Microsof's Web-advertising for WM Ain't Too Shabby

6

Seems that MS is finally getting into the "How do we make WM look useful to the average-Joe?" by launching a fairly nice and informative web site that walks one through some important functions like Mobile Office,Windows Media Player, Mobile Outlook and the ever popular Live Search with a touch of humor to boot

Other sections include "See the phones" and "See the Software" allowing one to ...well you get it. Check it out and pass it on, I suppose.

Thanks to VW for the heads up.

Sports Illustrated introduces mySI mobile (beta)

One of the things that I like about always having a live internet connection on me is that a wealth of live information is always at my fingertips. Along that vein…one of the things that I am constantly seeking updates on (much to my wife’s dismay) are sports scores and news. Until recently, none of my favorite sports sites have been very good at handling mobile web browsers.

CNN’s Sports Illustrated appears to have noticed my plight. Available only on select Windows Mobile devices, mySI mobile allows you to view scores, schedules, and standings for your 4 favorite teams. The product page also states that the data is updated when the application is launched. The coolest feature is the ability to add games to your Outlook calendar.

I was going to do a quick review, but although my Blackjack is listed at the top of the Supported Phones, I get an “Unsupported Device” page when I attempt the install.

Update: I emailed the mySI support team and was sent here. Looks like the manual downloads for each of the supported devices. It would appear that my issue was that I am using WM6, whereas they list the Blackjack I as a WM5 device...

Let us know in the comments if you get it to work, as well as what your thoughts are. After the break - More screenshots!

Sprint Mogul Updated with Rev A, GPS

Although the Official download site isn't showing the new update, HTC has posted the long-awaited update to the Sprint Mogul, just as we predicted over the weekend. Go get it:

Direct Download from HTC America

Update: HTC is getting hammered. We'll host a mirror here for now:

Mirror

Since HTC hasn't yet posted the official update list, we can't say for sure what we're in for. However, we're darn sure that we are getting EVDO Rev A. and GPS is getting turned on in some way, shape, or form . Not to mention, version 3.35.651.2 should also hopefully include yet another fix for persistent Bluetooth problems.

Update: Here's the press release for you folks that love that sort of thing. GPS confirmed for really real and apparently the Mogul is the first Rev A. Handset. Seems odd that it's the first, no?

Gas at the pump, 20 dollars. Dinner for two 18 dollars. New pair of shoes, 70 dollars. Knowing how much you spent in the day just by looking at your phone, priceless. Sprint Mogul GPS / Rev A ROM Update on Monday March 10th!?!

5

I am not one to take rumors of ROM updates very seriously as you can see from my last thread on the topic in the PPC-6800 forum. But it appears that this time might be different. One of our newest members to the forums, Charlesclai, was the first to post that a Sprint rep shared that Monday March 10th is the date that they were just given in their Window Mobile Training this last week for the release of the newest ROM update for the Mogul. After doing a little snooping around it quickly became apparent that the same report was being posted on multiple forums from different independent Sprint sources.

This update is the one that we have all been waiting for that should include unlocking the Rev A radio and the GPS chip in the phone. It will probably also include a BT stereo fix, but unknown if it will address any other BT issues. The new ROM version is rumored to be 3.35.651.2.

It is not expected to have WM 6.1 or SprintTV, so don't get your hopes up too high for these.

I am still not willing to hold my breath until 9:00 am on Monday March 10th, but with as much confirmation as anyone can reasonably expect from a rumored ROM release date, you can bet that I will be at the HTC site to see if I can download it then.

Tip of the Week: Change your battery level increments!

Tip of the Week: Change your battery level increments!

Okay, this one is for all you folks out there who own a Windows Mobile Pro device that doesn't have the word "Treo" on the front (since those lucky ducks have it built in). I doubt it works for Standard :-( -- but would love it somebody could prove me wrong in the comments.

Basically, this little trick from no2chem and stroths at PPCgeeks (stroths is also a huge contributor here at 'Experts) will change your default and lumpy 10% battery increments to the much more accurate and cool 1%.

So basically instead of going from 80% battery down to 70%, you can see your precious battery trickle away at 77%, 76%, etc. w00t?

It works on the Touch and Mogul definitely and probably other WM devices. Since it's a .cab installer, if there are any problems you should be able to just un-install under your Remove Programs area. Post any feedback below and 'no' it does not consume more battery power, though you may be much more aware of your levels now!

Personally, this was one of my favorite features on the WM 7xx series as I really dig exact battery measurements (relatively)--now if we can do something about those pitiful 25% increments on Standard, eh?

iPhone Gets Exchange Support - Good or Bad for Windows Mobile?

13

You may have heard the news. Here's our live color commentary of the iPhone SDK event. There's a lot of information to parse out with regards to how this will shake out with Windows Mobile -- including how the applications on the iPhone looked stunning compared to most WM apps. More on that later. For now, let's talk about this: Apple licensed Exchange Active Sync.

What's it mean? Read on!

So the iPhone will gain push email, contacts, and calendar. That's big news for Microsoft - they'll pick up a lot of new users for their server products. In a lot of ways it's a bigger attack on RIM than it is on Windows Mobile. First - Apple denigrated the NOC during their presentation - just like Palm did - saying that a 3rd party in the middle is a Bad Idea. It's also a big attack on RIM because now two platforms do their push email via Exchange - Windows Mobile and the iPhone. Together the two might actually have a bigger marketshare than RIM for enterprise in very short order.

But now that the iPhone will support Exchange, will we see an exodus from WM to the iPhone? We'll definitely see some movement in that direction, yes. On the other hand, I am fairly confident in two things.

First, Exchange Active Sync Features on Windows Mobile will always be more advanced.notice, for example, that Apple seems to be writing their own management program instead of using Microsoft's RIM-Server-Killing Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager. So lock down, provisioning, and other management features will be more advanced with Windows Mobile. Yet that's the smaller point.

The second point is the bigger point: Apple's licensing of Active Sync is very likely to grow the overall Exchange pie at a much faster rate than their slice of it will steal from Windows Mobile. Which is to say, yes, some WM users will defect, but there will be even more new Windows Mobile users by dint of the ever-growing standardization on Exchange for mobile push email for enterprise.

...Or so it seems to me. Microsoft has until the release of the Apps in June to come up with something that looks like a response to the new features that will appear on the iPhone. Will they be able to deliver?
