HTC confirms its support for Windows Phone 8 with a press release - more than one device due?

WP Central

We already knew from todays earlier Microsoft event that HTC would be continuing their support with Windows Phone but a press release direct from HTC has just hit my inbox so I thought I had better share.

Note the way that Peter Chou says 'smartphones' and not 'smartphone'. I presume we will see more than one new device then? Super news.

HTC, a global leader in mobile design and innovation, today pledged its ongoing support of Microsoft by backing the new Windows Phone 8 platform. Building on the two companies’ long mobile partnership dating back to 2000 and including more than 40 million phones sold, HTC will be bringing new Windows Phone 8 smartphones to market later this year.

“HTC is committed to Windows Phone more than ever and we are excited to be bringing new Windows Phone 8-enabled smartphones to customers later this year,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation.  “With the introduction of Windows Phone in 2010, Microsoft initiated a new powerful mobile ecosystem with a consumer experience that was both unique and user friendly.”

“We have seen great momentum for Windows Phone since its launch in 2010, with 100,000 apps now in the Marketplace”, said Terry Myerson, Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone at Microsoft. “HTC is one of our closest partners and we share a common goal in driving people-centric innovation, which makes it easy to work together. We can’t wait to see how HTC brings Windows Phone 8 to its product portfolio”.

Don't u mean 7.8?

RaRa85 says:

7.8 is for current devices not the new ones.

dameon_03 says:

looks like we will see more oems jump on board with wp8 being revealed. i cant wait to see what is in store for this platform

Andrew L says:

Hopefully Sprint will be on board.
I need a 4: or 4.3" screen.
I'm happy with my Arrive, but I'd like something new.

theefman says:

Same kind of press release when Mango was released, and all they've done is basically release 3 phones with nary an advert and run back to android. I expect them to do the same with WP8 and not do anything to promote them.

birdman_38 says:

Don't be such a fuddy-duddy

He's just being realistic, they don't particularly care for Windows Phone.

schlubadub says:

They have always cared about WP. I've never seen a HTC advert (direct from HTC) for any of their phones. Carriers may advertise them, but I don't see why manufacturers should be expected to. Microsoft should be advertising for all their partners. The only reason Nokia are advertising is because they were paid hundreds of millions of dollars to do so.

CJ Thunder says:

A new surround type phone would be great.

al.cantara says:

I love my Titan2 so looking forward to their nextgen phones. I do agree that they need to step up their marketing push and hopefully they will.

Mon-El says:

Surely they can now just package existing android hardware up for windows phone 8. Because of the hardware now compatible with both OS's we should see all new phones from HTC running both stood and WP8

Mon-El says:

Droid, not stood (autocorrect fail)

Should have auto-corrected to "stool" LOL

big dooze says:

im guessing a Motorola WP8 device is out of the question????

Google owns Motorola lol of course there won't be a Motorola wp8

nevzy101 says:

Will my hd7 get the 7.8 upgrade guys sorry for the daft question

Yes, all existing phones will get 7.8, carrier depending.

dubbin_irie says:

Not carrier dependant. Windows is updating whether the carrier likes it or not.

myrandex says:

If only they could release a super wp8 phone combining a touch pro 2 style sweet keyboard, screen size and camera of the Titan II, with other goodness WP8 opens up.

planetarian says:

here's hoping for a new Surround!
Some proper marketing would be nice too!

HTC One X style phone running WP8??? Yay!!!!!

rich4A1 says:

I heard that HTC is not very happy with Google giving Samsung the latest Android codes before HTC gets it.  If Microsofts shares the codes with everyone at the same time, HTC might actually go stronger on WP than Android.  BTW, from the hindsight, if Microsoft shared the roadmap with OEMs, doesn't it actualy make a lot of sense that HTC only had limited number of Mango phones?
BTW Mr. Chou sent out this message at 3am local time?

AriesDog says:

I'd love to see an HTC Arrive 2. Not just because it would mean a new WinPhone for Sprint but the Arrive was one of the overlooked best models of the first generation.

timwp12 says:

The HTC arrive will get the 7.8 upgrade for free. Yes HTC arrive is a great wp and querty keyboard makes phone more better in typing compare to lumia 900 virtual keyword. I heard sprint will have new htc wp8

AriesDog says:

Where was this announced? Because Microsoft at the announcement said that AT&T, TMo, and Verizon said they were supporting WP8. Sprint was notably absent.

melvinmajor says:

Why not the HTC Titan III who would be on WP8 ?? :P
Thanks HTC for my HTC Titan X310e Limited Black Edition ^_^

melvinmajor says:

I bought it on 29th of September and received it on 4th of October :P

Neo Nuke says:

I've never seen or heard of that phone. Pics or not true.

The HTC ONE X needs wp8

Fray26 says:

HTC said that they will release a windows phone and its gonna be like the X. Samsung is doing the same with galaxy s III

trazer says:

As long as I get a 4.5" or better screen I'll leave HTC for Nokia. I love my titan 2, but like nokias support better!

Funny how HTC suddenly crawl out from under the woodwork when they see the possibility of a little free advertising. I love my Radar but haven't really felt the love from HTC with support for WP7.

timwp12 says:

Of course HTC comes back once they heard wp8 will support Muticore phones. Which blows away iPhone & android hahhaha

Elchicos says:

The following HTC devices probably will be released: HTC HD8, HTC 8 Pro, HTC 8 Desire, HTC 8 sensations lol can't wait for those devices! Hope they also can come up with a clearblack display!

schlubadub says:

You forgot about Titan :P

JamesDax3 says:

The contract I have with my HD7 on T-Mobile runs out in December.  Looks like I'll be upgrading to the HD8 unless T-Mobile gets a Nokia WP8 device.

RyanDaLyon says:

Cool, HTC announces this, but doesn't mean they will advertise, or support them. I haven't seen one ad for the beautiful HTC titan II.

Fray26 says:

Umm... They are going to support Windows Phone 8. So that means there will be advertisements and etc.

timwp12 says:

Lol good news for HTC users wp 7.5. I can't wait upgrade to 7.8 and maybe buy new wp8 phone once my phone provider have it available.

Premium1 says:

I think these manufacturers should do what they are doing with android and make one "flagship" phone that will be on every carrier. None of this exclusivity crap, if MS really wants WP8 to sell you have to have a better selection of phones on all carriers.

Neo Nuke says:

Glad to see HTC here. I know they put most of their eggs in the Android box, but I hate Samsung with a passion and refuse to give them my money. They're uninnovative apple copycats and slave drivers that don't care about their employees.

schlubadub says:

I want HD8. Gotta have my kickstand :P

Tony F. Baby says:

HTC HD8 sounds pretty cool.

I'm kind of surprised to see a lack of mention of HTC updates/patching for current WP owners, specifically the Titan. While my phone seems to sound fine, I've heard other Titan owners experience the Charlie Brown teacher/adult syndrome with their voice via the Titan. No amount of Google translating can help with a mic that sounds like the user has marbles-in-the-mouth.

Step up HTC or your stay in the WP ecosystem could be shortlived...
