Mobile Nations fitness month week 1: Exercise!

It's February and you know what that means? Mobile Nations Fitness Month! That's when we all get together to get in shape, share tips and tricks and recipes for success, review amazing apps and accessories, give away great prizes, and have a ton of fun! This year we're doing it a little differently, though. We're doing weekly themes, and that means every week you'll have new and exciting challenges, and new chances to win!

Week 1: Exercise!

We want to get in shape and feel great! Exercise helps us in so many ways. It helps us lose weight, reduce stress, feel energized, and improve our self-image. Getting moving reduces the likelihood of diseases, and keeps us healthy and as we get older.

As part of fitness month, we'll be reviewing a bunch of great apps and accessories that can help motivate, track, and train us to exercise better and smarter. We'll also be doing a couple of cool contests.

Stepping up contest

First is our Mobile Nations Stepping Up contest. Every day this week there'll be a thread in the forums, and all you have to do to enter is tell us what exercise or activity you did that day. It can be walking or running, playing soccer or doing yoga, swimming or dancing -- anything that makes you move. If you have a Fitbit, Nike Fuelband, JAWBONE UP, or any gadget with a pedometer, you can simply share your results each day.

This is a great way to keep us all motivated and accountable, and get a little healthy peer-pressure going! Plus, every day you enter is a chance to win a $20 gift certificate!

Exercise MY way contest

Second is our Exercise MY Way contest. Just head on over to the Exercise MY Way thread in the forums and tell us how you use your Windows Phone to stay in shape. What are your favorite apps? What are your go to accessories for keeping fit? How does your device fit your active lifestyle? We want to know! We'll post the best entries on Friday, so get them in ASAP! Need more incentive? We'll pick one winner a week and send them a $100 gift certificate!

So what are you waiting for? Mobile Nations Fitness Month starts NOW!

If there is one thing to quickly demotivate unfit people its pictures of super super fit people on articles telling you to get fit.

Studies have shown that hanging around healthy people, seeing photos, reading fitness magazines, etc. with "fit" people actually helps motivate folks since it sets a positive goal. Of course the goal needs to be realistic but c'mon, you DID see Kevin in that video, right?

Ultimately though, motivation comes from the fact that *you* want to change, not blaming the outside world for not presenting it right ;)

Is there an app to take a self picture and then thin your face out automatically?  If you can see YOURSELF thinner, that would be more motivating to me than seeing a bunch of other ridiculously fit and overly good looking people doing healthy things.  I have seen fat apps (that make you look fatter) but do they go the other way around?

I tried a lot of things... diets, running, etc... What worked for me was picking up a sport and committing to it, and it took me a while to find a sport I'd enjoy, turned out to be squash. My goal was to make squash a part of me, and accomplishing that required me to adjust my diet, sleep habits and work out at the gym. It all tied in well.

We'll be talking about things like that, specifically How can technology help motivate you to get in shape/stay in shape?

I'll explain more later today in a separate post.

Sam Sabri says:

How does that unmotivate you? If anything it should motivate you. This is what you can achieve to if you work out.

Its about realistic targets. Same issue with magazine models being photoshopped. In fact I'd be interested in the source of the photo going with this article and how much of it is photoshopped.

And if all else fails, there are some great apps in the Windows Phone store to Photoshop yourself thinner.

'Played' the nike+ kinect game today (which has an accompanying wp app) and it is a great workout with a 4 week schedule to get you fit!

This looks good. There's a nice little set up i have going best way i find on my windows phone for keeping fit.

My fitness pal - for food tracking as fitbit doesn't have alot of uk brands so my fitness pal helps out there.
Endomondo - for tracking things that my fitbit can't like swimming or weights.
And my fitbit for tracking daily movements.

Best of all they all talk to each other, Linked them all together and never need to worry about it. Just log and go brilliant.

And bar from my fitness pal all of the above have counter parts on windows 8/RT which make it even easier to track my fitness.
