Xbox fans rejoice as Six-Guns has arrived on Windows Phone 8

It’s been a rough few weeks for Xbox Windows Phone games. We haven’t seen a new Xbox-branded game since UNO & Friends released at the end of July, for crying out loud. Sure, the new version of Fruit Ninja and Chaos Rings’ recent Windows Phone 8 compatibility have helped, but mobile Xbox fans still thirst for brand new games and Achievements.

Today that thirst gets quenched for a while! Like a much-needed whisky on the rocks after an afternoon showdown, Six-Guns has finally arrived on Windows Phone 8. First announced back in March, Six-Guns is one of the 15 games that Gameloft recently promised in August. It also happens to be free! See our first impressions video and more details after the break!

Windows Phone heads to the Wild West

Six-Guns starts with a stylish, fully-voiced motion-comic introduction. Our hero (or is that antihero?) Buck Crosshaw wakes up just outside of a desert town, head throbbing with hangover. You know, pretty much your friendly neighborhood Games Editor’s typical Sunday morning experience. Soon a woman’s scream beckons, and the tutorial begins…

Gameloft’s latest release is an open world action game modeled after Rockstar’s popular Red Dead Redemption console game. A virtual stick on the left controls Buck’s movement, while swiping anywhere on the right adjusts the camera. A large revolver button delivers melee blows or fires Buck’s gun. If you’ve played a console-style action game on mobile phones such as The Amazing Spider-Man then you’ll feel right at home with Six- Guns’ controls.

Slinging guns ain’t easy

This is a Wild West-themed game that spans a large world, so of course our hero needs a horse. Tapping the horse button at the top-left corner calls your trusty steed. Once you’ve accepted a quest, you can simple hop on Rainbow Dash (or whatever you call your horse) and follow the glowing waypoint markers to the mission destination.

Along the way you’ll pass a beautifully rendered landscape. Six-Guns features some excellent art designs, though the frame rate falls a bit short. It seems to run on the same engine as The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises, which means it’s playable but not the smoothest game in town. I’m willing to put up with some frame rate hiccups (or what you young’uns call lag) in order to play a huge game with a cool western theme.

Get it now on phone, soon on Windows 8

The lineup of Xbox-enabled Windows Phone 8 games is looking slim for the rest of the year, so Six-Guns came not a moment too soon. The game clocks in at just under 500 megabytes, but as with all Windows Phone 8 games, you’ll need at least four times as much space (approximately two gigabytes) in order to install it.

An interesting facet of Gameloft’s August announcement that you might’ve missed is that Six-Guns will be coming to Windows 8 too! The Windows 8 version will be Xbox-enabled and free, just like this one. Gameloft hasn’t announced a specific release date for the tablet and PC game yet – hopefully it comes sooner rather than later.

No clue... there are many other games that are not on wp8 like Tentacles is an awesome game that's a Xbox game but it's only on wp7... Things like this really have me worried...

Pinball FX.  Want it so badly on my phone.
Though, you can't blame MS for something the developer won't make.  Ah well.

Unless Microsoft failed to pay them as promised or something. We can't know what caused Zen not to complete the game since they refuse to talk about it.

Whiskey on the rocks?
Any self respecting cowboy drinks it straight.
Not to mention the lack of ice in the wild west.
...
AND IT'S FREE!!??!!

It's really not that big, when you look at the sizes of the downloads for many of their other games (particularly the superhero and shooter ones). Even Asphalt 7 was a bit bigger than this.

I have this and Spartan assault on my 521 and now I have 923mb left. Install to SD would be nice, so would having apps install at the file size that appears in the market...or showing the install size instead in the market.

Great, just great. I waited ages for this game to be released since it was announced. Now its here in the week my 920 is off for repairs. :(

You should've just taken it to a Microsoft Store and they would've given you a NEW one and a 2 year warranty for $99.

Yes sir, I bought my 920 last year Black Friday from At&t. My daughter dropped my phone on the concrete and shattered the screen. I went to At&t and they said physical damage isn't covered. I had 3 options: #1, use an upgrade but that was for the wife. She upgraded to the 1020 at the Microsoft store. #2, pay $100 and get a refurbished phone with the balance of my original 1 year warranty which would be 4 months. #3, pay $125 to use the insurance and I would get a refurbished phone with a 1 year warranty but I would've had to send a copy of my bill, a copy of my I.d. And a copy of the original receipt of the purchase of the phone. They suggested I get a screen protector until I decided what I wanted to do. I left infuriated and nothing resolved. I went to the Microsoft Store showed them my phone and asked about a screen protector. That's when they told me they could hook me up. When I was leaving they said if I have any issues with my phone don't go to At&t go there and they'll take care of it. I will not go back to At&t again for anything. Any upgrades will be done at the Microsoft Store. My upgrade isn't until March. MICROSOFT ROCKS!

Sorry, no MS stores in the UK atm. I doubt EE would be that kind. I am a little envious of the service you mentioned though, ms needs to spread the love :-).

Bunch of android haters. If the Xbox games stop on WP then android may be my next phone. Been with WP since 2010 launch.

Any one knows how many apace you need for installing this .. :) Freed up 'till 2.3 Gb.. No luck yet :)

Ouch!  You're probably just a few megabytes short. If you queue up the download from a web browser, that should get it to install with a bit less free space.

I think that Microsoft needs to improve this! I just can't understand why take so much space ( more than 4 times the real length)!

same problem with me. it's a 437mb download. got 2.05gb free storage, and it still says i've reached my storage limit!
had to delete so many other games to make place for this, and it's still whining for more space.. -_-

Just noticed it has a strange plus though :) ... After making space and installing it I just recovered 50 MB from the temporary files and another 130 MB from the Other :) ... Not to bad.. :)

Sorry to hear that from you. But it only takes less than a GB on my Lumia 620. I think a total of 800 - 900MB of space was taken from my L620.
Hope you resolve your problem sooner. May Gameloft bless you! :3

I've also got this problem with SA but also here with six-guns. For some reason neither of them show up on my SD card, either...

I successfully installed it with only 1,6GB free space, 736MB left now. Lumia 620, xap download via PC, copied to SD, installed with store app.

Cool, thanks for the reply, I think I'll wait for the review before downloading, while the game is free, is a bit heavy on the MBs, and I'm kind of running out of space on my phone :)

Any fun this one? Hesitating to install cuz my phone is out of storage...again! Really need the next WP to have sd card support!!

Lol what FPS.. I hate this Adreno 225 GPU! And also Gameloft should optimize more. Runs so smoothly on iPod 3. Gen, but lags so much on Samsung Ativ S..

That could just be your Samsung. Runs smooth on my Lumia.
I've noticed that the only thing that is slow on my phone is the lone Samsung app (could be because I'm not suppose to have it LOL), it got me wondering if all Samsung's lag.

So much potential for SD cards and Windows holds things up, once again just throw $ at it and it'll go away. Whaa!!!

Turn airplane mode on. Then go to date and time settings turn off set automatically. Set it back in time and launch your game. Click lottery play for free then go back and change to one day ahead and repeat.

Well its a gameloft production. I'll wait for everyone else to test it out and see how many glitches and broken achievements there is before I play this one...

I've said it before and I will say it again and again, Microsoft needs to just buy Gameloft and have them just make exclusive WP8/Xbox Live (or whatever it's going to be called on the One) games. That way, we would be assured of two things, quality games and a new release every month.

Looks pretty interesting.  Nice to see a new Xbox game.  Let's go MS, one a week please.  I really don't think that's too much to ask.
