Windows Phone Mango coming September 1? [Rumor]

Filed under:

PocketLint is reporting that "multiple trusted sources" have confirmed that Mango will begin rolling out on September 1.  This is a bit earlier than initial reports of a Fall release and well short of Steve Ballmer's claim that it will arrive for Christmas, denoting the shopping season.  PocketLint says the timing was chosen to coincide with the IFA consumer electronics extravaganza in Berlin, which is slated for September 2-7.

This would be a great stage for some of the big WP7 manufacturers, like Samsung, LG, and HTC to show off their new goods heading into the holiday season.  However, the highly-anticipated line of Nokia WP7 devices is not expected to be introduced until the Nokia World conference in October.  The build-up to Mango has been rife with talk of mystery devices and rumored sightings, so take this one with a grain of salt as well.

It also raises a lot of questions. Like what about carrier approval? On what devices? What countries? Are these upgrades too? Etc. So for now, we'll be a little cautious as we're not expecting a unified, global launch.

Here we go again, did we not learn anything from the No-Do fiasco. There are going to be alot of angry people calling Microsoft a failure if they don't deliver on this speculated date they have nothing to do with and hasn't even been announced.

What do you expect them to do? Sue PocketLint? They cannot prevent the rumours - especially now, when we know that Mango is RTMed.

I'm not bashing PocketLint for reporting what they find that's their job, I am just pointing out that just a few months ago there were a bunch of rumors about when No-Do was going to be released and when none of those rumors turned out to be true people were mad at Microsoft for not living up to the rumors. It was ridiculous the anger people had over this issue and I have a feeling this time if there are any hiccups it will be 10x worse.

If stupid people want to use rumors as facts, call them out on being stupid. I saw a comment on another site about how someone feels like they got burned by MS because they bought the HD2 with the impression that it'd be upgradeable to WP7 when MS never said it would. People called him on his BS though.Right now, we can only hope it's true and goes smoothly.

But !!! HTC said it was upgradable to Windows Phone 7...

Any rumor should be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, Microsoft might have learned (hopefully!) from NoDo and is playing the reverse psychology game. Pubicly state that Mango will come out in Nov/Dec, when in fact it will probably be out in Sep/Oct.

I hope this is the case - I don't see any reason why would Mango be delayed until November or December (at least for existing devices).

Plan for mid to late November and hope for earlier.

I'm running the 7712 version and it makes me really hungry for 7720 Mango and Id love to see Microsoft be able to do a worldwide simultaneous release skipping the carriers altogether but will it happen...I doubt it, unfortunately for those of us on AT&T.

Or Verizon...

I really do hope they come out with it asap. Mango should blow away most of my iOS friends away. Till now, most of my selling points have been about upcoming features. The last time I was this excited about a mobile OS was way back in 06 when the first iPhone came out. Kudos to MS for this. I just hope it's as juicy as it sounds.UNRELATED: Appreciate if I can get help on this... If I install any of the developer Builds of Mango on my Focus, will all my apps/data/contacts get removed? I don't want all my texts to vanish as well. So pls if anyone can confirm, do let me know. Thanks.

Not when you install the beta build, but when you revert back to NoDo for the official update. Or rather, anything that happens during the time you are using the beta will be lost.

I really hope Mango is released September 1st. I have a feeling this date will come and go, but you never know. Maybe MS is making up for the NoDo update debacle? Who Knows, I just want my HD7 running Mango ASAP!

Just a rumor but at least it's a good news rumor. Let's face it, Mango has been RTM'd and all the feedback is good which lends credance to the general time frame. If it actually happens it will be amazingly good news for everyone. Bring on the juicy Mango goodness. And can I get an Amen from my smokin hot wife?

That will be a month after RTM basically. Seems realistic that some carriers might start pushing it as early as 9/1

I'd bet that it will be released to all carriers on Sept 1st than released to the public. If it was a Sept 1st release to the public, that would mean Verizon wireless would have it sometime in March 2012.I guess I will be getting my copy of Mango RTM/7720 from XDA because I know Verizon will not have it any time soon.

I don't know. Unlike NoDo there is a little more incentive to get Mango out. Outside of Copy & Paste NoDo brought no real visible changes to the average user. Mango on the other hand adds a lot of new features. If Microsoft is also going to wrap an advertising campaign around it a carrier will probably want to "ride the wave".

Yea, but, it will be up to the carrier to release it. A big update like this would have to have carrier approval (unless MS has been working with them for months).Verizon has shown that they have very little interest in Windows Phone. So rushing out a big update to people for 1 phone would not be at the top of their list. It's like the Anroid People wanting to go to Gingerbread from a past version, Yea, they should get it but, when the carrier desides to test/release it. There will be phones that can handle it but, it will never be released due to lazy carriers.

Remember with Nodo AT&T added the WISPr WIFI protocol to the phone along with the ATT address book as a way to backup your contacts. I wouldn't be suprised if that is what took so long to test on WP7.If ATT doesn't add anything extra to the Mango update, I would think we would get it very close to GA.

Okay, so a few things we know to be certain: Mango was RTM'd to the OEMs and carriers, so they are working it; Beta 2 refresh is wildly popular among developers and non-developers alike (and is nearly full-featured); @Eric Hautala, GM of Customer Experience Engineering basically said he's dropping out of contact while focusing completely on getting the Mango rollout ready. Here is the speculation that some are drawing: That Microsoft is now focusing on the rollout might imply that at least one OEM and one carrier have already responded with a thumbs up and Microsoft has incorporated whatever tweaks they requested; the fact that Microsoft does staged rollouts makes this a reasonable method to decide who gets rolled out when, so why delay the rollout until ALL players say "okay"?; They've heard the overwhelming complaints of current users who wanted a smoother, better process, so they aren't going to wait any longer than is absolutely necessary to start pushing Mango out; the fact that WP7 is pretty much stagnant in the market coupled with early popularity of Mango would seem to indicate a strategy of getting this out there ASAP could boost the platform. These are reasonable guesses, but that's based on what most of us would probably consider smart business. It may turn out that they decide to announce/launch a bunch of new devices w/Mango before rolling with updates. I think this would be a HUGE mistake, but it's not unprecedented.

It needs to be sooner rather than later. Let's face it, MS cannot wait til the "holiday season" for Mango to come out. WindowsPhone 7 would have become just a memory. They need to release it soon. Although being on ATT I expect the mango update sometime after Christmas.

I have just got say it. Apple is coming with ios 5 and a new handset and Google is rolling out ice-cream in October. So if they do it now or later their is major competition. These handsets that are coming have to kick serious but in terms of function and power. Beeding up the specs but keeping it basically in the same styled handset won't work. I am waiting on Nokia but if they just release one handset they are going to loose already and as I said before the Sea Ray handset just isn't that exciting nor is the HTC mazza. WP7 has to rock in every area against well established competition.

I call BS ! Joe Belfiore said it was just a rumon on twitter...Finally someone inportant when it comes to WP saying something about the subject...http://wmpoweruser.com/windows-phone-7-mango-september-1st-release-just-...So, now it's a maybe...
