Windows Phone 7.8 Update

Forcing the Windows Phone 7.8 update: Camera button not required but patience is

If you've checked your Windows Phone 7.5 device for the 7.8 update with no success, you may want to try to force the process, just as we did with other Windows Phone updates like Mango.

This is a little different than downloading and installing Windows Phone 7.8 manually, which we reported on earlier. With this method you're basically tricking the Microsoft servers to recognize your Windows Phone and initiating the update early. Think of it as cutting in line (and Microsoft is okay with this, no worries).

The other benefit with this method (versus the CAB one) is it means you are getting the official carrier/OEM update that usually includes the firmware too. If using just CABs you are updating the OS but not any device specific software. That's not a bad thing but it's really not ideal.

How to

Forcing requires patience and the ability to disconnect your computer from the internet. Make sure you have the Wifi and your data connection turned off on your Windows Phone and connect to Zune.  Go to settings and check for an update and as soon as you click the "Update" link in the settings you'll need to disconnect from the internet.

Let Zune come back and tell you that it can't check for an update right now, reconnect to the internet and you should see that an update is now available. Timing seems to be key and it may take you a few tries to get things just right (took me six tries).  From there you follow along with the update wizard and your Windows Phone is updated.

Windows Phone Updates

If this trick doesn't work, it likely means that the update files for your device aren't out there on the servers yet to be installed.  We were successful in forcing the update on the AT&T Nokia Lumia 900 but couldn't get the HTC HD7S to update.  When all was said and done, the Windows Phone version ended up being 7.10.8858.136.

Interesting note on the 7.8 update is that it provides support for devices without a camera button. More than likely this is for future low-end devices like the Alcatel One Touch where the lack of a camera button will keep production costs down.  You may see this in a smaller update that installs before the 7.8 update goes through.

Step by step instructions to force the Windows Phone 7.8 update

  1. Connect your Windows Phone to a PC and launch the Zune software
  2. Click on Phone > Settings > Update. Allow the software to tell you whether an update is available. If so, skip this guide. If not continue to the next step.
  3. Time to force the update. Click another button (any of the options above or below the word Update). Then click the Update button again, and this time disconnect your computer from the internet after 1-2 seconds. Do this by pulling out the Ethernet cable, disabling Wi-Fi, etc. If it says your phone is already up to date, you didn't disconnect quickly enough and need to try this step again.
  4. Wait 30 seconds or so and Zune should display a notification that an update is available.
  5. Now reconnect to the internet and continue with the update process through the Zune software.
  6. Depending on what OS build you are starting with, you may be prompted for several OS updates
  7. Let the phone update and wait. The final OS build is 8858. If you are getting just 8779, you'll want to repeat 1-4 above
  8. You may also be prompted to install a firmware update at the very end, follow through with this
  9. Celebrate! The whole process, including backup could take up to 60 minutes. Check that you are on build 8858 to see if you are done.

What if this method just doesn't work?

This won't work for every Windows Phone out there, only those that are officially designated for the 7.8 update, so your experience will vary.

If you don't get the update, it can mean one of two things.

  1. Your software update is literally not on Microsoft's servers for your phone/carrier. Try again in a few days.
  2. Your update may never come.

On the second point, we're not too confident generation one devices or Sprint's Arrive will ever "officially" get this update, which is why try as they might this method will never work. For you folks, you'll have to do the more tricky manual CAB method. That will do the job but obviously it won't include any firmware. C'est la vie.

Let us know in the comments if you've had success with the forcing trick to get the update.

Right now I am in Mexico with Telcel. I cant get the trick to work.
What dou you guys think my problem is?

I want to sell my Samsung Omnia W, Microsoft Dose know about the Basic Mobile Features , OS smart but Fail in User Satisfaction and the APPS+Games Market HUB, Am suggesting macrosoft plz give us fully access of Mobile Customization, not for Specific Country, Google isn't doing that neither Apple OS as per my knowledge, at least apple has a Multiple App that user can easily get used to, really such Painful Bad Experience while Using such OS and there supports

worked for me great... had to try a few times to get the timing right and install two different updates.

I am not getting any success to get the 8858 update by this method. I only managed to get 8779 which is an intermediate update with some bug fixes...

