So long SkyDrive, Microsoft required to change name after trademark dispute

SkyDrive

SkyDrive, most of you use it daily and love it. It’s the cloud service from Microsoft that offers storage to your files anywhere and anyhow. If you’re using Windows 8 or Windows Phone it’s also the service that backs up a lot of your settings to create a coherent experience. Unfortunately, you won’t be calling it SkyDrive for much longer.

Over in the UK, a court has ruled against Microsoft in a trademark infringement case. British Sky Broadcasting Group (BSkyB) claimed that SkyDrive infringed on the “Sky” trademark. Microsoft will not be appealing the court’s decision and BSkyB will allow them to continue to use SkyDrive for a period as they transition to a new brand.

So long SkyDrive, it was fun while it lasted. Before you guys and gals shed a tear, the service itself won’t be going away, just the name.

What do you think Microsoft should rename SkyDrive? As long as it’s not something like Microsoft Cloud Storage Cloud Edition 2013 we’ll be good.

So long SkyDrive, Microsoft required to change name after trademark dispute

Damn that sucks !
I like the name SkyDrive :'(
How about CIEL ? French for Sky ... Just don't tell Cadillac ;)

How about the Swedish word for "Sky"?  Oh wait, the spelling is the same!  Damn!  Would it count if they change how it is pronounced?!!!!!  Many they could use LumiaDrive.  I am sure Nokia won't mind!

But what about us with HTCs & Samsungs ?

How about Sky in Arabic , "Sama" ... SamaDrive ? Nah doesn't have the same SkyDrive tone to it

I don't think renaming it to "Live" would be so bad. They already own the trademark. Xbox has Xbox Live and live.com is already fully transitioned to outlook.com which is two clicks away from getting to your skydrive folder. They could further keep the branding tied by calling free "Live Silver" (but just known and seen as Live) and Pro could become "Live Gold" but i do like the "pro" varient better.
What ever its renamed to it better be easy to remember and easy to type. The shorter the better. Live is pretty short and sweet.

How the hell someone allows a company to trademark a simple word as Sky!!!????
I see google's monopoly hands on this ¬¬

Now what consumers are going to be confused if they using microsoft products on the cloud services. they going to say where the hell is my Skydrive, where I store my content and my docs. Microsoft have to inform them the new service name brand to them to find their cloud storage stuff. FUCK U SKY.

AirSpace, OpenAir, NetDrive, The Locker, AirSafe, SatelliteDrive(Satdrive for short), AirWave, WaveDrive, StorageSpace, SpaceStorage, SoftDrive, MicroDrive, CloudRoom, I can go on but I won't.

Aero- could be another prefix to use
Or how about things that fly in the sky?
Like JetDrive...IcarusBox... uh... I dunno.  Does it HAVE to have -box, -drive or -cloud?  What about 'Phoenix Cloud Storage', but just Phoenix for short?

Microsoft should sue every damn company in the EU that puts an X in front of anything. Since somehow they can claim that the word Sky can't be used with obviously ANYTHING else or it's an infringement. What has this world come to with these ridiculously stupid lawsuits. Must be a sign that the end is near.

I have seen a few suggestions that are possiblilites that are already Microsoft brands.   Microsoft, just please do not use Windows in the name!  Something with SharePoint or Azure in the name would make sense.

Azure is defined as "a color that is commonly compared to the color of the sky on a clear summer's day."

Ugh... Once again MSFT letting it dribble down their leg. One of the biggest branded features of the OS and now they have to change the name. These bumbles are frustrating!

first metro and now this, why microsoft keep dropping their brand names so easily? they cant just buy the damn patent troll and keep going like a giant company does? or fight them to dead in the court like apple, this is just pathetic to see a crap company stealing a WORLDWIDE company like microsoft

MicroDrive
CloudDrive
SoftDrive
Nimbus 2000
MicroCirrus
CirrusDrive
AviationSpace
MicroCumulus
StratiDrive
NimboSpace
Lacunosus (this one is here for irony!)

They should just call it "Microsoft Shelf"... You get your docs and pics and just put them on the shelf

i know MS didnt screw this up, but they should stop changeing their product names, Live Mesh --> Skydrive --> dont know yet, and to make this more confusing there is SkyDrive Pro & they released new tool in Windows 8.1 & Server 2012 R2 with limited functionality Work Folders (which is similar to SkyDrive Pro but with limited functionality). Windows Media Player --> Zune --> XBox Music. it is confusing.

