Microsoft releases statement on faulty Xbox One Blu-ray drives

Xbox One's Blu-ray Drive

All launches of new technology are usually accommodated by a few reports of problematic possibility. Following the release of Microsoft’s latest gamin console, the Xbox One, a small minority of users have stated that their consoles exhibited strange grinding noises from within. The problem, as many have already figured out, lays upon the console’s integrated Blu-ray drive. Microsoft has finally responded to consumer reports and will be taking action to correct the issue.

A spokesperson from Microsoft stated that the company is working closely with those effected and that they intent to send out replacement consoles to those, as soon as possible. “Rest assured”, stated Microsoft’s spokesperson, “we are taking care of our customers.

While the hardware failures are nowhere as widespread as the Red Ring of Death issues that plagued the Xbox 360, the faulty hardware can’t help but to bring back bad memories for some. On the other side of the pond, Sony is having better luck with their hardware and have released a statement stating that less than 1% of their consoles are affected by problems and that the figure is “within the expected range for a new product introduction.”

Xbox One

The debate between Microsoft and Sony fans have never been greater than before, with the launch of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The companies are headed in two opposite directions, with two distinct visions of how their consoles will be utilized within the living room.

While the breaking down of some Xbox One consoles are nowhere near positive for Xbox One fans and add some fuel to the fire for Sony fans, Microsoft’s sales of the Xbox One are going extremely well.

There is a bit of irony and humor to the fact that the one part failing within Microsoft’s console, the Blu-ray drive, is a technology heavily backed and developed by Sony.

Are you experiencing disc drive issues with your Xbox One or is all working well on your end?

Microsoft releases statement on faulty Xbox One Blu-ray drives

U just posted an article on overheating on the surface, surely I shld have waited a day before posting this one. Hehe!

I have movies around 2-4 Gigs each and it's faster by using a flash drive... Hopefully MS will make it if it's possible.

If you plug in your flash drive into your computer, play the movie on the xbox video app, and then hit share you should be able to shoot the video to your xbox one wirelessly through smartglass. Just saying...

You can stream from W8 through the devices option. I've also got my HTC One to play movies and music on my Xbox One through Skifta.

Really? That still seems like a slap in the face, being forced to stream over the network or a cloud service, when you could right from a hard/flash drive on a previous generation system. Same goes for the PS4, I'm really surprised it can't stream video at launch. The way the front is slanted it's already looking like I need new thumb drives because they won't fit into that slim recessed slot.

It's good there don't seem to be many hardware failures, but until it has a bit more than basic functionality and maybe comes with a game, I'll hold off buying either system for a few more months.

Wait. Why do you have movies on flash drives? Are you watching illegally downloaded content or are you trying to watch digital copies of movies? Either way, why not just use Xbox Video or Amazon to rent a movie?

No illegal content. Don't have kids do you?

I rip my kids dvds to a thumb drive (16gb), and they can plug it in and pick what they want to watch. The origionals are kept safe in their cases. I burn a copy to keep in a binder in my van so they are available there too to watch, and if one of the vehicle copies gets ruined, I simply make another.

Just because somebody wants an alternative way to watch movies, does not imply that they are obtaining them in an illegal fashion.

There seem to be heaps of people having the problem with faulty drive. At least in Europe. Also green screen of death is quite common here.

It's not as if the launch day wasn't known so they had more than enough time to throughly test machines. IMO there is no excuse for any company to have issues like this, simply because it's a 'day one release'.

You're expecting something that no company or man in general can provide: Perfection.

The blu-ray drive isn't even manufactured by Microsoft, none of the components that make up the Xbox One are.

The only thing that you can trust is that our Sun will be around doing its job for a LONG time.

Lol they underclocked it by increasing the CPU from 1.60 GHz to 1.75 GHz and GPU from 800 MHz to 853 MHz. They sure have heating problems considering it runs cooler than the PS4.

http://www.planetextech.com/profiles/blogs/xbox-one-thermal-images

"In conclusion, the Xbox One runs about 15º-25ºF/10º-14ºC cooler than the Playstation 4, and much of this can most likely be attributed to its external power supply, as this is internal on the Playstation 4's smaller form factor."

There seems to be more issues with the ps4 on Amazon, and that's with the verified buyers. I wouldn't say they're having better luck with systems

PS4 release day, nothing negative was trending on Twitter. X1, within 12 hours #xboxonebroken was trending.

Both are new consoles. Both have some teething problems.

I feel sorry for any of my gaming brothers who suffer faults. But both parties should put down their weapons, its Christmas, its time to rejoice we have a new generation of device, not resort to petty squabbles.

Are you with me my Nextegen bretheren?!!!!   Hazaaaaaahhhhh

FYI, there is always a certain percentage of consumer products that will fail.  They know that the day they launch.  Go over to an AV forum like avsforum and you will see every make and model of TV set with issues as well as Bluray players, and audio equipment.  Even the iPhone and Lumias had issues.

We are making a big deal out of nothing.

Yeah I think both consoles have had similar and acceptable defect rates. I know about 30 people with Xbox one. No broken drives for any of them.