My phone is the lumia 610 and I've tried the process above about 20 TIMES BUT NOTHING HAPPENS. after putting the internet on again the screen remains with CAN'T CHECK FOR UPDATES RIGTH NOW.
some one help please

Hi,
you may need to check how long it takes to zune to respond to update request. follow below steps

  1. Be Connected to internet
  2. Choose Update and count how long zune takes to say Your phone is up to date
  3. If Zune has taken lets say 5 sec. then choose update again and disconnect the internet at 4 sec. and zune will show update in available
  4. Connect to internet and continue with update

Worked for me in UK on unlocked Lumia 800 and Omnia W. Had to do it 3 times for each device to hit 7.8, but patience pays off!!

Worked for me. I've lumia 900 AT&T. I switched the phone to airplane mode, then connected to Zune. While Zune update checking animation was on, I disabled the internet connection. zune showed the udpate available button. Reconnected internet and upgraded the phone. Thanks

i tried it so many times, but it doesn't work :( zune says that my phone is up to date, or cant find update cause it does not connect to the internet

Do you have to have the Tango update for this to work??? I am still on Mango
HTC HD7 on T-Mobile USA

My nokia 710 is updating.
Tried several times.
Worked after disconnecting the internet after 10 SECONDS.
I think it depends how far you are located from the Windows server. (Me from Belgium)
I would advice to start at 1 second and try every time a second later until it works.

i would just like to add something. i was trying and trying for what seemed like hours and i was getting mad. i did all the first few steps, disable wifi and data, plugged in my usb and opened zune then did an update. so my updates were going too quick and saying my phone was up to date too quickly. so what i did was unplugged the usb from my laptop and made sure my internet on my laptop was on. i had to do 3 different updates to get to 7.8 i got the first one after about an hour... so anyway i had my internet on on my laptop and plugged in the usb and waited till it said searching for updates then i just started hitting the key on my laptop that disables the wifi over and over and over about 6-8 times id say then i just stopped. believe it or not i got my last 2 updates in about 5 mins. i was just mad and kept hitting the key. i was tired of timing it and counting to 5 then 6 then 7 and nothing as working. this worked for me so maybe give it a shot if your having trouble getting the timing down.

hope this helps someone....
jeffy

I have been struggling with this for a few days now. Finally i read a bit more carefully about disconnecting the phone from the wifi... (doh)
Well got the update going first try after that....
Omnia 7 (South Africa)

I've been trying this force update for dayssssssss now. I can not get it to work. I dont understand why I still haven't even gotten a pop up notification on my phone. ATT Lumia 900. How should i be disconnecting my internet? All in one PC wireless connection w/charter cable.

Works like a charm - just updated my Lumia 800 from 7.10.8773.98 via 7.10.8779.8 via 7.10.8783.12 to 7.10.8858.136.
Btw. I always needed several tries to get the new update, but got there finally - THANKS!

I have a Nokia Lumia 900 and was already on 8779.  It took me a number of tries waiting around 2 seconds to get the 8783 prompt.  Once I was on 8783, I wasn't getting anything with 2 seconds again.  I tried monothiest's suggestion for 5 seconds and I got the prompt for 8858 on the 1st try.  After updating to 8858, the Nokia firmware update prompt appeared immediately after.  I'm running 7.8 now.  Thanks for the awesome tip...!   :)

worked flawlessly on my Samsung but my Lumia 900 (unlocked) updated and the tiles wont resize.  Any clues

Guessing that your first update only got you to version ending in 8783
Go thorough another round of ethernet cable unplugging fun until Zune says you have another update available. That one should get you to your final "fully updated" destination.

I have an HTC 7 Pro from U.S. Cellular and from what I could find online I was most likely not going to get the update soon if ever. So I looked into flashing it on my own and dealing with all that. I used the Seven-Eighter tool and it worked like a charm! It literally took around 10 minutes! So happy and so far there are no flaws at all!

Blow-by-blow of an unlocked HTC Surround on Telus:
3:15 PM - Got it to work after a handful of tries. 8773 to 8779.
3:30 - detected 8783.
3:33 - 8783 installed.
3:34 - Found 8858! OMG!
3:38 - Angry tweets about how Telus has dropped the ball on this one. #Iwant7point8
3:45 - All done.
3:55 - Realized I've been playing with the new tiles for 10 damn minutes now.

Just got my daughters HTC radar to updtae 7.8, had to force it 3 times though as it wouldnt find each small update between 7.5 and 7.8. took a while but shes happy now. Thanks

As reported by many others, it's a matter of timing the disconnection of the ethernet cable and whatever is going on at the MS server side of things.

