Nokia Smart Cam app released on the Windows Phone Store, but it won’t work on your Lumia yet

81

One of the big new features of the Lumia 925, which is now actually in people’s hands for purchase in the UK and a select few other territories, is the updated camera algorithms and new functionality. All of that is encompassed in the so-called ‘Amber update’, which is Nokia’s name for their inbound firmware change destined for all Windows Phone 8 Lumias later this summer.

One of those new features is the ability to run the Smart Cam app, which enables such cool camera tricks as motion blur, 10-frame action shots and more.

The good news is that app is now available in the Nokia Collection and yes, you can download it right now for your Lumia phone. The bad news is when launched, you’ll be greeted with a reminder that this app can’t quite run on your non-Lumia 925 just yet, because you don’t have that firmware update.

Why is it so hard to find great apps? - Talk Mobile

303

Between the iOS App Store, BlackBerry World, Google Play, and Windows Phone Store, there are more than 1.7 million apps available for smartphone and tablet users to choose from. The explosion in apps has been fueled by an explosion in users, who to date have downloaded well over 100 billion apps.

With so many apps to choose from, taking the virtual step into an app store presents a bewildering selection. Does it really matter how many apps a platform has in its store, or should we be worrying about which apps there are and how good they are?

How are we supposed to sort the good apps from the bad? Are reviews the answer, or can a managed store make a difference? Search might dig up something - if you know what you're looking for. Big name developers might offer some predictability, yet independent developers are often where you can find the innovation. Then again, big and small developers alike aren't immune from pumping out poor quality material.

So how do we sort through that to find the good apps, the best apps, the apps that really work for what you need?

Mystery Nokia phone shows up in Russian presentation but it's not a phablet

88

Oh how we hate Mondays (insert Garfield cartoon here). Looks like we may be spending more time than we want debunking rumors rather than posting confirmed news, but the internet is aflutter these days with numerous new Nokia speculation. Because an inbound 41MP Windows Phone just isn’t enough…

The latest rumor that just won’t go away use one of the most detested words we can think of: phablet. Typing it just makes us recoil for some unknown linguistic reason. Phablets are that new category of device that is combination of ‘phone’ and ‘tablet’, meaning devices with a 5” screen or bigger—give or take. It’s exemplified by popular devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note I and II, which ironically have beaten most analysts expectations by actually resonating very well with the public.

Three frightening games coming to Xbox One, starting with Dead Rising 3

52

E3 2013 kept us all very busy last week, and this week we still have a few more games to discuss with you. The Xbox One lineup looks like it will cater to fans of a variety of genres – not just first-person shooters. Horror games should be especially well represented. The console launches with Dead Rising 3, an exclusive title from Capcom and Microsoft. The previous series entries all appeared on Xbox 360, with a port of the first game showing up on the Wii and both 2 and Off the Record gracing the Playstation 3 as well.

Shortly after launch we should also see D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die from Hidetaka Suehiro (creator of Deadly Premonition) and Microsoft.  D4 will be a thriller/mystery released via downloadable episodes. And in 2014, Japanese developer Tango Gameworks will team up with publishing giant Bethesda to release a pure horror game The Evil Within at retail.

Ting getting the HTC Tiara and mysterious Samsung device "mid to late" July

53

Ting is a wireless service provider here in the United States. Ting doesn’t subsidize the cost of smartphones and does that in order to avoid contracts for consumers. They operate their services via Sprint’s CDMA 3G, 4G, WiMAX and 4G LTE network. It looks like Ting is getting ready to jump on the Windows phone bandwagon according to a recent blog post and in doing so outs the HTC “Tiara” and another Samsung device. We last heard from Ting about a month ago where they reassured their support of Windows Phone.
