Bing teams up with 500px - features 2.5 million photographers

Bing and 500px

If you’re a fan of Microsoft Bing’s image of the day, then you are about to get excited. The folks over in Redmond have teamed up with social photography sharing site 500px to “bring select photos from their site to the Bing experience.”

What does this mean exactly? We aren’t a hundred percent sure. It is obvious that Microsoft will now be using photographs from the site to enhance their own front page (and yes they give credit to the photographer). Whether they simply search for royalty free imagery or actually reach out to each individual photographer is up for debate.

You can see the first example of the experience on today’s Bing homepage. The beautiful photo taken is a shot from the top of Burj Khalifa in Dubai; it is currently the tallest man-made structure in the world. If you click to learn more about the photograph you do get a short profile about the photographer, Alisdair Miller.

Bing plans to feature over 2.5 million members of the 500px community thru “selected parts of the Bing.com experience.” Stay tuned and we will start to see exactly where these images pop up.

Are you on 500px (www.500px.com)? Right now might be the time for photographers to jump onboard.

Now if only this compels them to make an offiical app for either Windows 8 or Windows Phone. We've got some nice third party apps, but I want official.

glassadam says:

Surprised they didn't go with Flickr.

jlzimmerman says:

Yeah, especially since Flickr is a Yahoo! product, which using Bing search.

Yahoo is looking to move to Google after the current contract.

Im sure they reached out to the photographer. They contacted me about a picture I tweeted that I took with my 928. They used it in a newsletter. Got some nice WP swag.

Are you serious? I want to tweet them some of my photos. Have I to tweet to who to do that?

sumothong01 says:

I just tweeted @windowsphone with the photo and description.

Mocah says:

Gosh I wish they used Flickr.

Something being "up for debate" and you not knowing if something factually happens are not the same thing.

Great! All I hope is this means there will not be any ugly crabs on my homescreen anymore.

Lol I know what you mean =P

Josh Harman says:

Too bad my Bing lock screen was always a day behind the Bing search page.
They should fix this first.

pressstart says:

It's still a fresh new wallpaper on the phone each day :)

Josh Harman says:

Not new because I would see the current one everyday on the search page.

sholokov says:

If you have the "Amazing Weather" app, it updates the lock screen with the current Bing picture and of course the weather.

I saw this image earlier, and looked at all of his other ones. They're amazing! I really like 500px, glad I'm aware of it now.

fahdriyami says:

I want them to team up with National Geographic.

MrSimmix says:

"thru" Can you please spell it correct. I don't want to be a grammar Nazi but I really hate it when people spell it like that.

freshfelicio says:

If they could only make the bing background image scale to fit the screen on 1080p screens! At the moment there is an ugly grey bar. It looks perfect on 720p screens, but we live in 2013, event he Surface Pro has a 1080p screen. Image scaling isn't that hard to code.

StefEBear says:

Now they also need 500px to make some Windows 8/Phone8 Apps as well seeing as there are already ones for the other platforms.

Sunofabob says:

I have the app. I thought that photograph was beautiful. Great idea.