YourDrive
YourSpace
YourSpaceDrive
NoPlaceLikeYourSpace

This is stupid. British, what do you expect. Makes me want to send Rupert a stinky bag of poo.

Microsoft should just buy an existing cloud storage company and merge the two services into one.

If apple can make a patent for "rounded corners" on smartphones and sue Samsung and anyone else this should not surprise anyone.

First metro, and now skydive, and both were just silly. Why does it only happen to Microsoft! :(

SkyDrive was never a drive per se. I would prefer they get away from the word "drive." I think it should be either something ethereal like Microsoft Space or something to do with storage like Microsoft Locker or Outlook Locker.

Ha ha ha...How about SkySpace? But I think MySpace and BSkyB or whatever might not like that name...

Microsoft OneScreen or just OneScreen - after all, isn't that the point? Many screens - 1 experience. Obviously, works well with new XBox name and could be extended to windows family for v9 - WindowsOne WindowsPhoneOne. Only problem I see - HTC's use of "One"

FistBox!
Lol

But on the serious side, SkyDrive has been around longer than Microsoft has owned it. Why did they bother doing this now?

The owners of that dumb whatever it is must love apple/android.

The time is coming when every single word in the English dictionary will be patented. Sky, Cloud, Metro... What's next? Beans, Orange, Carrots?

I'm thinking WINDrive. They could even keep the little cloud icon for brand recognition, just add some squiggly lines to indicate a much more breezy service lol. Same number of letters too.

I'd also like to add my voice to the chorus of this thinking this is utterly ridiculous. How the hell does a company own the word sky?!

Trademark conversation to crack addict baby rapist in 5... 4... 3... 2... Really!? Why did you not bring Nazis into it as well? Smh.

I suggest... "Go F Yourself British Sky"
Anyone in the UK that thinks this is ok, you need to push back on this before this company and others roll over anyone they want.

And, by the way, I live in the UK. I get my landline and broadband off Sky and subscribe to Sky TV. I will now cancel all those services and get BT broadband and FREE BT Sports. Over a lifetime, that's a lot of money they've just lost. Hope Rupert Murdoch or one of his executives is reading this.

When I joined WP8, I actually thought SkyDrive was provided by Sky. So there's something in it. As mentioned above, drive is commonly associated with storage, so it's clear to me why I associated SkyDrive with Sky and the reason for the patent infringement.

Um, off the top of my head:

  • Drive8
  • MyCloud
  • MetroCloud
  • MyDrive
  • Locker (really digging this, yo MS...grab that quick if it's available!)
  • Nimbus
  • Cabinet
  • MyCorner
  • Zone

I could see either XBOX Drive, Microsoft Drive, or Outlook Drive being possible choices. On another note, this is bs. Naming aside, they are fighting over the trademark for "sky". What next? Ground? Grass? Tree? Will i eventually be able to be sued if i were to sell a LAWN mower? Its absurd that they won. And its even more baffling that MS wont appeal (Unless, of course, they already planned on renaming it.)

EDIT: On second thought, it doesnt baffle me that they didnt appeal. This is Metro all over again (though unlike Metro, where the term got out of hand, and i was glad it changed, Skydrive has no reason to change.)

Well this is depressing a hell. I've come to love the name SkyDrive so much... This really blows. I'm still torn apart over Metro, now SkyDrive.

Bah. They're probably going to name it Windows Drive 8 or Windows 8 Drive. Microsoft loves to make their naming confusing. Still not a fan of WP8 name, nor am I a fan of being asked if I have Windows 8 on my phone.

"UDrive" as in Universal Drive because you can save documents, pictures, etc. And then twist it against Apple. "At Microsoft we are not selfish and conceded, its not just 'i. i. i.', we are about U".
There is also, "iUsers must be drunk...UDrive".

The sky, also known as the celestial dome, commonly refers to everything that lies a certain distance above the surface of Earth, including the atmosphere and the rest of outer space. Hence, anything above the ground is obviously protected under Sky trademark.
sky.fm is next? :'(
-skynet would be brilliant lol
- bskyb is the worst name ever. Whoever owns the trademark for letter "b" should sue them

Simple MSDrive.

BSkyB can go and do one, they monopolise everything in Europe. Unfortunately they got so big in the UK due to the football (soccer) lemmings paying stupid money each month.

