Nokia releases official Sydney Morning Herald app for Lumia phones

Just because it’s Sunday it doesn’t mean that Nokia can’t release new and exclusive apps for their Lumia customers. Today it’s Australia’s turn with the official Sydney Morning Herald (SMH) app being released.

The app is based off of the site www.smh.com.au and even boasts some advanced Windows Phone 8 features, like the latest news and image to your lockscreen (akin to CNN’s app)...

The app itself is laid out quite nicely with it’s white background and matching Windows Phone 8 accent colors, using mini flipping Tiles within the app for digging down into other news stories and categories. The full feature list is as follows:

  • Alert user of the latest news
  • Customizable tiles for news category within the application
  • Display latest news and image to phone lock screen (Windows phone 8 exclusive feature)
  • Read latest news in mobile phone
  • Retrieve local and world weather forecast
  • Live tile to show the latest news

And just because this app is primarily targeted for Austrlian readers, that doesn’t mean that the rest of us can’t enjoy the app too as SMH is region-free, meaning anyone with a Nokia Lumia should be able to download it.

You can pick up SMH for Lumia phones here in the Nokia Collection. Thanks, Sanil, for the tip!

Very nice app. Been using this for over week and it's very smooth and had some really good content for us down under :-)

I wonder when Nokia will release the accessories e.g. charging stands/plates?

? I've personally reviewed the charging stand on this site...they're out on the market.

nizzon says:

Ok. Not available in Sweden yet, only very few shops have pre-orders. I guess they will show up soon.

Regular charging plates, as well as the ones with the Fatboy pillow are available on CDON. Not sure about the stands, but they can be pre-ordered at some places.

Praise Nokia for pushing more apps for users - but it would be better if it were Microsoft doing this

First time i noticed you was when you bullied some user for a joke about gay people.
The second time i noticed you was when you flamed someone, again because he made as joke which you believed was sexist. You ended up reacting like a douchebag.
The third time and the 4th and the 5th and so on i kept seeing you throwing mud at nokia for not releasing their exclusive apps to everyone with a wp. You also have a habbit of moaning about too many nokia ''fanboys'' here and too many nokia news.
Last time i read one of your posts was when you were praising htc for updating 2 of their apps this week. And you did it in a very rude way.
And now you are a insulting a user who asked politely a legitimate question.
My question for you is: Do you have something up your butt?

CJ Thunder says:

It was a subtle joke. Too subtle for one. Too offensive for another.

schlubadub says:

That's something like his tenth account on here as he keeps getting banned for been an árse. Now we keep him around as our pet jester. Just think of him as an angry monkey screeching and flinging poo :P

I've never said anything about Nokia exclusives as I don't really care about apps.

CJ Thunder says:

Yikes! Its a post about an Australian app.

Mattyh95 says:

Yes it is, it was 7.30am on Monday when U posted ur comment along the east coast anyway :P

schlubadub says:

Yep, the article has a timestamp of 2:29am for me in Perth, so 5:29am in Sydney. It's 9am now and time for work :(

Oxygen22 says:

is this a serious site like bllomberg or wsj?

Mattyh95 says:

Its owned by Fairfax Media, its the most highly read newspaper in Australia, its basically the Au version of CNN like Daniel says.

SonOfDad says:

Now we can all read their tech reviews of how crap everything from Microsoft is and how totally cool everything from Apple is......PASS

schlubadub says:

True. They are very biased against MS products

I saw this kind of app twice. Is this kind of themplate for an app they used? I say that because of the categories window its the same and the news section also.
