Microsoft pushes out new updates for Surface RT, Surface Pro

Surface RT system update

It’s “Patch Tuesday”, the traditional day where Microsoft tends to push out some major OS fixes and updates and while it used to be a big Windows day, it’s increasingly more important for Surface owners. That’s because the Surface, a work in progress, is constantly getting tweaked for performance and usability. Today is no different.

Both the Surface RT and Surface Pro have numerous updates queued up for installing, including a few for Office 2013. The bigger deal though is the included firmware, which once again will hopefully fix a few lingering issues some of you may still be having.

Here’s the Surface RT Changelog for April:

The April cumulative update includes improved Surface Wi-Fi reliability, connectivity in various scenarios, and performance improvements including:

  • Certain “Limited” connectivity issues resolved
  • Improves Wi-Fi to handle a wide range of access points.
  • Resolves system crashes caused by certain Wi-Fi issues.

Likewise, the Surface Pro too has a similar series of updates:

The April cumulative update for Surface includes firmware and driver updates including:

  • Resolves an issue with on screen touch navigation in the UEFI boot menu.
  • Resolves some Surface Type and Touch cover connectivity issues.
  • Support for 106/109 keyboards on North American Surface devices.
  • Resolves an issue where toggling airplane mode would disable the Wi-Fi driver.

Not too shabby. The update on a Surface RT can take around 10 minutes or so, depending on how many of the patches your device qualifies for. To check, simply swipe from the right, Settings > Change PC Settings > Windows Update (bottom).

Microsoft pushes out new updates for Surface RT, Surface Pro

Thanks for the heads up on the Mail app improvement! I just tested it on mine and it is (IMO) major! With that and the addition of the "unread only" view, I don't feel any desire to go to the web interface on my full PC any more.

I experienced issues with RT. I got pro at launch and my wife now has RT. She has not had one issue with RT. I am having lots of WiFi issues on pro, but they didn't start until the first "fix"

i had a problem trying to connect to a wifi offered by a iPhone 4S, the phone it was next to me and every  device near saw the net but my RT.
Other than that no issues here

From what I can tell, it is only happening with my Dual Band G/N router. Does not seem to happen on Lumia 920 hotspot. (although I don't stay connected to the hotspot for long periods of time)

The only issue I see is my Lumia 920 hotspot sometimes wont show up. I have to disable/enable wireless and then its there.

I'm usually shocked or at least puzzled when I hear about RT issues, as mine has never had an issue or been laggy or anything. Great device. The Pro has been a joy as well, though I wish there was some work on improving battery life. I do like how you can change the gamma setting on the pro to get those deep blacks, something you can't do on the RT. Chipset related I would suspect.

Today's update didn't fix it either. Just had the limited connectivity issue on Pro. Boo!

Been playing Gravity Guy on my surface all day after it became free this morning. Definitely need to get a 64gb micro SD asap!

Did u set the Tracking Protection in IE? You can find the option in Desktop IE..Options--> Safety --> Tracking Protection ....get a ad block list ....a good one will be the Fanboy one. For best results, use only one ad block as I have found that using more than makes some sites lock up. YMMV Gl.

Did you let Google install their toolbar when you installed chrome? That sometimes messes with IE.

Thanks everybody! Lots of websites says that need do show in compatiblity mode, wpcentral is one of these. Does anyone knows how to fix that?

Haha same here, its a pretty aggravating experience, although I love my surface no less because of it.

After the update/firmware on the Surface Pro the Wifi didnt improve but got worse. I was getting around 3 to 4 bars signal  and now i'm getting 1 to 2 bars at work. it's sitting in the same spot I always use it.

That's not good. I had no issues - but decided to install the updates. Its going now! STOP THE PRESSES!

I have an older Dell Inspiron 15R running Windows 8 and have experienced the issue where enabling airplane mode disables the Wi-Fi driver. Hopefully this fix (or an equivilent) applies to all systems.

I used to have WiFi issues on my RT, however, it was resolved on a fix previous to this current release. This release seems to imply they weren't quite finished and are still experiencing issues.

I wish the Surface would work with Windows Home Server 2011. So that it would backup to my home server. I guess because it uses a secure boot partition it doesn't work. Hopefully that feature is added to an update in the near future.

Are these updates only for Surface devices? What about x86 atom devices, are they getting regular updates?

They would get the standard Windows 8 updates, but for device specific updates (drivers/firmware) you would have to look to the manufacturer. Some might publish their driver updates to Windows Update, but many have their own update software or they just make you manually download from their website.

Still no pen pressure in Photoshop/Zbrush?  Creatives won't consider Surface Pro until that is resolved.

My power button now works on the first press again.  The last monthly update made it require 2 presses to power on.  Back to one :)
Will be interesting to see if networking issues sorted.  I only had a problem once every few days but it occurred.  And only when my AP was set to AES, never TKIP.

It would be nice if the update fixed the previous mail, people, calendar and messaging app bug that killed my exchange e-mail view in the mail app. Oh well here's hoping! ;-)

I wish the surface keyboard (onscreen) had a tiny trackpad area.  That would be good for websites that work better with mouse than touch.

Thanks for the heads up WPC! I know the site is for Windows Phone but you're fast becoming my one stop for all things Windows. Much appreciated.
