Lumia 610 now shipping with 7.8 while the Lumia 510 gets a firmware refresh

Nokia is sure paying attention to their entry level Windows Phones as both the Lumia 510, which just came out, and the slightly older Lumia 610 are both getting some Windows Phone 7.8 treatment and updates.

Microsoft noted that devices would start shipping with 7.8 in late December while those with current devices will have to wait a smidge later to get the update delivered via Zune desktop.

First up is the Lumia 510, which actually launched with Windows Phone 7.8 build 8858 but is now getting a routine firmware update. Originally launching with 12460 for firmware, the device is reportedly being bumped to 12490 according to Ubergizmo (who confuse firmware with the OS). Indeed, we confirmed that such an update does exist on Navifirm, noting that it’s the same 7.8 build (8858).

No word on what changes there are with this new firmware but it’s most likely some tweaks and fixes to help improve the user experience. Either way, it’s great to see Nokia giving that device some attention with its rolling launch. The Lumia 510 features a 4” 480x800 display with a 1GHz CPU, 256MB of RAM and just 4GB of storage.

The Lumia 610, on the other hand, has been out since mid-2012 and was Nokia’s other entry level device. It’s been running Windows Phone Tango since that time but like all of Nokia’s phones it’s slated for a 7.8 update. That device is now being sold through various retailers, including Carphone Warehouse UK with the update pre-installed.

Reader Joe sent us his extended video tour of the 7.8 OS on the 610 with a mixed opinion. Clearly the 256MB of RAM is limiting some of the performance on the device, including Nokia Drive which evidently crashes often resulting in the designation of “rubbish” from Joe. Indeed we have heard some mixed things regarding the lack of speediness of 7.8, which we can only imagine is augmented by having low amounts of RAM and 800MHz CPU found on the 610.

No word on the exact timeframe for Windows Phone 7.8 to rollout but we’re expecting some news within the coming weeks, especially with CES and Mobile World Congress just around the corner.

no 7.8 build for any lumia has the lenses , nokia will probably release cinemagraph and other lenses as standalone apps :)

By the time I'm able to upgrade to a wp8 phone. (April) I should be able to get this. Wonder if it's worth it to upgrade. When is 7.8 coming to phones already out? If lower end models already have it on theirs.

7.8 come out already for all users or at least give a date to legacy phone users Jesus they have dragged this right out!! Meh!!

Any day now, people.  Just sit by the pc and have Zune open and ready to go.  Have your USB ready.  Go to the bathroom now, because I don't want to hear about it later.  I'm not stopping.

I just reminded myself of some comedy sketch/movie...I forget from where.  Where one person tells the other, "Dial 9 and 1 and when I say go, dial 1 again."

It's from the Simpsons.  It's the episode where Bart sells his soul for $5.  He races over to Milhouse's grandma's house (where Milhouse is staying since his house is being fumigated) in the middle of the night and knocks on the door.  She has them dial 9 and then 1 before she opens the door.

Indeed we have heard some mixed things regarding the lack of speediness of 7.8 .. That is not good news for guys like me waiting for the 710 to be updated to WP7.8. Is it really sluggish and slows down the device?

The 7.8 update I have still doesn't support Microsoft Account (outlook). Judging from the pictures, this does though.

data sense lol thats what hes trying to figure out. Speaking of data sense when are we getting it for the 920

Not happy with having to wait for these up dates for so long. We have 2 L 710, 1 L 800,and a L 900 that i wanted to update for Christmas wile i was home, now these family menbers will have to wait till July for the update.(All of these family members are over 60 and do not own a PC).

I have the HTC titan UK, I myself hope HTC say something regarding thus matter. At least they should do what Nokia are doing. Just keep us updated. Saying that this is similar to those waiting for a Jelly Bean update on Android handsets. But they don't have to wait over 6 month after announcement!

i don.t know about the rest of Europe, but in the UK you can update your Lumias FOR FREE at any Nokia Care Point what i did yesterday (v.7.10.8858 now, they have it  for 2 weeks already, it took 1 hour to flesh it.). But don't expect to have everything Nokia promised for update via Zune- there is still no BT file transfer,  Ringtones Maker, Cinemagraph etc.
My L 800 has got 3 sizes of tiles, additional themes colours and Bing screensaver -that s it...
Just check on nokia website your nearest Nokia Care Point in Greece, mate!
