WPCentral News

Nokia is set to unveil their latest mobile photography addition to their Lumia line, the Lumia 1020, this Thursday, that hasn’t stopped them from launching a new website dedicated to cameras.

Heading to www.nokia.com/global/experience/photography/ users will be treated to news, tips and tricks for taking better photos. While the current focus is on the Lumia 9xx line, including the Lumia 920, 925 and 928, we’re pretty sure Nokia will update the site with “1020” info as well as soon as that device goes live.

What seems to have been a lifetime ago, we announced a photo contest where the winner walks away with a Nokia Lumia 928 Windows Phone from Verizon. Well... the best laid plans of mice and men were overturned by a little event known as //BUILD/ and determining a winner was delayed a wee bit.

Our delay is your gain in that along with a grand prize winner, we're tossing in two runner up prizes (gift cards to the WPCentral Accessory Store). It took a little head scratching but we've pick our three winners.

Apparently Microsoft aren't the only ones with a new rapid release cycle! Somehow today I get to announce a third update to the official Windows Phone Central app in the same number of weeks. Before anyone gets too excited though, this one is just a quick tune up to the v4.3 feature set, fixing two important bugs and finally bringing forum likes to Windows Phone 7 users.

Yes, we figured out why the Tapatalk API wasn't allowing the WP7 build to send like requests in our forums and that has now been resolved. Still, this isn't the most exciting update, but you can find the change list after the break or download from the marketplace right here (it should be showing up as version 4.3.15).

Halo: Spartan Assault is coming to both Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8. It marks the first time in the franchise’s history that it won’t be on console or PC. It’s also the second time there will be a departure in gameplay from the series trademark first-person shooter experience. This past week at //BUILD/ we learned a bit more about the upcoming game. We also have a better picture of when it should be on your Windows Phone 8 device – the middle of July.

Last week we pushed out an update to our app with a few new features, bug fixes and speed improvements, whilst also promising that a second part of that update would be coming this week. Well, that time is now and you can pick up the second release of v4.3 for both Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 from the marketplace right now.

This release contains an important fix for Windows Phone 8 users where using the lock screen wallpaper functionality was causing the app to use up more of your storage than it needed to. That problem is solved now and we've even included a new button in the settings that will clear out all files held by the app in temporary storage for those of you who like control over your gigabytes. See below for what else has changed.

Remember TuneWiki? It’s an app we talked about way back at the end of 2011. The popular service provided users with scrolling lyrics for their music in addition to meanings behind songs. And unlike most services, they had an app for Windows Phone relatively early in the lifecycle of the OS. Not bad for a startup. Unfortunately, the service is shutting down at the end of this month.

Most of you were unable to come to our swinging, swanky, super special launch party for Talk Mobile 2013 that happened exactly one week ago tonight. Because of that, we’ve recapped the event for you some super delicious HD video.

All in all, we had 680 of you phone geeks come out for our 3 hour rager. Truth be told, this was one of those events that could have gone either way: lots of fun with free alcohol and kicking music, or a bunch of dudes hanging around, awkwardly looking at their phone screens. Luckily for us, it was most definitely the former as the party was quite spectacular.

It's time for another update to our official Windows Phone app, and this one brings functionality many of you have requested: lock screen wallpapers. If you're a die-hard fan of the site and just can't get enough Windows Phone news, or even want to bring the news front and center for a week or so, you can enable our app as your wallpaper provider to get the latest headlines on your lock screen. Our wallpaper colours can also be customised with the full range of Windows Phone accents, and you'll even get article images appearing when you're using our flip tile. Find and enable all of these options from the app's settings screen.

That's not the only new feature thought, we've also finally included support for playing videos through Metrotube, switched to the Nokia advertising exchange (for free users only of course) and updated Unification support with in-line images. See below for the full changelist as well as a few samples of what you can do when customising our lock screen.

Last night on our adorable BlackBerry Q10 for T-Mobile (don’t ask, we like to drink and dabble in technology), we received a text message that no doubt many T-Mobile users received: an advertisement for the upcoming Nokia Lumia 925.

The message was simple: “Where style lives, this phone rules. Get the sleek, new Nokia Lumia 925—only from T-Mobile.” followed by a pre-registration link.

Sure, you can’t have the phone now but we’re thinking it’s just a matter of weeks before the Magenta carrier unleashes Nokia’s thinnest and sleekest phone yet. While our Q10 was not really a long-term investment for us, it must sting a little if you just bought it or a Samsung GS4 and are now learning about the Lumia 925.

What do you think? Too aggressive by T-Mobile or just right? Let us know in comments.

We’ve teased it for weeks but now it’s time to unveil what all that ‘TM13’ business was that was such a big secret. TM13 stands for Talk Mobile 2013 and it’s our new program that will elevate the discussion of mobile beyond just platforms and who is better than whom.

The event is based off of our Round Robin program, which we did years ago. That event involved all of the head editors trading phones for a week and then reviewing the experience. While fun, that was a 2008 thing and this is 2013: all the platforms have basically caught up to each other and have become outstanding options. No longer does one dominate the conversation and neither will it here.

Talk Mobile isn't a one day event. It's a discussion that will carry on across Windows Phone Central, CrackBerry, Android Central, and iMore for the next several months. We've picked 10 important topics in mobile and cooked up a whopping 50 Talk Mobile features that we'll be publishing across the sites that are going to spark a lot of conversation.

UPDATE 7:30ET: After 1K entries, give or take, we've closed off comments! Come back in 60 minutes for the top 5 choices and a chance to vote!

Okay folks, let’s play good news/bad news. The good news is Itsdagram, as an Instagram app, is here to stay for now.

The bad news is it needs a name change, font change and new icon….all in the next 24 hours. We’ll leave the details to your mind as to why that is, but for now, we just need a new name.

That’s where you come in...

You may have noticed an update available for our app this morning, and perhaps you're curious as to what has changed? It's not the most exciting patch but we are aware of issues that users of 512MB devices have been experiencing with the app and are working hard to try and fix these problems. Patch 4.1.3 is intended to fix said problems by reducing the memory footprint of the app with slightly lower quality image when running on the lower spec devices such as the Lumia 520, 620 or 720.

If you have been experiencing any kind of crashes with the app please update to this version. However if that still doesn't work for you it would be incredibly helpful if you got in touch via app@wpcentral.com. As much as the 1 star reviews in the store make it clear you have a problem it makes it impossible for us to diagnose and fix that problem! Now that we've cleared that up, there were a couple of other things in the patch that were ready at the time, see below for the full changelist.

Over the weekend we gave you a sneak peak at version 4 of our official app for Windows Phone, and we're pleased to say it has now passed certification and is available on the marketplace right here.

So as always please download at your own leisure and enjoy the new features (which we've listed again below). Please note though that voice commands is a paid only feature and is currently only available in US and UK english, something which we're working to improve!
