Cut the Rope makes a surprise Xbox Windows Phone 7 appearance this week

Yesterday we reported that Windows Phone 7 would not receive an Xbox release this week. As it turns out, the information we received was slightly incomplete. The oft-requested Cut the Rope as finally arrived on Windows Phone 7 and is fully compatible with WP8. Instead of Chillingo, this version comes from the original developer, Zeptolab UK.

Cut the RopeA bit of Cut the Rope history: way back in 2011, Windows Phone Central ran a contest in which we asked readers which mobile games they would like to see ported to our OS as Xbox Live titles. One of the runner-up suggestions was Cut the Rope. Now that the game has finally arrived, it has the honor of being the first from our readers’ ten most-wanted games to appear on Windows Phone. Let’s hope more will follow!

Although Cut the Rope has been conspicuous in its absence, we’ve actually had a very good substitute for about a year now: MaxNick’s Spider Jack. That game is a clone of Cut the Rope but stars a spider who eats flies. At last Windows Phone players can experience the original and better known game, though they won’t find a whole lot different in this one.

The premise of Cut the Rope is simple. A little creature called Om Nom arrives on the player’s doorstep. The thing craves candy and it’s your job to give it to him. In each level, a candy hands from one or more pieces of rope. You’ll need to cut the ropes in the right order to make it swing into Om Nom’s mouth. Levels also have three stars to collect by making the candy swing through them. With 300 levels and some fairly unique Achievements (compared to Spider Jack), this one should keep players busy for a while.

Cut the Rope costs $.99 and there is a free trial no trial for some reason. Get the full game here on the Windows Phone Store.

Nice to see this was made by the original developer. Hopefully this is a sign that the platform is starting to attract more of the mainstream app developers' attention.

inteller says:

not really.  This game had been in the works for a while.  What you are seeing are games at the end of the WM7.x pipeline that had been in the works for months.

kenzibit says:

@inteller is 100% right

ousooner314 says:

Ah! Thanks for the clarification. At the very least, it still looks good for the WP Marketplace when there are big name apps being added to it. Hopefully this trend continues.

tbonenga says:

Yes and no glitches. All the achievements pop for a perfect 200. You don't have to gold star every level. So just keep going and everything will pop.

Delin95 says:

There's no free trial on my device.

morpheus1982 says:

I installed it a few hours ago. The game doesn't load from the pinned tile on my 8x, and the aspect ratio doesn't fit my screen. Perhaps the latter is an issue with supporting both wp7 and wp8. The aspect ratio on angry birds space is fine.

ousooner314 says:

I bet you're right - Cut the Rope is compatible with WP 7.5 and up, and so it has to support the smaller screens. Out of curiosity, how are you liking your 8X? I'm deciding between that the 920 for my next device.

morpheus1982 says:

The phone is very very nice to touch, look at, and stroke lol. As long as i get a sat nav solution, Nokia can go jump. Looks-wise this has to be the best on offer. Also that crappy xda developers app actually runs fast on this!

puredrive07 says:

Will all WP7 games/apps work on WP8 devices?

Paul Acevedo says:

Some WP7 games currently crash on WP8, such as Big Buck Hunter Pro. But by and large they do run fine on WP8.

puredrive07 says:

Thanks! Can't wait to upgrade to the 920 from my 900; just have to decide on the color, lol!

RaRa85 says:

I just bought the game before spreading this article. 5 stars here and only .99. Just get it.

Coan says:

The article made me aware of it, but after playing it on Windows 8 RP/RTM, I don't need a trial and at only a dollar, I really can't argue too much about getting my moneys worth...

Nakazul says:

It popped up on marketplace when I was looking in there and bought it strait up.

RaRa85 says:

Yep me too. Great replay value.

I thought every Live game had to have a trial. Weird.

Dome85 says:

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure we'll never see any further update... :(

Sean Guy says:

Not available for my HTC Arrive.

myrandex says:

Bought it no problem here on my Lumia 900.

caliborn says:

I just installed it on my Arrive.  Had to do a search for it though.

TofuDelight says:

The windows 8 pro version isn't for Xbox live. Hopefully that will change

RobinPaul says:

They should let us use Microsoft Points also (for the xbox WP games), cause some of us don't live in the US and have no credit card :/
& need trail version :)

sundawg#WP says:

So if I buy this for my 7.5 phone, will I have to buy it again when I upgrade to wp8? (not that it is overpriced or anything...more of a general question). What about games like this that are also available on Windows 8 (PC)...do I have to pay again to play it there (all on the same Microsoft account mind you).

Paul Acevedo says:

WP7 games can be redownloaded on WP8 devices, yes. Windows 8, no.

DavidinCT says:

I grabbed this game, I have been waiting a while for it...

tylerh1701 says:

Grabbed it, thanks Paul.  Nice to see this game pop up, and love the price!

judas2100 says:

Nice game....and decent price too..

Bernard Wei says:

Just bought it, $0.99 is a good price.

I'm getting errors when I try to purchase, both on my phone and through the web interface.  Anyone else having trouble?

defblue says:

I'm getting the same error.  I'll try it again later on.

It finally worked via the web marketplace.

Well it says:This app is not available on your device or country...bla bla.
I have a Htc Titan in good old Germany. What is going on there, never experienced anything like that. Anybody?

blackfire says:

Wow!! I really like how smooth it is on WP7. It is much smoother than on my Surface RT. It is a fun game, and I really hope they end up releasing a version optimized for WinRT.

jmshub says:

I was getting laughed at for just getting a game that has been out for a long time on iphone. But regardless, it's a fun game, and I am enjoying it!

gectra says:

Haha. So long waiting for it. I bought it already :D.

futurix says:

I hope there will be a native WP8 version with support for 720p screens...

Pity about the Trial :( Would have bought it if I had Marketplace support :(
Will M/S bring new country support with 7.8 or will I have to buy a new phone to be able to buy stuff off the Marketplace?

The achievements are incredibly easy, got all of them in about 3 hours.
