MTV News brings music news to WP7

Keeping suit with the news app releases, MTV News has entered the mix bringing you all the pop culture news to your Windows Phone. Now I haven't followed MTV since the days they actually play music videos and Martha Quinn was a VJ. MTV News was a fifteen second plug that appeared at the top and bottom of the hours in between videos.

Now you can keep up to date with all the news on music, movies, television, celebrities and gaming while on the go. A Hollywood Reporter of sorts for the younger crowd. Features of the MTV News app include:

  • Exclusive Videos, updated throughout the day from everywhere MTV News has access
  • Articles by categories. Customize with My News to get just the stories on the celebs you care about
  • MTV News, Shows, Music, Movies, and Gaming Blogs
  • Exclusive celeb Photos from MTV events and beyond

MTV News also has live tile support and push notifications.  MTV News is a free, ad-supported app that you can download here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

WP7 emulator N9 skin

WP7 emulator N9 skin

Oh, now this is rather lovely. Fancy jazzing up the Windows Phone 7 emulator with some Nokia N9 goodness? Of course you do! You can now with a skin designed by tezawaly, which when implemented provides the user with a choice of three colors (as shown above).

It seems every time I see more images of the proposed Sea Ray device, I look at my current device (Omnia 7) and want Nokia to come to arms ASAP. You can find out more information and download the skin by using the link below. Did we mention it looks great in landscape too?

FoodSpotting app hits Marketplace

The official WP7 app for FoodSpotting has made its way to the Marketplace.  Just like the site itself, the new app helps users find nearby restaurants and review them, right down to the individual tasty tidbit.  Take photos of your favorite dish, upload it, and share it with others.  You can search by map or genre and even bookmark foods you want to try.  And all of this can be shared with other FoodSpotting users.

You can get it here.

NBC Nightly News enters the Marketplace

5

You've got USA Today, BBC News, AP News (recently updated) and other news apps over at the Windows Phone Marketplace. Now you can add NBC Nightly News to your news app line up.

Taking full advantage of the metro design, NBC Nightly News lays all the daily news items across a five page hub. The app does feature Brian Williams a lot but also brings you news videos, full broadcasts of the news show, and categorized stories ranging from politics to weather.

There is also a Facebook tie in that allows you to share stories on your Facebook wall. NBC Nightly News is a free app and you can find it here (opens Zune) at the Marketplace.

Thanks goes out to Amir for the tip!

Android is Nokia's backup plan? [Rumor]

Android is Nokia's backup plan? [Rumor]

According to a report over at the Fone Arena, Nokia have undergone some experiments in the Android field as well as Windows Phone 7, which is expected when they were deciding on a different OS to focus on since Symbian was a losing cause.

Our dear friend Eldar Murtazin has remained adamant that we can look forward to some Android devices in 2012 should the WP7 partnership with Microsoft fall through. I don't believe Nokia should have any problems with selling any devices should they stick to their incredible N9 design approach and engage in some effective marketing. Let's just see what happens when Sea Ray hits the shelves before anything else.

High res Nokia Sea Ray mockups based off of N9 show potential

11

We've seen the video a few times already today, but in case you wanted a better idea of what the 'Sea Ray' will look like in some professional shots, here's your chance.

Taken from the official Nokia N9 shots, Downright Wireless has re-imagined the device with familiar WP7 start screen (and extra camera button). In addition to the black, we can see the alternate colors would bring to the table as well. That baby blue? Not too shabby of a choice, that's for sure.

Head to Downright Wireless for a few more shots of their excellent work.

Creepy transparent spider wallpaper is creepy

Creepy transparent spider wallpaper is creepy

We don't have arachnophobia per se, more or less just an aversion. But that's us. For all we know, you're a bunch of tarantula fiends who yearn desperately to have one big spider prominently displayed on your pretty little Windows Phone.

Well, tonight's your night as Downright Wireless has taken the Samsung Infuse 4G's spider (see commercial here for reference) and transplanted him to Windows Phone, ala transparent wallpaper for maximum effect. Like we said, it's not our thing, but darn it all...creepy or not, it is pretty awesome looking.

Grab the wallpaper and matching Tiles for your device right here with instructions.

Video tour of Microsoft Houston store opening

14

Though we don't have too many of these Microsoft stores, they are starting to roll out across a few malls in the U.S. and we say, bring it on. As an obvious attempt to jump on the popularity of Apple's stores, which are notoriously busy, it's still nice to see Microsoft try to compete with them and even the playing field.

The Houston store looks nice enough and more natural than than the all white, antiseptic feel of Apple's stores (and we seem to be lacking the all to pretentious 'Genius Bar', thankfully). Personally, we can't wait till Microsoft brings one of these to New York City, hopefully in a grand way.

Video by Greg McClendon Jr.; thanks for the tip

Windows Phone Word Game Round-up

Windows Phone Word Game Round-up

To many, word games on your Windows Phone are a great way to pass the time with. These games can be challenging and mentally stimulating. Heck, you might even learn a few new words from some of these games.

You can compete against yourself, time, the phone or other gamers that are a bazillion miles away. You can find words, create words, and complete words.

