to you LIVE. On top of that, the entire Mobile Nations team across Android Central, CrackBerry, iMore, Windows Phone Central and Smartwatch Fans were blogging like crazy to bring you the stories from the show as they happened.

It was awesome. It was ridiculous. And we can’t wait to do it again next year. Missed any of our coverage? Head here to see it all:

Pouch is a popular Pocket client for Windows Phone. You may recall earlier this month of a Windows Phone Central contest where we asked our talented community to come up with a new logo for the app. We've received some superb designs on our community forum and the time has now come for a winner to be selected, which is where we require your assistance yet again.

Head on past the break to see our shortlist and choose your favourite design.

We talk FitBit at #CESLive!

It can easily be said that most of the WPCentral Staff are fans of the FitBit line of fitness trackers.  We all climbed on board last year during Fitness Month with the FitBit One and many of us have progressed to the FitBit Force.  It was a pleasure to have Lindsay Cook from FitBit spend a little time with us on the #CESLive stage.

Lindsay highlighted the FitBit Force with its digital display.  She also shared that an accessory line from Tory Burch is in the works for the FitBit Flex to dress up the device a bit.

We first learned of Sphero during last year’s //BUILD/ conference and the little robotic ball made a nice impression on us.  Fast forward to CES 2014 and we find that Sphero has grown tremendously.  Ian and Adam from Sphero spent a few minutes with us at #CESLive to show off the company's fantastic robotic products.

The robotic ball is controlled and programmed through your smartphone or tablet with a set of achievements that can be earned that will unlock performance features.  In addition to the original Sphero ball, the company showed off their latest product, the Sphero 2B which is slated for release later this year.

Phillip Nelson from NewTek spent some time with us today at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show to discuss the company’s latest product, the TriCaster 860.  For those not familiar with NewTek, the company provides technology products for internet broadcasting.  Their goal is simple; let people get their hands on the tools they need to make a “real” TV show, not just a funny YouTube clip or home movie from Dad’s camcorder

The TriCaster 860 is an all-in-one integrated, live production system that offers the power of a live network studio.  Often described as a TV Truck in a Box, the TriCaster is designed so a single operator can use it.  Our friends at GeekBeat TV have had success with the system and it has performed fantastic this week during our CESLive broadcasts.

Day 0: CES behind the scenes

Monday was our first day at CES, but the conference does not officially start until Tuesday, January 7th. The show floor was still being prepared, but we walked around for a little preview. Want to know what it’s like? Watch the video after the break for a quick look behind the scenes.

The team has arrived, the gear has been unpacked, and we're ready for #CESLive. This is our biggest year at CES yet. All totaled, we have 22 people on the ground here in Las Vegas covering the content for all our sites this week, including CrackBerry, Android Central, iMore, Windows Phone Central and the newly launched Smartwatch Fans. Aside from the usual faces, the Mobile Nations family is once again teaming up with our friends at Geek Beat: featuring podcast pioneer Cali Lewis and tech evangelist John Pozadzides.

We'll be covering all areas of tech whether we're talking health and fitness, automotive, home technologies, smartphones, tablets and more. CES is the spot for it all and generally the spot to get a first glimpse at a lot of the cool new technologies that will soon be hitting our lives. Some will make it, others we'll never hear from again, and that's what makes it all exciting!
