The first Windows 8.1 tablets go on sale in India; the Acer Iconia W4 arrives

Acer Iconia W4

After the quick launches of new Nokia Lumia devices in recent times, the device revelry continues in this part of the world. The Acer Iconia W4 tablets are available for pre-order on Flipkart, India’s leading online retailer.

Since Microsoft’s flagship Windows device – Surface – never hit the shores here and we still don’t have any clue about the availability of Dell Venue 8 Pro, the Acer Windows 8 tablets are the first ones to arrive in India.

The Acer Iconia W4 is an 8-inch Windows 8.1 (not Windows RT) tablet and bundles the complete Office 2013 Home and Student Edition. Powered by a 4th generation 1.8 GHz Intel Atom Quad Core processor and 2GB RAM, the device features a 1280 x 800 IPS display. The Acer Iconia W4 is the next step from the Iconia W3, the dubious tablet that was the first 8-inch one in the market but disappointed with the lacklustre display.

While it’s not much progression in terms of specifications, they’ve fixed the display which was the biggest, and perhaps only, sore point of the W3. The 32 GB edition is priced at INR 24,999 and the 64 GB edition is priced at INR 26,999. The estimated release date is in fourth week of December. The store also lists cases for Acer Iconia W4 tablets in several colors available for INR 2,999 although none are in stock yet. Check out the store here.

Would you pick or recommend the Acer Iconia W4? It’s full-blown Windows, pint-sized.

Thanks Sritech for the tip!

Waiting for something better.

I actually loved the W3. Had all the right ports without the ridiculous start button placement of the Venue 8. When I got my hands on it, it really made me wonder if I really needed the Surface Pro I own. I'd definitely check out the W4.

Good to know. I had eyed the W3. But the reviews about the screen scared me.

Not a bad price really. In US its $330 (Rs 20.5K) + taxes. In India taxes are around 15-20% of taxes on tablets and laptops.

In fact it is the first time I am seeing close to US pricing. Only Apple is doing that with their ipads (not iphones).

Don't get Scroogled :P

Bmrk says:

Ye but that runs a mobile os (lagdroid), not Windows ;)

Nexus 7 has s4 pro not SD600.
ACER W4 has bigger screen, full windows, MS office, SD card, faster processor

Selfie13 says:

Ok, but that's Android on an ARM processor vs Windows 8.1 on an Intel X86 processor, lets not forget it also includes Office 2013 H&S.

Great to see a X86 - windows pc tablet in Indian market. Acer W4 was released on clover trail which is far below the new bay trail in overall performance. This is my only conern.

Looks like Acer is dumping their stock in non US markets

Etios says:

Completely wrong info, Acer Iconia W4 is a latest Baytrail product, don't spread misinformation if you don't have the exact info which can be confirmed by a simple web search.

I have the W3 it does the job perfectly.

Great price. As a laptop alternative. I hope it gets hdmi output and keyboard accessories. Price is perfect, and while storage may seem less it still is great

I just bought this a few days ago.  I'm from Manila, Philippines and it cost P18,900 (32GB version).  I'm pretty satisfied with this tablet.  I like that it has a microHDMI port but I'm still trying to find one (micro-HDMI to VGA).  Battery life is amazing.  It lasts more than a day of casual use. Casual means grabbing it, surfing the web, facebook, youtube videos and emails and putting it to sleep and using it sparringly with my laptop.  Battery is really good. My thoughts:

The good:

Battery life, screen is a huge improvement, build quality is good although some people may not want the slippery brushed dark aluminum paint scheme but works for me, WIFI reception is good, boot time is very good (fastest is around 5 secs).  No bloatware or AV pre-installed although I have removed some Acer programs. 12GB free afterwards. Home buttons is I think executed well, its not capacitive and you don't hit it by accident.

The not so good:

Weight - I would have gotten the Mixx 2 but it does not have microHDMI.  I can say its manageable. Speaker is not that loud so a good headphone is a must.  Camera is what is expected its not that good but video is okay (how is that? I don;t know)

Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and I will keep this. I will give this 4 out of 5 stars.

Happy Holidays!

Is this having A-GPS/GPS as mentioned on PhoneArena?
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Acer-Iconia-W4_id8184

I think it does but I can't seem to validate it because bing maps I think does not support GPS (I could be wrong).  I'm trying to download and install GPS apps to verify.  I have tried Track location on Windows Store but it does not work if there is no WIFI.

Please let me know the status, as I am still confused on buying between Encore & W4. :(