Personally, I like the word games that developers have brought to the Windows Phone table and thought it was time to round up a collection. We'll break them down into three categories; Scrabble types, Word Search types, and Hangman types.

To see a list of our favorites from each, ease on past the break.

Image of Nokia's 'Sea Ray' reveals virtual buttons? We're not so sure.

34

Curious thing: during the leaked video of the Nokia's 'Sea Ray' Windows Phone, we actually never see the three-buttons for Back, Win and Bing Search. This lead to the natural speculation that there would be capacitive buttons, like other Windows Phones.

A new image has come forth though of the device and it shows, in fact, that there may be 'virtual buttons' meaning they are on the screen. But instead of taking up the 800x480 real-estate, they are probably using an 854x480 screen, much like the N9 that this so closely resembles.

A few words of caution though:

  1. Our own Richard Edmonds questions its authenticity--there's no glare on the button area, though there is a glare above and below them (see image below)
  2. Those buttons look like the WP7 emulator's, big time. Very suspicious.
  3. It certainly looks "off" plus it's probably just a mock up someone made
  4. Assuming it's true, this is far from finalized hardware and 'prototype' needs to be used here
  5. Nokia still has a lot of time to change or modify the design

At this point, we're not confident that this is legit, or if it is real, not final. Either way, we're not crazy about the sharp corners of 'Sea Ray'. There's a reason why the Focus feels so nice in the hand (and even the LG Quantum) and it has to do with the smoothness of the design.

If these virtual buttons are here to stay, it's not too much different than capacitive buttons, but we're not crazy about the idea. Finally, this looks more like the 'Sea Ray' is just a modified N9 rather than a "ground up" Nokia Windows Phone, making it slightly less interesting, in our opinion.

Update: Reader swc_ant has a nice comment based off his experience working on phone hardware. We agree with his assesment that it's a sticker/tape serving as a place holder.

Microsoft details Mango changes to Games Hub [Video]

9

Though you can watch our video tour above of the new Games Hub in Windows Phone "Mango" (see review), you'll want to read all the changes cataloged by Microsoft themselves. From the Windows Phone Blog, you can tell, once again, that Microsoft is listening to consumers by incorporating a lot of changes. Indeed, the Games Hub feel more unified with the whole Xbox ecosystem and the changes are most welcomed.

Here's what's new:

  • Improved Collection View - basically smaller icons for games with a list view, makes it easier to navigate
  • New 3D Avatars with attitude - With XNA/Silverlight in a single app, your 3D Avatar is now "built in" with more functionality and movement
  • Improved Xbox LIVE messaging - Word suggest/complete is now built in, you can communicate with other Xbox  LIVE members on PC, phones or console. "If a message contains certain emoticons (e.g. Smile, Sad smile), you’ll notice your avatar’s expression change to reflect that emotion! (If a sender overloads a message with conflicting emoticons, your avatar will look bewildered."
  • Connect with Xbox LIVE friends
  • Integrated achievements and new comparison views
  • Edit your profile
  • Improved Spotlight content
  • Improved game request notifications: In Mango, you’ll receive notifications for multiplayer game or turn requests and can track them in the Requests section of the Games Hub.

Some of those last few ones are just carry overs from Xbox LIVE Extras, which is now purely for the Avatar Marketplace and to design your Avatar. Overall, a solid list of changes to look forward too.

Telefonica receiving updates, Orange scheduling. NoDo rollout is completed.

3

All updates are now heading to Telefonica customers, this includes both NoDo and the recent security update. Orange UK Omnia 7 devices are scheduling and updates should begin rolling out again soon. I would write that there's still no news regarding Focus handsets but I don't think any of you expected anything new on that front. Keep an eye on the Mcirosoft updates page to see the status of your carrier/device.

Oh and we should mention that this finally actually completes the NoDo update for all (save a few Focus owners, of course). So while it took three months to complete the full roll out for every device, it's still faster than Android, relatively speaking. Having said that, let us hope for a faster turn around with "Mango".

Twin Blades returns, kind of, and now features 'green blood' [Update: Zune link!]

6

The saga of the Xbox LIVE game 'Twin Blades' is interesting. What was a great, albeit a bit boring, side scrolling, zombie slaughter-fest had been pulled months ago from the Marketplace. Reason? Due to not having a rating system in the Marketplace and the game was deemed too gory (it does have blood splatter the screen on occasion--but they're zombies, for cryin' out loud).

Two things we were expecting: in "Mango" a gaming rating system should be in place, allowing for this content and/or 'Twin Blades' gets fixed i.e. the violence is toned down. As of now, it looks like the latter is the case as we're getting numerous reports that the zombies now have green blood, which obviously tricks your brain into know that these are now aliens, not human zombies, right?

Surprisingly, it's still not available in the Marketplace to buy/re-download, though we're expecting that to happen at some point (we lost our copy months ago after a hard-reset). Only those who still have the game can update to the new v1.0.0.9. Sigh.

Update: Image and link pulled per request.

Thanks, AtomicAgeZombie and Siegerstyle, for the heads up
