Omnia ROM update live! (for real this time)

41

So after a bit of a false start yesterday, the ROM update that will unlock the GPS on the Verizon Samsung Omnia is finally live. Head on over and get it, and let us know in the comments how it works. (And if any of you brave Windows 7 users want to try out the Vista version of the update tool and let us know how it works, that would be cool, too.)

Thanks again, cplush!

Another sign of Touch Pro 2 on Sprint

Another sign of Touch Pro 2 on Sprint

Deep inside Sprint stores, according to ppcgeeks user pslim, is a tool called Cellebrite that will transfer pics, contacts and the like from one type of phone to another. And on that tool has appeared the Touch Pro 2, which is showing up as the HTC 6975. See above.

Of course, that does absolutely nothing to point to when the Touch Pro 2 will finally see the light of day on Sprint (or any other U.S. carrier, for that matter). It is, however, yet another stop on the long and winding road that is the launch of HTC's latest and greatest. (And don't worry, folks, we'll get to do this all over again for the Touch Diamond 2, most likely.)

A look at the Telus Touch Pro 2

We'd heard rumors a while back that the Touch Pro 2 would be coming to Canada's Telus network, and those rumors solidified in the past couple of weeks. Now, here's a look at the upcoming release, courtesy of Mobilesyrup.

So whatcha think, folks? Out of all of the versions of the Touch Pro 2 that we've seen either in the flesh or rumored — Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, the AT&T renders and the stock European version — which one is looking the best, aesthetically?

Touch Pro 2 and Nokia N97 do epic battle

14

We've been watching with great interest the Nokia N97 (be sure to check out all of Nokia Experts' excellent coverage, as well as Matthew Miller's review of the N97), as it's one of the closest competitors to the HTC Touch Pro 2. And while we're still waiting on the Touch Pro 2 to be released in the U.S., it's available outside North America.

So here, now, is a 10-minute battle royale from TeknoReview between the non-U.S. Touch Pro 2 and the Nokia N97, just to whet your appetite for our own Smartphone Round Robin in the coming months.

LG GW600 appears at the FCC

We're expecting to see a slew of Windows Mobile phones from LG in the coming months, and here comes one now. The LG GW600 has made its way through the Federal Communications Commission and appears bound for AT&T. The known specs:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.
  • EDGE/3G with the 850MHZ and 1900MHz bands.
  • 3.1MP camera.
  • Proximity sensor/light sensor.
  • 20key SureType-style keypad.
  • Micro-SD card.
  • WiFi.
  • Bluetooth.

And we'll assume all of the usual accoutrements that come with. Also noted in the product manual is Video Share, which is what points the way toward AT&T. Flick-gesture controls are also mentioned. More photos after the break.

Review: SPE Snap-on and Click for the Samsung Jack

The Samsung Jack is still relatively new and slowly but surely, case options are showing up. We've taken a look at the Samsung Horizontal Case for the Jack and now we'll turn our sites on two Smartphone Experts shell-styled cases, the Snap-on and the Click. These two cases are hard shells with one sliding on to your Samsung Jack for protection and the other a two piece hard shell that encases the Jack.

Follow the break to see what type of impression these two hard shell cases left with us.

Free stuff: Win a Jabra BT530 headset

Last week's Motorola H12 Bluetooth headset giveaway was a glowing success. So much so we decided to do it again this week by giving away a Jabra BT530 Bluetooth Headset. We reviewed the BT530 some time ago, and now you get a chance to win it.

So here's how it will work this time: Register and post a comment in our Forums. We've got discussions going on most of the existing and future Windows Mobile phones as well as discussions on software issues, accessories and everything else Windows Mobile. And you're gonna have to write more than just "I like Bluetooth!"

We will randomly choose one post through Sunday, and that'll be our winner. Keep in mind that you have to be registered to post in the forums. It's a painless process that can be found here.

Once the winner is chosen, we'll shoot them a note, post a victory notice on the site for bragging rights and send them their prize (sorry, no international shipping). Get to it!

Samsung Omnia ROM update is (nearly) live; GPS finally is unlocked

17

We're gonna pat ourselves on the back here a little bit and pretend that it was our open letter and persistent persistence that finally got Verizon to open up the GPS on the HTC Touch Pro and Samsung Saga – and, finally, the Samsung Omnia.

