O2 UK announces pricing and availability of Huawei Ascend W1

Huawei Ascend W1

UK mobile operator O2 has confirmed pricing and availability of the Huawei Ascend W1. The Windows Phone was previously reported to be heading to the UK late next month, but the company has announced shipping will begin on March 7th. It's a mid-range Windows Phone 8 smartphone, which was unveiled earlier this year at CES.

So how much will consumers be looking to pay for the device? The PAYG (Pay As You Go) option (basically SIM-free) will see the Ascend W1 go for just £120, while monthly contracts will start from just £13.50 a month. Now that's aggressively priced to hit hard against HTC and Nokia. Huawei is yet to capitalise on Windows Phone and we can already sense the serious competitiveness the company will be bringing to the table.

To remind ourselves on what the Windows Phone will pack on the specification list, we're looking at a 4-inch IPS LCD display (800x480), dual-core 1.2GHz CPU, 4GB internal storage (with microSD support), a 5MP rear shooter and a 1950mAh battery to boot. But there's more good news as O2 will be stocking both the blue and ruby pink variants.

The only issue is the latter colour won't be available until March 17th - apologies folks. But at that price we can't imagine anyone complaining about another few week's worth of waiting. Huawei will be pushing this mid-range Windows Phone as an alternative to the massive supply of Android handsets that don't offer the butter smooth experience which is guaranteed with any Windows Phone.

What's more is The Ascend W1 will be going up against the new Lumia 720 and Lumia 520 Windows Phones that were announced by Nokia at Mobile World Congress. It'll be interesting to see how Huawei markets the Ascend W1 in the UK to build interest in not only the platform, but the brand as well. As a side note: O2 will be launching the Lumia 920 in March.

Be sure to head on over to the O2 store (or check your local branch) for more information.

Great price - same as the 620 was on a 1-day only sale. Waiting to see what the 520 costs first though - definitely need more than 4 GB for OS, cache, apps and games.

well you need 4gb alone for "other" :)

Ha! My other is 5.49 gigs, biggest of any category.

If I need to choose: Huawei at £120, or Lumia at £150, there isn't even any need for a consideration. You may buy a Huawei once, but usually people are clever enough not to buy them twice.

(Sure, they may have done something magically different this time, but I doubt it heavily)

Agreed that 4 GB is going to go real quick. Must be aimed at social network people plus email more than apps, photos, music, and videos. Especially with the Other storage issue. Battery, processor, and specs quite decent.

Where are the high end Windows Phones at? Low and mid range are good, but damn!!!!

I bet until the System on Chip specs are updated we won't see anything

The 920 and 8X are already out; the 920 has lots of technologies that the competition doesn't, at least until the HTC One is released next month, and the 920 was out 3 months ago... If you're looking for 97 cores and 163838362GB RAM, well windows phone doesn't need it, and it won't be of any benefit to WP devices. Android needs it because it is slow, cumbersome and bloated.

Nice to see huawei can manage to get colours out straight away, unlike Nokia...

A good price for the phone but I cant help but feel phones like this and the 8S are useless with only 4GB of interal storage. I dont use lots of apps but the handful I wanted took up all the space on my 8S, thats why I got the 620. I really think MS should make manufacturers put in 8GB as a minimum for these phones. Even for emerging markets. They are smart phones as if you can install apps on them well you might as well get a candy bar phone in my eyes.

Is there a way to find out how much space my apps use on my current device htc titan , I fancy a cheap 8 device but these small storage is a big concern.
