Feed your Reddit addiction with Baconography for Windows Phone 8

Baconography Lead

When you need your fix of cats, WTF, and bacon you head to Reddit. We don’t have an official Reddit app on Windows Phone, but we’ve got some really good third party apps. Baconit is the reigning champ when it comes to getting Reddit on your Windows Phone. Newcomer Baconography doesn’t exactly look to challenge it, instead offering a slightly different take on the Reddit experience. Let’s check it out.

So what’s the biggest difference with Baconography compared to other Reddit clients? When using the app you get an experience that is more akin to skimming than interacting. It excels at being minimalist and fast.

Fire up Baconography for the first time and you can log in or not. If you want to leave comments you’ll probably want to log in. From there you’re presented with the front page. Swiping to the left or right will allow you to add subreddits to the pivot. Add your favorites like r/cringe or r/wheredidthesodago.

Browsing is a breeze once you have added your favorite subreddits. Clicking on the text will bring up the comments, while clicking the picture of icon on the right will open the content. Some content may open the web browser, for example a YouTube video.

Reading comments is a nice experience. Comments have a color band to the left of them to help identify their relation to one another. For example, grey is the color for the first comment, followed by green, and so on. You can minimize and maximize comments superfast with the + and – next to the username. Tapping the username will bring up a menu with different actions. You can upvote, downvote, reply, jump to the users’ profile, or report them.

Since this is the initial release there are some problems. But the developers seem very responsive and will be taking into consideration more features and suggestions to improve the app. The Reddit post in r/windowsphone announcing the app shows a lot of constructive feedback with the developer responding positively. It’s still light in features compared to Baconit, but it’s a solid first start for the app and shows a promising future where we’ll have two killer Reddit apps to go with on Windows Phone.

The app handles Imgur albums with multiple photos in a really nice manner. Open it and you’ll notice dots in the top left corner corresponding to the number of images in the album and your location within the album. It would be nice if the app supported a double wide tile or some sort of lockscreen support.

Baconography was built from scratch by Synergex using fast, efficient libraries. The team has made Baconography a free, open source project. Developers are welcome to share comments or take the code for their own use and apps.

You can download the app for Windows Phone 8 right here in the Store, use the QR code below, or swipe to the right in our app. There is also an app for Windows 8 of the same name from the developers. The Windows Phone 8 version happens to share some of the same code too. You can grab that for your Surface right here.

Baconit and now Baconography

Jazmac says:

Next it'll be Baconator and InstaBacon. Bacon just goes with everything. LOL.

discohaze says:

Nice post at 4am local time Sam :D

Shambels says:

I hope the live tile works for it unlike baconit.

TCChris says:

lets see if gifs play properly...

Judge_Daniel says:

Is there such a thing as an official Reddit app?

Catlasers says:

I was thinking the same thing; I dont think there is one at all actually.

iOS has iReddit, the only official app im aware of. but its a very lightweight app and little more than the mobile site. the reddot folk seem to prefer leaving development to awesome 3rd party devs

Siah1214 says:

Nope. There isn't one on any platform.

Tafsern says:

Well, this app was way to minimalistic, I can hardly do anything. Deleted and still a Baconit user :)

ZuNuKoo says:

Agree, but I'm keeping it, if it doesn't get updated in two months its out. Baconit is the one to beat. Use that daily.

RepoUK says:

Baconit could be good but it's about as stable as a one legged dog having a seizure.

I'll give this one a go, can't possibly crash less.

Tafsern says:

Baconit has always worked perfect on my 920 :)

TCChris says:

I know exactly what you mean, crash city and doesn't reliably save the state before it inevitably disappears. L920 here

cha0sman says:

Not to editorialize but it should be /r/windowsphone
