Sprint Touch Diamond gets a ROM update

5

Looks like HTC snuck out a ROM update for the Sprint variant of the Touch Diamond. Here's what's fixed in this "Maintenance Release":

  • Provides enhancements to the HTC dialer application
  • Resolves an issue where the “Internal Storage” drive may not be recognized by the device
  • Includes minor enhancements for Sprint TV and Opera Browser
  • Resolves an issue with time not updating correctly after daylight savings time adjustment
  • Includes a variety of minor bug fixes

Applying the update will bump you up to Version 2.00.651.7. As always, be sure to read through all the instructions (pdf link), and above all, back up your important data first!

Ask WME: How to clear company directory history

4

A couple of weeks ago, WMExperts podcast listener Mark (Hi, Mark!) asked Dieter and Mal if there was a way to clear out the search history from the company directory (Exchange) side of Outlook Mobile. We scratched our heads for a while and then went to the source. Here's what the Outlook Mobile team came up with:

  1. From the file explorer, navigate to Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
  2. Delete “GalSeachHistory.dat”

There you go. Easy as pie. Once again it proves it's not what you know, but who you know. :)

And if you have a question for Dieter and Malatesta, shoot an e-mail to podcast at wmexperts dot com.

Skyfire sets sights on our CrackBerry cousins

0

Having become pretty popular with Windows Mobile, the Skyfire browser apparently is  making its way over to our BlackBerry cousins. According to an e-mail snagged by the Boy Genuis Report, a search is on for Alpha testers.

We are looking for early Alpha testers to help us develop Skyfire for BlackBerry. If you like to be the first on the block, and on the bleeding edge (bugs!), please sign up and give us a steady stream of feedback so together we can make browsing on the BlackBerry the best it can be.

You can bet CrackBerry users will be lined up down the street for this one. Because if there's one thing that platform needs to improve on, it's the browsing experience. (Yes, we really just said that. Hey, browsing's been getting better on Windows Mobile in leaps and bounds lately.)

Taiwan getting Touch Diamond 2 this month

0

As we in the United States patiently (or not so much) await the arrival of the HTC Touch Diamond 2, another overseas launch reportedly is drawing near. MobileTechReview says that the TD2 will be released in Taiwan "Later this month" for about $650 U.S. We've previously reported that European dealer Expansys plans to start selling on April 19, and T-Mobile Germany will get in the game in June.

We're still hoping for a U.S. release sooner rather than later. But in the meantime, you can check out Dieter's hands-on with the Touch Diamond 2 at Mobile World Congress.

Unofficial ROM unlocks Omnia GPS

10

A new "unofficial" ROM for the Samsung Omnia has made its way into wild at MoDaCo [via BGR], promising to unlock some sought-after features. Currently available in the U.S. from Verizon Wireless, the Omnia's GPS chip has been locked down, much to the chagrin of, well, everyone. Out of the box, you're forced to use VZ Navigator for all of your GPS needs. But using this ROM, update you should be able to use free third-party apps like Google Maps and Live Search.

Other changes in addition to the GPS unlock are:
  •  5 percent battery increments
  • Ability to disable threaded text messaging via system settings
  • Pop-up keyboard keys a la iPhone
  • Auto-lock keypad settings now include Off, 2s and 5s
  • Opera Mobile 9.5 build 15679
  • Weather Bug and Windows Live Widgets
  • Favorite settings, now known as easy settings
  • Windows Live

If you are brave, let us know how it works after the update. But by all means, back up your data first, and read through the thread at MoDaCo. This is unofficial stuff, so be careful.

And while this unofficial fix is nice, we're still waiting for that official, open GPS unlock that Verizon said was coming. How 'bout it, guys? (fwiw: A BGR commenter says official GPS unlocks are coming May 11.)

HTC Cedar makes return trip to FCC

0

We don't pretend to make heads or tails of most FCC filings, with all the electronic testing hullabaloo and acronym mumbo jumbo, and this is no exception. We've already seen the HTC "Cedar" make its way through the feds under the CEDA200 codename. But Engadget has spied a CEDA100 at our favorite federal agency and notes that it's not at all uncommon for HTC to do this and that it could signal versions coming to Sprint and Verizon.