Couldn't they just change the name for the UK only, and leave the name as SkyDrive for the sane parts of the world that have at least some sense of what trademark infringement really means?

Of all the names I've heard I think these are the best,
BInGBOX
OneDrive
XDrive
CloudX
You really have to use the names in a sentence to see if it works. It has to roll out your mouth as smooth as saying "bing it" or "google it" or "it's in my iCloud"
With that said, my top choice would be Xdrive but BingBox is really different. could work.

Any of the following sound alright?

DriveDrive
SurfDrive
OceanDrive
SurfaceStorage
Fluidsync
VantagePoint
DriveState
InsideDrive
OnsideDrive
AllsideDrive
EverysideDrive
LooseDrive
TightDrive
AuraDrive
ProximityDrive
ClosetDrive
RadialDrive
SurroundDrive
...or a variant of such?
Thoughts?

Sorry if this has already been asked, lots of comments here. Sam, are you implying that SkyDrive will be rebranded for all markets, or just UK?

I'm kind of young, which means I was just a kid when Bill Gates was the head of the company. But somehow I feel that this kind of things did not happen to MS, on the contrary the giant was trumping foes here and there. Now they have lost the 'Metro' name which was very apropriate and cool and now they are loosing another beacon in 'Skydrive'. I feel they are giving up easier than before, they prefer to settle disputes rather than give them a fair fight. Anyway, I hope they don't come back with some silly names like "modernUI" which sounds stupid and has an expiration date all over the name.

Fuck BSkyB .... You will rot in hell ... I love the name Skydrive ... It is way cooler name than GDrive or Dropbox or Box or any other shit

I'm late to the conversation but why not call it Microsoft Cloud or The Cloud or Cloud Drive. Thoughts?

I love the name Skydrive. It really implies the name of a cloud service. The desktop app is REALLY convenient.

These things are SO common though folks. Remember that a few years back, a little Linux start up company wanted to make a new user friendly OS for Linux, and called it "Lindows". Microsoft eventually took them to task for it, and they had to rename it to "Linscape". Then they got bought out by another company and ceased to exist anyway. Oh well.....

I kinda sympathize with this lawsuit... When I first read about SkyDrive, I actually thought it had something to do with Sky Broadcasting. I hope they come up with a better name. Doesn't have to mean anything, just sound good...

If I were MS, I would close SkyDrive in UK. Eat your courts BskyB.
Why there are always strange companies, trying to do stupid things?

Stupid lawsuit by Sky. Makes them look petty (it must be an infringement because our customers can't tell the difference)
Stupid interpretation of the law (can it really be an infringement of a Sky trademark if all Sky's other trademarks are Sky<space>something) and a dangerous precedent for UK trademark law
Stupid precedent - plenty of other companies have trademarks or names that start with Sky e.g. Skyteam, Skyway, Skyplane, Skymiles, Skymail, Skymove. And there is a company in the UK called Skydrive (and in the UK trademarks and company names are considered to be equivalent)
So why did Microsoft give in? Because it wasn't worth fighting over. Conclusion - they presumably have a better (by which I mean more integrated with the brand) name waiting in the wings.
I guess we just have to watch this space....

They will call this Microsoft SkyDrive in the UK and SkyDrive everywhere else. Stupid ruling but not the end of the world.

so is this part of a deal with Sky to get access to content for some sort of web tv system. Why make enemies with Sky who may be a major partner moving forward? Same as the Metro name issue, Im sure MS is happy to fight where it suits...

It's legally absurd...no company can claim rights over a word...
If Microsoft went along with this, it's because the name "SkyDrive" wasn't sticking that well.

I almost want to call it  ThingAboveOurHeadsWhenOutside-Drive just for the fun of mocking BSkyB.

As someone with a Law Dregree, I can tell you that they CAN'T. You can't trademark words of the dictionary. The only real base for this claim was if BSkyB had trademarked the name "SkyDrive".

since we are talking about cloud based storage, they should drop the drive and just name it after a cloud like Nimbus or Cumulus.

It's gonna be: Microsoft Cloud. Maybe Windows Cloud. That's all the poetry I can give you. Otherwise its gonna be some stupid name they change voluntarily after a few years, like Hotcloud or something. No, Microsoft Cloud, just that. Because that's what it is.