Note that the update page is up, but the download link isn't yet live. But here's what's getting updated:

  • The latest Microsoft AKU Update 1.5.1.
  • Enhanced zoom for Internet Explorer.
  • Slight UI Modifications.
  • Various additional improvements to improve handset function.
  • Open Standalone LBS Supported and Performance Enhanced (This may Support 3rd Party Applications).
  • VZ Access Manager Supports Bluetooth Connection (SPP).
  • Correction of memory shortage issues.

OK, so it probably had nothing to do with us. That's cool. And it's the Saga, Touch Pro and Omnia owners who are the real winners here. Thanks for finally getting it done, Verizon. (And thanks, cplush, for the tip!)

Now, Verizon, about that Marketplace thing ...

Update: Rut-ro. Sure enough, the link got pulled. Keep an eye out folks.

Google Reader now on Kinoma Play

Google Reader now on Kinoma Play

Couple of cool updates for Kinoma Play this week. First up is the addition of Google Reader. (For the uninitiated, Google Reader is an RSS reader. For the un-uninitiated, see Malatesta's oldie but goodie piece on the importance of RSS.)

For all intents and purposes, what Kinoma is giving us here is access to feeds already in Google Reader. And that's nice because there's little I hate more than having to reload (or export) feeds from one place to another. Just sign in, and everything shows up. Kinoma says its GR app is in beta, so be forewarned.

Also added is Yelp (a location-based local business search) and Flights, as the name suggests, tracks flights.

More info over at the Kinoma blog. To get the new apps, first get the latest update of Kinoma Play, then choose "Get apps" from the home screen.

A September Release for the Acer F1?

3

We know that the Acer F1 is a Windows Mobile phone with a Snapdragon processor under the hood. We did mention back in March that the F1 might have a September release date and the rumors are growing in strength.

Engadget Mobile is reporting that the F1 is rumored to be released "at the end of September and in the fourth quarter".  Beyond the 1ghz Snapdragon processor, 3.5mm headphone jack, and 3.8-inch WVGA screen very little is known for sure about the F1.  It should be released running WM 6.1 Professional and upgradeable to WM 6.5.

No report as to where the F1 one might be released during this four-month window but we can only hope that the U.S. market is involved.

Toshiba TG01 shipped with virus

Toshiba TG01 shipped with virus

Oopsie. Apparently a few Toshiba TG01s (those are the Snapdragon-powered, massive-screened phones we've been gushing over a bit) sold in July shipped with a virus. And, no, we're not talking about the funky user interface. Inside-handy.de [via unwired view]

Through the virus caused damage at O2 have not been reported. Toshiba is currently assessing the impact and the cause. We want as quickly as possible to clarify to what a virus is involved and how the virus on the memory cards could reach. From the beginning of next week, the TG01 again be distributed.

No word, though, on what sort of trouble the virus caused, and this appears confined to O2, so no need to run out and buy virus protection for your phone, especially since the TG01 isn't even available in the United States. And for more on smartphones and viruses, check out our previous story.

ONEAPP headed to Zune HD?

1
1

ONEAPP headed to Zune HD?

It's app day here at WMExperts. Next up is, naturally, Microsoft, which apparently has applied for a trademark of the word ONEAPP. Why, you ask? The ONEAPP trademark application (uh oh, this is gonna get confusing) states:

Computer software for allowing mobile device users to send messages, make payments and access and play music, games and videos on mobile devices; computer software platforms for developing mobile applications; computer software, namely, software development tools for the creation of mobile applications; computer software for running retail store site for purchase and download of mobile applications over wireless networks

Also:

Online retail store services facilitating the download of computer software for use on mobile phones, media players and other portable electronic devices

Current consensus is that ONEAPP could well make its way to the Zune HD, and that's probably not a bad bet.We know the Zune HD will have an iteration of Internet Explorer on board, and the ability to run applications seems natural. Will it also appear on Windows Mobile 7? Stay tuned, folks.

Bluetooth group outs Armani 2 as Samsung B7620

1

Everyone and their mother is on Twitter. Yes, even mine. Turns out the Bluetooth Special Interest Group is, too, and they took it upon themselves to out the Samsung B7620 as the long awaited Armani 2 phone.

The Samsung B7610 is also known as the recently announced Omnia Pro (seen below), so we'd imagine things would fall along that line. Here are the specs on the SIG product page:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional.
  • 800MHz processor.
  • Dedicated graphics.
  • SMS/MMS
  • Stereo FM radio.
  • agps.
  • Business card scanner.
  • Work and Life mode.
  • Media player, photo viewer/editor (?!?), Pocket Office, etc.

Zero word on pricing or availability, other than it's Europe-bound.