After at least a dozen tries per session, over two different days, I finally 'held my mouth right' and got Zune to respond that there indeed was an update ready for my locked Nokia Lumia 900 on the AT&T network.

My only deviation from the steps listed in the article was turning off cellular data (as some have suggested), however I had many, many failed attempts even in that configuration before getting the magical "An Update Is Ready" response. It didn't hurt, but it wasn't a magic wand either.

It does seem that you need to have a FAILED attempt right before the successful one.

You may get to go through all of this fun at least twice as my first update only brought me to update ending in 8783  Another round of ethernet unplugging fun later, a double update of the WP software giving users 3 tile sizes, etc. followed by a "NOKIA Update for Windows Phone" in the same update session was installed and ready to go.

If you've not had luck before... just keep on trying! I did, and the "Successful Update" message(s) after all the effort makes the work worth every moment.

finally after 2 days of hard worked to get the WP7.8 on my nokia lumia 800..
it's a success~!!! everything worked great for now, hope it will for a very long time..
i almost want to sell my lumia and thinking to buy blackberry z10, but after i got my wp7.8 update + got the bluetooth share + also the ringtone maker.. i changed my mind and will stick with my lumia..

anyone in denmark have any luck with a Lumia 900 unlocked? do have Onfone as my tele-company.
want my 900 upgraded to 7.8

I have just run the force process as specified in the step by step instructions.
I have a wired connection, it has taken about 7 attempts to get it right but the Lumia 800 v2 is now updating.
I started by pulling the ethernet cable from the PC but it was too fiddly so repositioned my router next to me then started pulling the ethernet cable to the PC out of the router immediatley on clicking 'update' in Zune, it didn't work & told me it "couldn't search for updates at this time" I then repeated the process, each time increasing the duration I waited after clicking 'update', as I said...several attempts, it was on counting 5 seconds from clicking 'update' to pulling the ethernet cable that I got notification that the update was available!
This has been a farce and I am horrified that so many people with relatively new/current phones have had this issue. If Microsoft are serious about breaking into the mobile technology market they have to do a hell of a lot better than this.
Hope this little post of mine helps someone else out!?!
Good luck my littler tech heads and don't be afraid, just go for it with a little patience and a lot of confidence, it WILL work! :-)

I red all the coments and tried everything, I came up to the conclusion that you have to do the following :
- Turn on Airplane mode ( Safest way to disable all data wireless connections)
- Connect your phone to Zune
- Go to Settings>update in the same time start to count the seconds with a watch. Unplug your Lan cable off your computer or stop the wireless connection exactly after 2 seconds. If you have a message other that " There is an update for your phone" , then you have to do the same procedure but now counting 4 seconds, if it fails try the same with 6 seconds and then 8 seconds, and then 10 seconds till it works. Mine work on the 10 seconds. I did 4 times update using 10 seconds.
Tip: Be precise with the seconds.

Awesome!!! it worked for my lumia 610... :) this is the best way of doing it! its important to put the flight mode on...

George Ponder,

The information is ambiguous. You give different steps under How-to and step by steps section. Please be careful from next time.

Greetings!
My procedure that worked:
- selected Setings -> Update button and started to count, after 6 seconds it displayed "Your phone is up to date"
- selected Update button again and counted to 4 and a half, disconnected LAN and voila "Update is ready"
Now updating to 7.10.8779.8
Good luck!
UPDATE 1: Same procedure for updating to 7.10.8783.12
UPDATE 2: Same procedure for updating to 7.10.8858.136
UPDATE 3: There is also a Nokia Update for windows Phone (for my Lumia 800)

Also it is MUCH easier to use this method IF you have a Focus, Focus Flash, or Focus S. PLEASE SPREAD!!!!

1) Open your mobile browser and go to: http://www.kremese.sk/debrand_focus_s.zip
2) The file will be opened. Follow the instructions and tap on “debrandfocuss.xml”
3) Press Start
4) Navigate to Phone
5) Dial ##634#
6) Type *#9908#
7) Select DebrandFocusS
8) Press Save and Reboot
After that, connect to Zune and you will receive the 8107 update.
After you open the folder and get the blank screen in the web browser continue with step 4.
ONLY USE ON BRANDS STATED ABOVE!!!!!!!

I can now confirm that I finally got it to work on my HTC HD7(Which was running 7.5 Mango). I could do the trick twice and in two different regions, once in the United states and the second attempt was in Sweden, simply because I own two computers which are set to different regions but I am sitting behind a swedish ISP. My HTC is a T-Mobile UNLOCKED phone and now running on Tele2/Comviq.

