Shortcut to Bing Vision makes it easier to scan QR codes again in Windows Phone 8.1

82

While the vast majority of changes to Windows Phone 8.1 have been a welcome gust of fresh air to our phones, there are some things that take getting used to. The fact that Cortana doesn’t have Bing Vision may be chalked up to it being in ‘beta’, although we hope Microsoft at some point brings the feature back to search. The Bing service is used by many people on this site for scanning our app QR codes at the end of articles, so not having it readily available is a turnoff.

Re-installing apps and games with Windows Phone 8.1 is now easier, here's how

145

The more we use Windows Phone 8.1 the more features we discover. Such as re-installing apps and games you’ve purchased in the past.

In the past there were basically two ways to re-install an app or game you had deleted from your Windows Phone. First, you could hunt down the app in the Store and re-install it. Second, you could pull up the Windows Phone Store’s website and go into your account to view your purchase history to find the app or game to re-install.

While those two options still exist, Windows Phone 8.1 now offers you a third option.

Nokia suspends European sales of Lumia 2520 due to charger shock risk

40

Nokia is temporarily halting sales of its Lumia 2520 tablet in several countries due to a risk of electric shock when using the chargers. An issue with the plastic exchangeable plug could cause the plug to come loose and separate on the European and U.K. version of the Lumia's AC-300 charger, which poses a risk of electric shock. Nokia notes that there haven't been any confirmed instances of shocks delivered by a faulty charger, but they're still urging consumers to stop using those chargers until Nokia is able to send a replacement.

In addition to the AC-300 wall charger, the travel charger for the Lumia 2520 that has been sold in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, U.K. and the United States. Sales of the Lumia 2520 have been suspended in all of these countries except the U.S., though sales of the travel charger have been halted. Shoot Em All, an urban combat game for Windows Phone

10

Shoot Em All is an arcade styled game for Windows Phone where you have to rescue your partner from the bad guys. The game is basically a sniper game that plays like a Hogan’s Alley game, except the targets shoot back.

You are tasked with seeking out the bad guys as they come out of hiding and take them out before they lock on to your position and ruin your day. Shoot Em All has a slight retro arcade feel to it, decent graphics and the need for a quick and steady aim.

Dear Cortana, do you love me?

Dear Cortana, do you love me?

Dear Cortana,

You’ve been sassy since we first met in 2001. I was only 13 then and you were busy controlling the defenses on the Pillar of Autumn as we emerged from slipspace near Installation 04. The Covenant was giving us a beat down after we barely escaped the glassing on the planet Reach. We’ve traveled the galaxy, saved it a few times and now you’re living in my pocket. Together we’ve spent the last few days getting reacquainted thanks to Windows Phone 8.1. You were sassy in 2001 and you’re still sassy today. I’ve put together a list of some of the questions I like to ask to get those sassy answers from you I love.

Do you like that Games are listed along with the Apps in Windows Phone 8.1?

569

If you’ve installed Windows Phone 8.1 Preview for Developers, or read about the same, you would’ve observed an interesting change to the apps list.

On a Windows Phone device, swiping to the right on Start screen brings up the apps list arranged alphabetically. The games though, are listed in the Games app. That, however, has changed with Windows Phone 8.1, and the games also appear in the apps list.

Here's how to make Windows 8.1 more like Windows 7 (in case you're weird like that)

111

Let us be honest, what people really want when they ask for Windows 7 back is that it be done with the modern Windows 8 Start Screen and make their machine more mouse and keyboard friendly.

Windows 8 has placed a large amount of its reliance on touch based PCs that is the Microsoft future. If you do find yourself without a touch screen and are yearning for the days of Windows 7, then read on as we bring you as close to the experience as we can.

Samsung ATIV SE for Verizon – Unboxing and tour of this sharp looking Windows Phone

302

Over the weekend, Samsung and Verizon launched the new ATIV SE sporting Windows Phone 8.0 with Update 3. We sort of forgot about this phone, since the 8.1 news became the main focus for us. But we decided to pick one up and give you a full on tour of the device.

As I mention in the video (which turned out longer than I had anticipated), the ATIV SE is a really sharp and elegant device. Sure, Samsung tends to give Windows Phone the cold shoulder, but even when they seem to be not trying they make compelling devices. The ATIV SE is no different and so far I’m quite impressed with it.

Let’s take a closer look

Can’t set an alarm with Cortana? You are not alone

391

Of course I’m guilty of almost abusing Cortana, the new personal digital assistant introduced in the Windows Phone 8.1. She’s managing my calendar, search queries, reminders, and lot of other things I’m discovering each time I fire the app.

While all is well between us, Cortana fails to set up alarms on my Windows Phone device. A little shout out around, and I realized I wasn’t alone. Lot of our readers have also reported the issue on Windows Phone Central Forums.
