Machinarium wakes up on Windows 8 and RT

30

Amanita Design’s classic point-and-click adventure game Machinarium arrived on Windows Phone last month. I was so impressed by its beautiful hand-drawn artwork and fascinating world of living robots that I named it one of the best games of March.

Shortly after the phone game popped up, we broke the news that Machinarium would be coming to Windows 8 and RT as well. We didn’t have to wait very long, because the game is now available on Windows tablets and PCs. Read on for Windows 8 impressions, plus news of another update for the Windows Phone game.

Get Ready For It: Smartwatch Fans is expanding... and rebranding!

158

When we Welcomed Smartwatch Fans to the Mobile Nations family on January 1st of this year, we told the story of how the site came to be. In reality, we actually started 2013 with the goal of building a community and resource with a broader focus, covering not only smartwatches, but also other wearables and the broader world of connected devices often referred to as the internet of things.

The problem was, we couldn't find a domain name and brand that we loved. With the months rushing by and 2013 coming to a close and the urge to get a new community launched just as strong, we decided to not delay and get things rocking with the more niche-focused Smartwatch Fans. It's been a busy four months on Smartwatch Fans, and things are about to get a whole lot busier and way more fun.

Tell Microsoft what music you’re missing on Xbox Music

320

When it comes to Microsoft’s Xbox Music, it’s certainly a work in progress. Setting up a globally competitive, all-in-one, music streaming and shopping service is certainly no small task. The service itself sports one of the largest collections of music, giving users the ability to stream or buy songs with one or two clicks. But what if your favorite band or album is not available?

Luckily, there’s an easy trick for telling Microsoft exactly what they are missing, giving them the ability to focus resources on getting that selection.

Microsoft Research shows off awesome interactive live tiles for Windows

212

Update: Microsoft has now pulled the page and videos

While there's a lot to love about live tiles in Windows and Windows Phone, there's one element that's been missing: interactivity. Sure, they'll refresh with your latest notifications, but all you can do is tap on them to open the respective app. Microsoft Research is aware of this limitation, and is working actively to supercharge live tiles with interactive elements.

Nokia is still caught up in a tax dispute in India, but the company has begun offering a voluntary retirement package to workers at a factory which was seized by a local tax office last year. The plant at Chennai has around 6,600 full-time employees, all of which are eligible for the retirement package. Every week we try to roundup a collection of top apps and games for our Windows Phones based on store ratings, overall popularity and your recommendations. After receiving a tip from WPCentral reader Juilian asking what are the best games for Windows Phone, instead of just listing the top rated games in the Windows Phone Store we decided to approach it from a different angle.

This week’s roundup is based on recommendations from our motley crew as to what the top Windows Phone games are. These titles are simply ones we have enjoyed playing and would gladly suggest them to others. With this roundup, we will highlight a small collection of our favorites and follow up with a supplemental list of even more gaming titles we think highly of.

While we have a healthy list of suggestions, if we have overlooked your top Windows Phone game, feel free to toss out your recommendations in the comments below.

Hands on with EyeLock myris, log in with your eyes

Tonight, we got a chance to see a demo of EyeLock myris, a USB-enabled iris identity authenticator. Iris authentication has been available to corporations and enterprises for years, but this product promises to be user-friendly or cost-effective enough for individuals to use in everyday situations. Instead of typing in usernames and passwords, place the EyeLock myris in front of your face to log in.

Head past the break to watch the demo.

Lok Sabha is a fun Windows Phone game as India heads to the polls

13

India is in the midst of General Elections 2014 as a billion people are voting for the next Government of the country. A new game on the Windows Phone Store arrived last week that attempts to serve as a funny ode to the diversity of the nation and the world’s largest democracy.

Lok Sabha is a funny spin-off about the political parties in India. In the game, two people play with their political ideologies placed head to head and compete each other for seats in the Parliament. Lok Sabha comes across as a fun, entertaining game for those who enjoy a little political satire.
