Lync Mobile for Windows Phone shows up in Marketplace but you can't have it yet

Lync Mobile 2010

We know that Lync Mobile for Windows Phone or just 'Lync 2010' is wanted by many, being one of the most anticipated apps this year. In fact, we saw it in action at Nokia World and heard a few weeks ago that its availability was imminent. By allowing workers to stay connected via the mobile phones, employees can now easily initiate conference calls, meetings and keep in touch all within the tightly controlled Microsoft Lync system for enterprise.

So it's a good sign that we've been able to actually see it in the Windows Phone Marketplace but alas, you can't actually download it just yet. Evidently, if you click on a meeting request URL in Internet Explorer 9 on your phone, you get the above dialog screen, asking if you want to download the app. You are then taken to the Marketplace where the app description and screenshots are visible.

In other words, Microsoft has the deep linking already in motion for Lync Mobile, they're just waiting for the go ahead to actually publish. Massive teaser, yes. But at least you know you should have this app well before Christmas.

Very cool. Unfortunately, work has no immediate plans to upgrade from Office Communicator, and from what I understand Lync Mobile isn't compatible with the older system.

Nataku4ca says:

yep, you need Exchange 2010 for it to work i believe

Definitly good to see, but Skype is needed more.

I talked to the MS marketing guy at the Inner Circle event here in Nashville about Lync. He said that it would require an updated version on the Communications server as well and that that version was not out yet. So it may be awhile before you can download it and longer before you can actually use it if that is the case.

Fiann is correct. You wont be able yse Lync untill you upgrade your server to Lync SP1, which isn't out yet. Microsoft is holding the release untill all other versions are ready. Apparently the iOS version is the one they are waiting on.

This is a big important step for WP and rounds off the already well received Office hub. If you are using OCS 2007 then you are right Lync is not compatable as it runs off the 2010 technology. In fact install Lync on your computer running OCS 2007 and you will find a nice spangly copy of Lync but no way of using it.
Having said that if your office is using the OCS 2007 technology I would think that with the major improvements in Lync there would be very few reasons to want to stay with 2007 outside of the effort needed and possibly the cost of upgrades but thats why the Business gods gave us budgets.
