HTC Fuze and Official Specs and Image Get Out

3

The HTC Wiki has an official wiki and an official image of the AT&T Fuze, aka the US, GSM version of the Touch Pro. Specs are right in line with what we've been talking about:

  • WM 6.1 Pro
  • Qualcomm 7201a, 528MHz Processor
  • 2.8“, 640x480 Touchscreen
  • Slide-out keyboard has a Start and OK button (yes, it matters)
  • 850/1900/2100 3G bands, Quad-Band EDGE
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS
  • 3.1mp camera
  • 1340 mAh battery which can get you up to 8 hours (really?) of talk time under ideal conditions (read: EDGE and nothing else going on)

The included software looks pretty decent as well: Opera Mobile 9.5, TouchFlo 3D, Remote Desktop, WorldCard, JetCet Print, Sprite Backup, Video Share, and Push to Talk.

We've already heard that the price should be $299 after contract, so all we need now is a release date.

Xperia X1a - North American Edition

Xperia X1a - North American Edition

The official Sony Xperia Blog [via Engadget Mobile] has posted up a few details on the Xperia X1a -- which is apparently the official moniker for the North American version of the Xperia X1. The X1 saw its release everywhere else on September 30th, but here in the states we were pretty much left hanging, excepting a little FCC action.

Well, the good news is we can stop hanging on November 3rd, which is when Sony plans on announcing when they'll release the thing. The X1a is going to be a little different from the X1i (the international version) in expected ways (different radio bands and keyboard layout) and an unexpected way (slower video framerate).

The North American version will also keep the front facing camera, which you'll be able to use to take pictures of yourself cursing AT&T for not supporting two-way video calls.

It's been awhile, but you can still check out our early hands-on review of the Xperia X1 here.

Microsoft to Buy RIM? File Under *SNORT*

2

CrackBerry.com sends word that some analyst is thinking that if RIM's stock drops low enough, Microsoft will snap them up in a (presumably hostile) acquisition.

Didn't we hear this story a year ago? Don't RIM and Microsoft have fundamentally different philosophies about how push email should work? Don't you think that “Microsoft had no comment” can be read as “Psh! Right” instead of “OOOOH, they won't say no!”? Hasn't Microsoft repeatedly said they're not interested in making smartphone hardware?

Aren't you getting tired of idle speculation like this?

HTC T8290 Leaks Out: WideScreen with WiMAX

3

Nedge2k just received some images and specs on a here-to-for unknown and unseen device from HTC: the T8290. It's a squarish Touch HD but looks to be built to run on WiMAX with some GSM on the side. It's got that beautiful 800x480 screen, WiFi to back up the other radios, and Bluetooth (naturally).

Also as with the Touch HD, we're not confident this is coming to the states (after all, WiMAX is really only up and running in a reliable way in Baltimore), instead it seems destined for Russia's Yota network. Unlike the Touch HD, the T8290 doesn't appear to have a 3.5mm headset jack.

So what does this mean for us? One: it means that HTC really is building smartphones with WiMAX capability -- something we were worried wouldn't happen. Two: it means that HTC has now made two devices with 480x800 screen resolution. We're going to go ahead and hope that they have a third up their sleeve that's destined for these United States.

In case you missed it: Treo 800w for $199

2

Making the rounds on the Internets is a "sale" at Best Buy next week on the Treo 800w. And that's true, at least according to one site. But the even better news is that you can go snag one right now (and for the past several weeks, for that matter) for that same $199 price point, after rebates, contracts, blood tests, etc.

We're not looking a gift horse in the mouth. This is still $50 less than what you'll pay at either Palm's or Sprint's Web sites.

So If you're looking to re-up with Sprint and neither the HTC Touch Diamond or Touch Pro are doing it for you, swing by and give it a shot.

Gmail adds tweaks to IMAP

Gmail adds tweaks to IMAP

Those of us who rely on gmail for our everyday communications have a few little gripes when it comes to mobile access — and one big one.

That whopper namely comes in gmail's finicky IMAP (wikipedia def) support in that it uses "labels" instead of true folders like the rest of the civilized world. It's not that the labels are evil, it's just that they don't play well outside the Google sandbox.

Google has, however, recently implemented some new settings that allow you to pick and choose which labels are synced over IMAP. This should have different results depending on what you're using to pull (or push) in your gmail, so YMMV. We're still waiting on true push e-mail from the Big G, but we'll take any improvements we can get in the meantime.

Give it a shot, and let us know in the comments how it works for you.

Samsung SBH700 Bluetooth Headset

For those who like wireless gadgets, any collection is incomplete without a wireless stereo headset. While there is a good selection of these headsets out there, it seems as if only a handful can double as a hands-free solution for your Bluetooth enabled phone. One such hybrid is Samsung