I got it to work on my Nokia Lumia 710 on Petro-Canada Mobile (Rogers).  It did take several tries but in the end it worked.  The tip about estimating the range of seconds between getting the cannot update and no update available messages and trying to disconnect inbetween the 2 seemed to do the trick for me.
Why do we have to do this at all?  Can't this be made available to all phones without messing around with disconnecting?

This didnt work like forever on my US Lumia 900 which I am using in India. Followed the below steps to make it work:
WP 7.5 8779 to 7.5 8783 (older firmware updates only)
1. Switched off wifi on phone.
2. launched zune on PC and connected phone.
3. Clicked settings -> phone -> update and waited for no update msg.
4. Clicked error reporting in same menu.
5. Clicked update again and waited 8 secs and switched off wifi button or ethernet on PC/Laptop (Probably because net connection is slower here. ).
6. Waited for update notification (Keep trying if it doesnt work. Need to unhook phone, close zune and repeat steps)
7. Switched on Wifi on laptop and Updated to 7.5 (8783) version. (Mine had an older firmware 7.5 8779).
wp7.5 8783 to wp7.8 8858
Repeat steps for 8858 (7.8) except that now wait only for 4-5 seconds and turn wifi off.
1. Switched off wifi on phone.
2. launched zune on PC and connected phone.
3. Clicked settings -> phone -> update and waited for no update msg.
4. Clicked error reporting in same menu.
5. Clicked update again and waited 4-5 secs and switched off wifi button on laptop.
6. Waited for update notification (Keep trying if it doesnt work. Need to unhook phone, close zune and repeat steps)
7. Switched on Wifi on laptop and Updated to 7.8 (8858) version.
Now Nokia is also pushing another update ... Downloading it.. Hurray.

Same situation as you but each time I try this I get a message that " unable to connect to the internet". I tried all variations from 2 s to 8s but no avail. Is yours an unlocked AT&T? I am still on 8779- sigh

My goodness gracious....finally it works for my favourite toy,an unlocked AT&T Samsung Focus S (i937) in Malaysia.
It really tests my patience & perseverence to the maximum....holy cow!!!!
It is not taking me seconds or minutes....but hour & hours of patince on this crap nightmare.
My credits to Window Phone Central & all the staffs concerned for making this a breakthrough & a success even though had me waiting like a stupid fool while updating this shit.

Just have my AT&T Focus updated to 7.8 this morning.  Timing of disconnnecting the internet connection is the key, and it depends on your connectivity with MS server I believe.  You should first of all test the timing when MS return the message that your phone is up to date, if eg it is 5 seconds, you need to disconnect your internet connection in your another attempt just before 5 seconds.  Good luck and have fun.

I'm from  k miles away ... hong kong ... I bought this focus via yahoo auction site when nokia lumia has yet to come to earth and landed hk

After spending about 2 hours, I finally updated my Lumia 800!!! Thanks for suggesting this simple "cutting in line" way of getting the update! :-)

I did this method to try and force update, it worked but it did someother update instead, it didn't give me the 7.8 update.  It said it was for like support for phones without a camera button.  What do I do now? I'm kind of confused haha

you need to do the same prcess two more times ... this forced update will not automatically bring you to 7.8 like the normal way, so you have to do one by one as there are two other updates before 7.8 .... good luck

Thank you for input how to use forcing method  to update windows 7.5 to 7.8 .Yor guide was very helpful. After couple tries I did it.Thanks again.   Enes

I have an HTC HD7S. I know it says up there that you couldn't get it to update. I figured I'd give it a try anyway, but even with my phone and computer disconnected from the internet Zune insisted that it knew my phone is up to date. Any advice?

Samsung Focus users in the USA on AT&T take heart. I bought my plain vanilla Samsung Focus in mid-2012. After months of waiting for the meagerest update from AT&T (not even the tango update), I took the plunge and updated the phone myself using the CAB approach described elsewhere on this web site. The unplug-your-network-thru-Zune trick worked for me to get the "Mango" update long ago, but never again since, despite way too much wasted time trying.
Once I got the hang of it for the early updates (the disappearing keyboard), I continued all the way through to the end, the much lauded 7.8 update.
Like the warnings say, this requires following the directions meticulously and (to paraphrase the terrorist kidnappers from 1970s TV movies) "to the letter".
Btw, the Focus requires the language packs for English, Italian, French, German, and Spanish.
Worth the effort!

