Weekly Software Wrangle - Week 14

Whew! We got past Wrangle #13 without any really bad luck, and now we're full steam ahead on Weekly Software Wrangle #14! What's new? What's updated? What freebies are out there for the taking?

This week, WM Standard new software is Nine Way Keypad and Four Corners. Updated software includes 1Touch Contacts and Spb Wallet Smartphone. The free app this week is Tiny Twitter.

WM Professional new software are two titles from Efficasoft: Backup and Outliner. Updated software includes Spb Mobile Shell and IM+ All-in-One Messenger. Freeware is GSlide.

Strap on your six-shooter, tilt your 10-gallon hat to shade your eyes, and let's get started with this week's Wrangle.

WM Standard: New

First up this week for a WM Standard app is Nine Way Keypad v2.3 Cyberhorse Workshop.

Personally, I'm a full QWERTY keyboard guy, but I know there are lots of folks out there who are very proficient with a standard keypad. To gain even more control and proficiency with your keypad, this is worth a look.

It is a Smartphone common flaw that the five-way navigation keypad is too small to operate. Therefore, Nine Way Keypad software has provided one kind of solution: the user can switch the function of keyboard between characters and navigation. Moreover, under navigation function status, there are additional editing functions: Select text, Copy text, Paste text and switch between another editing keys (Page Up, Page Down, Home, End) and additional directions (Left Up, Right Up, Left Down, Right Down).

Get Nine Way Keypad v2.3 for $9.99 here.

The next new WM Standard app is Four Corners v1.0 by Shane Church.

Four Corners is the classic game of "Four Seasons," "Corner Card," or "Vanishing Cross" for WM. The foundations are the four corners of the board. The tableau is the cross formed in the center of the board. The stock is the pile on the bottom left and the wastepile is the pile to the right of the stock. The game is dealt by placing five cards into the tableau, one in each pile. A sixth card is placed in the bottom left foundation. All remaining cards are placed in the stock.

The first foundation card forms the basis of all the other foundations. That is, the rank of the first foundation card is the starting rank of the other foundations. Each foundation is built up in suit until it contains thirteen cards, wrapping around from king to ace as necessary. The tableau cards are available for play at any time, and may be moved (one card at a time) to the foundations or to another tableau pile. The tableau piles may be built down in rank, regardless of suit.

The cards in the stock are available for play to the foundations, the tableau, or to the wastepile. The wastepile is used as a sort of temporary holding area for cards that have no other home. The top card of the wastepile may be moved to either the foundations or tableau.

The object of the game is to complete the four foundations.

Get Four Corners v1.0 for $6.00 here.

WM Standard: Updated

1Touch Contacts v4.0 by 1TouchMobile, is our first updated software for WM Standard this week.

1Touch Contacts has been designed to give the user easy and efficient ways to accomplish frequently used tasks and to provide new features that will make managing contacts a more enjoyable experience. It uses the same contacts database as the built-in contacts and can be syncronized with Outlook using ActiveSync. Version 4.0 includes a full-fledged Category Manager with the ability to create, edit, remove & rename Categories as well as Send SMS and Set a Ringtone for a Category.

Users can now manage their contact groups using a Group Manager. Sending SMS to multiple users can be accomplished with 1Touch Contacts. Business cards (vCard) can be transferred using bluetooth just like the built-in contacts, the only difference being - you can transfer multiple business cards in one operation. Selecting contacts for sending SMS or business card or for deleting contacts is done using a smart selection list. 1Touch Contacts allows deleting of multiple contacts from a single selection list.

Pandora Coming to Windows Mobile ...Eventually

I love me some Pandora -- it's an online music service that allows you to create virtual 'stations' based on your favorite artist or song, then allows you to refine that station by rating music up and down. They've created a wildly popular client for the iPhone, but Windows Mobile is still waiting. The good news: Pandora is working on a mobile client for their music service for Windows Mobile. The bad news: we could have written that exact sentence over two years ago, as this timeline at wmpoweruser makes clear.

It's not hopeless, though, as the CTO at Pandora, Tom Conrad, responded to the above with a well-written letter:

The good news is that we do have a team working on Windows Mobile versions of Pandora. Given my track record it’s probably best not to comment on the “when” but it’s certainly not a question of “if”.
At least for a small company like Pandora, the incredibly diverse mobile universe creates a real challenge with respect to where to place your limited resources. Without question the iPhone turned out to be a great bet for us. So far, the investment in feature phones has been a more modest success. We’re all optimistic that we’ll be able to find a iPhone-like success on Windows Mobile, but only time will tell.

