Huawei’s Ascend W2 Windows Phone gets a Russian review

Ascend W2

Huawei is attempting to fill in the Windows Phone market where Nokia is either absent or not as strong, and although their Ascend line is not half-bad, it’s not as (pardon the pun) luminous as Nokia’s offerings. Still, the Ascend W1 and the recent Ascend W2 do show that the massive Chinese company can make a solid low to mid-range Windows Phone.

Back in August, we reported on the W2 launching in China. In that article, some initial impressions of the device were given, but since then we haven’t seen much of the colorful Windows Phone. Now, WP7Forum.ru has literally “found” one and have given their initial impressions. The device was reportedly going to go on sale in Russia in October, though so far that has not happened.

Ascend W2

To refresh, the Huawei Ascend W2 has the following features:

  • 4.3-inch WVGA-display
  • 1.4 GHz dual-core processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 8GB of built-in memory; microSD expansion
  • Dimensions: 134 x 66.7 x 9.9 mm
  • 1750 mAh battery
  • 5MP camera (no flash)

The W2’s most notable and unique feature is that the capacitive button lights (back, Windows, Bing) can match the device Accent theme. So if you have a green Accent color, your buttons will glow with a green hue. It’s a neat addition, something we’re surprised no one else has done yet.

The phone itself appears to get some praise from WP7Forum.ru, though they’re not overly impressed either.

There’s no word if the Ascend W2 will go wider release outside of China, though India and Russia are two countries expected to launch the device. Users can find the W2 online for around $250 USD and we’ll be sure to pick one up as soon as possible.

Head to WP7Forum.ru for more photos and impressions.

nice, if you're looking for a sub standard mobile

Whodaboss says:

How is this "sub standard"?  And so what is the "standard" ALL phones should be made?

boovish says:

He thinks all phones should have 6" screens and android

makaone says:

Nice let windowsphone market share keep growing

aitt says:

Hopefully it's pushed more. I'm waiting to see the final OPPO WP product. If its as good as the Find 5 I may try to obtain one. This wont outsell the 520 though and at that price point I'd spend a $100 more and get the 1320. This is why Micromax is very beneficial for WP should they push foward for WP.

What!? No, in Soviet Russia - phones review YOU!

Hahah In Soviet Russia phone charges you :D

There is no such thing as "soviet" Russia.

Hello Daniel, just to ley you know, I just saw the announcement that halo Spartan assault will be on Xbox 360 and xbox one on December. I know it's off topic lol. Just wanted to say it :P greetings :D

AndyCalling says:

If it had one gig of ram it'd be an option. If it also had 16 gig of internal flash it'd be a real consideration. As it is, I can't see it out competing an 820 or even a 720. It may out do a 620 possibly?

TheRealGiova says:

Please don't buy this Huawei. You might buy a paperweight. I have a W1 and I'm still waiting GDR2 and if I try to contact Huawei they usually don't reply. At the moment only few version of branded W1 are updated, for all the other no news. It's frustating. Don't risk, buy a Nokia or HTC, without doubt is the right choice, you will never miss an update! I know that GDR2 is a minor update, btw it fix other storage, and this is important for phone with poor memory.

RyanAMG says:

My 928 buttons are different colors. Windows is purple, back is white, and bing is amber.

Miistercoool says:

Picture or your lying❕❕❕

False! That image is not taken by an iPhone btw. Its another windows phone i guess. WP saves images as WP_12345678... etc by default. Name of the image clearly proves that

RyanAMG says:

Shows how much you know. I texted to my phone saved it pushed to SkyDrive and shared it. If you want to see that you're wrong try that and you will have same results. I think I know what phone I took the picture with.

Even if you texted (image!?) to your phone, it should've been saved under "saved pictures". Renaming the saved picture while uploading by itself in SkyDrive is none of MS business... Have many pictures in SkyDrive but never got it renamed to WP_xxxxxxx thing though.

Miistercoool says:

I don't see any colors...

Aryan Angel says:

What about his lying?

No he's right, the 928 button colors are different from other lumias. They're all yellow.

My Lumia 928 has 3 yellowish buttons across the board. In fact I've replaced three 928s and I have been disappointed with the button appearance. You can see the murky layer that is supposed to give that amber color. That's my only gripe though.

Miistercoool says:

I have the 820 and I'm never getting another windows phone with specs like that, it's just my opinion so don't murder me but those specs are horrible❗

The specs are just brutally average.  At this point I'll stick to Nokia because of the display tech.

chezm says:

I like the design and size

KasakDesign says:

The design is cool yes but if the specs aren't right what's the point? I guess that's relative to the user but I love my Lumia 920 getting a 1020 soon and I can't downgrade

Etios says:

Good, more OEMS and more devices are required for increasing the marketshare of windows phone.
