From the forums: New phones, new conversations

0

That's right, folks, we've kicked the dust off the forums. We've got threads for the plethora of upcoming phones. Windows Marketplace for Mobile has its own niche. Windows Mobile 6.5  (and eventually Windows Mobile 7) are highlighted.

And if you missed it last week, the forums were central in giving away a Jabra BT530 headset, and we'll be giving more Windows Mobile accessories away real soon.

Head on over and register if you haven't already, join the conversation, and get ready for some more giveaways.

Handmark has an app store, too

Handmark has an app store, too

Last week, we tested a beta version of Handmark's "soon to be released" HandMarket Apps for Windows Mobile.  The Beta release of Handmark's App Store was mapped out for only a handful of devices including the HTC Touch Pro, Touch Diamond, and  Treo Pro with the final version available for most Windows Mobile Pro and Standard phones.

Handmark at the last minute added the AT&T Fuze to the list and after a few tweaks and email exchanges the AT&T Fuze was mapped and we were able to take the Handmarket Apps out for a test drive.  Follow the break to see what type of impression the Handmark application store left as well as some screen shots.

Something new brewing in WinMo 6.5?

14

Whoa. Now we realize this is only the typical settings screen for a build of Windows Mobile 6.5, but there are a couple of things from the Windows Mobile Junkies blog [via and via] that have our interest piqued here: The first is the obvious finger-friendly changes. The tabs at the bottom have given way to buttons toward the top. It's about time.

The second is the build itself, and overall difference we're seeing. For the most part, Windows Mobile 6.5 has appeared to be a reskinning of 6.x. Sure, the Today Screen and the start menu have been changed. But after that, you get dumped back into typical Windows Mobile pretty quickly.

But this build is definitely starting to feel different. There are a few more pictures after the jump. And while builds of Windows Mobile 6.5 are a dime a dozen at this point, and we still have a few more months to go before WinMo 6.5 is released, this is a step in the right direction. Not a huge leap, but a step. And so, we'll posit the following:

  1. This could be the direction Windows Mobile 6.5 is going and could be what we all end up with this fall.
  2. This is just some random build that was played with but won't be released.
  3. Just yet another reskinning, a la TouchFLO 3D?
  4. This could be Windows Mobile 7. (I don't actually think that's the case, but we'll throw it out there anyway.)
  5. Perhaps there's an interim version being prepared between Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Mobile 7? This is a fairly big departure from everything we've seen so far.

Discuss.

Verizon may pick up Treo 800w - in 2010

7

Now take this with a big ol' grain of salt, but Verizon reportedly may get the latest and greatest er the second-most recently launched um the Palm Treo 800w ... wait for it ... in February 2010.

That's according to a PhoneArena tipster called "SnapDude," and even PA admits that this is far from official. Now don't get us wrong, the Treo 800w was a favorite around here for a while. But Palm has followed it with the Windows Mobile-powered Treo Pro and, of course, the Pre. Heck, we were talking nearly a year ago about Verizon bringing the 800w and still haven't seen it.

On the other hand, we can't help but chuckle when thinking about Verizon blabbing just days before the Palm Pre launched on Sprint that it would be getting the Pre. And then to not get the 800w out the door until February 2010? Well, karma's a fickle mother sometimes.

The other WinMo phone release rumored in the PA post is the Samsung Omnia II. We know Verizon and Sammy play well together, but is it realistic to think that the Omnia II could be released by Christmas? We'll see.

Verizon Quietly EOLs Treo 700wx; Treo 800w Release Oct. 12th?

4

Thanks to some eagle-eyed (and tenacious!) forum members, it looks like Verizon has slapped a big ol' "While Supplies Last!" badge on the venerable Palm Treo 700wx (as if the exclamation mark is really necessary).

Usually that's a good sign that the device's run is coming to a quiet end.

Coincidentally, forum member Scott who has been relentlessly hounding Verizon on the status of the Treo 800w, has nailed those guys down to a specific date for release: October 12th.

(see our earlier coverage here)

Sometimes, the stars just align perfectly and everything comes together. Stay tuned...

The T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 parade continues

9

So remember how we said we wouldn't be posting any more T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 leaks until, well, the next one? Here it is, and it's worthy. Nothing much more to say except peep the rest of the pics from XDA Developers member lakers8833 after the jump. And because you're going to ask: No, we don't have an official release date, but Aug. 12 is still the one floating around.

Rumors of the HTC Leo - a clamshell phone

4

When we first heard about the HTC Manila 2.5 build a month or so ago, another whisper in our ear was about an HTC device called the Leo. We hadn't said much because, frankly, we didn't know what the heck it was.

Now comes some more possible deets on the Leo courtesy of wmpoweruser. It may well be a clamshell device (talk about old-school) with a 16:9 aspect ration WVGA screen — and an external QVGA screen. Under the hood is rumored to be a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and Open GL 2.0 for graphics.

And speaking of old school and as wmpu notes, this might be the long-awaited HTC Omni, seen above, finally coming to fruition a good two years after it was first rumored. Time will tell.

Motorola Q9h gets a ROM update

Motorola Q9h gets a ROM update

There's an update available for the Motorola Q9h on AT&T. But before you get all hot and bothered, here's what we know:

  • No, it's not Windows Mobile 6.5.
  • No, it doesn't appear to enable some secret WiFi capability.
  • No, Windows Marketplace for Mobile is nowhere to be found.

Maybe it finally opens the Q9h to those over-the-air updates we learned about nearly a year ago. (We're not holding our breath, though.)

About the only thing we can tell is that the radio (as in the thing that connects it to cell towers) appears to have been updated. If you go to Settings>About, our radio version has gone from MODEM4_U_40.11.40R_04 to MODEM4_U_40.11.40R_07.

Also, under Settings>Phone information>APFlex, we've gone from NONORMANATTCORE00040 to NONORMANATTCORE00043. And in the same location, AP has gone from 01.09.28R to 01.09.28DR.

So, if you're not having any problems making calls and getting data, you might what to leave well enough alone. This is a ROM update, after all, and that means you'll be wiping your phone clean. (Is it weird that we did so without thinking twice, at 10 p.m. on a Friday night? Nahhhhh.)

If you're the type who lives on the bleeding edge, hit up the Motorola update tool (get it here if you don't currently have it), and flash away. And if anyone knows anything else that's changed, hit us up in the comments.

Via Everything WM. And thanks, Mike, for the e-mail tip!

More on the Touch Pro 2 with a 3.5mm jack

6

Here's more from Mobilesyrup on the upcoming Touch Pro 2 with its confirmed 3.5mm headset jack that caught most everyone by surprise. And that leads us to a couple of questions.

  1. What's the trade-off? While there appears to be plenty of room on the bottom edge of the Touch Pro 2 for a headset jack, adding one certainly must change the internal design of the device. (That's Dieter's hands-on with the stock Touch Pro 2 at right.) And while the Telus version proves that it can be done, was anything taken out?
  2. Telus is the first carrier we've seen to add in a headset jack. Will anyone else follow? It's not a given that Verizon or anyone else will do so. (And if anyone out there can predict exactly how Verizon hack up any given phone, we've got a date at the track we'd like to take you on.) Again, that'd likely come down to the trade-offs.
  3. Is this HTC turning over a new leaf sooner than we thought? They've said headsets will come in future phones. Yeah, it's probably too soon for that, but who knows.

Regardless, we're not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Congrats, Telus customers. And let's hope some of that headset goodness comes our way.