After a whole bunch of trial and error this is now working for Samsung Omnia W GT-i8350 in New Zealand. So far gone through 7.10.8779.xx now on 7.10.8783.12 hoping for the final update next.

I am not sure if this is right, but my OS shows to be 8783. I don't know if I did something wrong, or if its the right update, or if I'm looking at something else entirely.

Took a few goes to get it working on a Lumia 800, but the update is now in progress. Checked for an update, let it say the phone was up-to-date, clicked on another option, clicked back onto update, counted to two and killed the wifi.

I need help on the Lumia 800, i've done step 1-3 but i cannot go to step 4 because it is not showing that an update is available, instead its showing that it can't check for updates  :(

I have installed the first of four updates to a Lumia 710 from 7.5 to 7.8 with the instructions provided. Thank you.

Thanks for the post! After 1.5 hours of trying with different timings I managed to install the 3 updates on my Acer Allegro!!! :)

Thank you so much! I got the notification for the update a couple of weeks ago and when I connected the phone it said no update. So frustrating! This worked like a charm

I just did the force update on Lumia 900, that's on a no-data prepaid plan and it WORKED!!!.  Thank you, Thank  you , Thank you .  I was ready to put the phone back on AT&T with Data( that I never had ) just to get the update.  So it does work!!

I just tried this myself on an unlocked AT&T Lumia 900, and the initial update went well. Unfortunately, there's a NOKIA update that Zune wants to install afterwards that fails every time I try it with error code 8018001E. One site thought it meant low memory but since there's 10gb free on my device I highly doubt it. I'm not worried about it though, i'm just glad 7.8 is running so smoothly :)

I am having the SAME exact issue!!! Had to force 3 updates to get to 7.8 and then was told about the Nokia update.  I am failing now for the 4th time
Have you gotten it to go through yet?  Any issues with 7.8 as a result?
Thanks!

I read somewhere in this comment section, that you need to count the time it takes Zune to display "the phone is up to date", and disconnect internet after the same interval minus 1 second.
For me this trick worked out.
E.g it takes 10 seconds for Zune to show "Your phone is up to date", then disconnect internet after 8-9 seconds on next try.
Using this method, I can get all 3 updates in calculated manner.

I tried to force 7.8 update on my new l510. But what we should after disconnecting from internet after 1-2 sec? I didn't get it. Plz someone help.

I m from Ludhiana(Punjab)...still i m not able to update my omnia w  to windows 7.8...any help??? how can i..

Time God all updates were successfully completed......

followed the way of disconnecting ethernet wire before 2 seconds ( may b 3 sec too) of getting the result  "your phone is up to date".

If you are getting multiple time sequences try even counting sequence.....

what if it says "Can't check for updates. Try again later." ?does it mean i disabled the wifi too early?

I was wondering if this method works for the Window Phone app for Mac. I tried it with my Lumia 900 a few times and I've had no luck.

Nokia 610 Virgin UK
I've been trying to force the upgrade all day to no avail.  Followed all the steps in detail (over and over and over again...) but it's still 7.5 OS 7.10.8779.8
A few others on Virgin forums say they have successfully upgraded to 7.8

Really frustrated!!!

Is not working for me when i press update button got error and cant continue the update. Any idea what to do?

At STEP 4 all I get is error mesage 80072EE2  CAN'T CHECK FOR UPDATES RIGHT NOW. PLEASE TRY AGAIN LATER.  RECONNECT YOU PHONE AND ENSURE PC HAS INTERNET CONNECTION. (paraphrased)
So I never get the UPDATE AVAILABLE after the 30 second wait.  Any ideas?
BTW - I have a Nokia Limia 610.

My Internet is too fast for me to even turn it off in time. First world problems. It makes me angry though how we resort to doing this rather than actually getting our updates on time like we were supposed too. I wouldn't have minded having to update it a second time to fix that live tile problem if I just got the 7.8 update in the first place. Microsoft needs to get their s*** together.

it worked in my lumia710....THANKS..
I KEPT PHONE NETWORK ON AND THAN PUT OFF....
NOT CLEAR WAY BUT WORKED.........THANKS A LOT

my download desnt work from step 2 it stops on step 2 showing 0% for 2-3 hours (after that i turned it off). Please help me. I am stuck up on Step 2.

Has anyone successfully completed this trick on T-Mobile Nokia Lumia 710? I've tried a few different methods and still can't figure it out. The seveneigther isn't even working, I keep getting an error message. Please help :)