In the meantime, there's always Last.FM.

GSmart t600 - digital TV on a WinMo device

GSmart t600 - digital TV on a WinMo device

And now for something completely different ... (Or at least not the Treo Pro)

Dieter got a quick look at the GSmart t600 back at CTIA, and now we're getting an in-depth review of the Gigabyte device, thanks to the folks at PhoneArena.

While it's hardly a looker by today's standards - and it almost appears to be begging for a lawsuit as an iPod lookalike - the T600 has one thing going for it that no one else does - the ability to watch digital television over the air.

What else do you get?

  • 520 MHz Intel XScale processor
  • 256 megs ROM/64 megs RAM
  • 480x640 display
  • Windows Mobile 6.1 pro
  • WiFi
  • 2-MP camera with flash

And that's really about it. No 3G bands. Other than the antenna and TV capability, nothing to write hope about.

Also, Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial isn't even available in the United States, Canada, or anywhere in North or South America, for that matter, so we wouldn't recommend losing too much sleep over this one yet.

AT&T Tilt 6.1 ROM Update Imminent?

Get your browsers set to "refresh" as it looks like HTC is slowly getting ready to release the WM 6.1 update for the AT&T Tilt.

How we knows? If you go to the newly revamped HTC update site, you'll find a heap load of contradictory information, that's how. (See AT&T's own discussion forum for the frenzy)

First on the main page you'll see the ROM 1.62.502.0 from February but with the date of 2008-08-06.

Click to the download page though and you'll find this:

AT&T Tilt Windows Mobile 6.1 Software (ROM Version 3.57.502.2 WWE) This ROM update is intended for the AT&T Tilt only and users should not load or attempt to load this version on any other device as it may cause serious issues/damage.

Features:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1
  • HTC Home
  • Video Share Calling
  • Threaded SMS
  • MS Voice Command
  • OneNote Mobile
  • Remote Desktop Monitor
  • Enroll Domain
  • Managed Programs
  • PTT Button now available for reassignment under Start>Settings>Buttons

Not too shabby, eh? Too bad when you click for the download you still get the old ROM version (we repeat: it is still the OLD rom) :-(

Hopefully it won't be too much longer for you folks!

Thanks Atul!

Motorola Q9h 6.1 Update Officially Available

Mike, who'd previously let us know about that leaked out 6.1 update has been watching Motorola's site like a ravenous hawk hovering over a field mouse. That mouse has finally popped out of its hole: head on over to Motorola's site for the official Motorola Q9h 6.1 Update.

You're going to need the standard complement of update tools before you get going: Windows XP or Vista, internet connectivity (the software just might be calling home to check to see if your Q9h is legit), and a full backup before you update. Like all ROM updates, this one will wipe your device, so get prepared.

Welcome to the sliding panel glory of Windows Mobile 6.1 on the Q9h everybody. I've been in here for awhile, and let me tell you: jump on in, the water's fine.

Download the installer directly here. Thanks, Mike!

Sprint Diamond Spotted -- in Red!

Over at Sprint Users, r0fl has scored some promotional images of the Sprint Diamond. As we suspected, it does have the same flat back as the Telus Diamond, but it looks a whole lot sexier in red. Specs and whatnot are still expected to match that Telus version as well:

  • 101mm x 51mm x 14mm
  • EVDO Rev A
  • WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
  • 640 x 480 Touchscreen
  • Qualcomm MSM 7510A Processor running at 528MHz
  • 256 ROM, 256 RAM, 4 Gigs internal (no expansion)
  • Opera 9.5 for the broswer
  • 3.2 megapixel cameral
  • 1340 mAh battery

...Seems like a safe bet this will be the first Diamond to hit the US, hopefully soon! Thanks to BubbaTex for the tip!

Even more Treo Pro (850w) Shots...

Man, this is getting crazy now.

Here are a few dozen more, super high rez pics of the seemingly popular Treo Pro.

Every angle is covered we think:

  • Stylus
  • Bundled Headphones
  • Battery size and comparison to Treo 650
  • Qualcomm 7201 chipset

Is anything missing? See more in our forum and Treo8.com.

Thanks navyyang. Few more after the jump!