Xbox - please manufacture blu ray drives we want to put in our latest gaming console.
Sony - Sure I'll do that..;)

Have you ever seen a manufacturing contract?  The manufacture will have to pay for those faults.  There is no incentive to give anyone any bad part

Lol dead true the real problem is the retail chain GAME it just robbing customers on trade ins i used to love the shops but now cant stand it now cex is the chain to use excellent trade in prices

If you catch a cold and go look for info on your symptoms in the internet, you'll start thinking you have cancer. Internet loves hyperbole.

There is one page at the very back of the interwebs that simply reads the word: cancer, and almost everyone seems to reach it :P

Directed at all as in everyone? You are one person against all that you oppose, and you seem to assume that the opposition is great in number....you are either crazy, stupid......or a lover of Sony (who is definitely male) :D

Blu-ray drives are not built by Microsoft. They are either off-the-shelf item, or maybe with minimum customization.
Nothing is perfect... are you, with that comment!

Testing each drive for 10 minutes doesn't mean it will for for life. It may fail after a day or two of extended use.
And I am not defending Microsoft, I am defending technology in general. This is not uncommon.

Maybe I should have used /s, that reasoning was thrown around when news of PS4 failures surfaced, and used as an explanation of why the PS4 is cheaper, so I was kind of trying to point out how ridiculous it is.

I've always been an early adopter and have accepted the risk that comes with it. Overall my experience of doing that I would sum up as better than expected.

I and no one I know have any problems with our Xbox Ones. With the exception of 1 dead controller, all has been well so far.

Don't know if it's due to PS getting more media attention, but it does seem that there are more complaints regarding Sony's console

ppl only need to look at amazon reviews to see both xbox and ps4 are having trouble about 33% of Sony users affected

I have tested my blueray drive and all is well i am sure it still is a low number affected even if it may be more than Sony"s blueray problem's

Of a "million" units (more or less) of each sold, there l bound to be defective ones. The old saying "99% of the people complaining equals 1% of the population," applies here.

Its odd that I'm seeing so many different news vendors continue with this MS hiccup. What I'm saying is, they seem to be dragging it. Some have even, repeated the same news. Now with Sony, CEO releases statement saying only 1% affected and that was the end of it. Could I be wrong or maybe I'm saying out of fanboism. There, I admitted it.

It's how this generation looks to go, somehow the PS3.5 is the media darling and any tiny slip of the Xbox One is going to be jumped on for at least a couple years, while the PlayStation camp will get passes.

It's called...RROD last gen=Hardware problem this gen. I'm glad they're getting this attention, so they can 1) Lower the price 2) Recall and fix any inventory in the stores that are not sold and fix them and 3) Extend the warranty. Have faith in your product and so will the customer.

While I do appreciate the XBox issues as being newsworthy and that, judging by the number of posts here, WPCentral is frequented by gamers, I would like to know how game consoles managed to co-opt the Windows PHONE Central site and Twitter feed. Slow news day on the phone front?

Windows Phone Central has really become a site for fans and news of the entire Microsoft ecosystem, a large reason I still frequent even with a certain crack reporter finding any chance to be negative about the Xbox brand.

I strongly agree with supporting the whole MS ecosystem. I just thought I'd throw that out there as the lines between products blur and we're inundated with news about game consoles.

I've been an MS evangelist since 1990, even through the WTF years. I confess, I'm not a gamer anymore. Both my mom and I sprained thumbs playing the original Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda and I just can't afford the addiction in my schedule these days. I do want an XBox (I think Assassin's Creed would be my excuse/bane), but my own daughter is totally into PC-based MMORPGs and doesn't crave the new box. It's #2 on my list, right below the Surface Pro 2.

Now, speaking of reporters/journalists who have a problem being objective... you might find this article interesting. It explains a whole lot about what gets reported and what does not: http://www.cultofmac.com/255618/how-apples-blacklist-manipulates-the-press/

WP Central is the first and so far the only app I've ever purchased. Happy about it. Love the atmosphere here at the comment section. Too little of hater and plenty of love. On other forums especially iOS you see too much of haters. And WP is my number one source of technology, over the engadget which i was the fan of till they announced lumia 920 as the smartphone of the year, which I happily having now. But after i bought the phone I became a regular here and sometimes not reading engadget or the rest for weeks. It's a live hub here. All Windows and Microsoft news are here and people are funny and nice to each other. :)

Also if not for this website, my whole family wouldn't have WP phones now. And be enjoying it. Looking for 8.1 update to see where it's gonna bring us, the only thing im sure is that this lumia 920 I'll keep for me for me and never ever resell.

I agree, Andre, the people here are nicer. We may not always agree, but I haven't seen any name-calling or personal insults. I guess the Apple trolls (worms?) haven't found this place yet.

And like you, I've got a 920 (red). It's a fantastic little machine!

I find the variety of news on wpcentral welcoming and essential as windows and windows phone will all soon share one ecosystem and I assume Xbox along with it.

To put it into context, it would be very strange to have an iOS or Android site that ignored parts of their ecosystem not related to mobile phones.

I come here because I have a Windows Phone (Lumia 520), which I like quite a bit. I've abandoned the rest of the Microsoft ecosystem, so I personally don't care about XBOX, Surfaces or Windows on the desktop, but realize others here do so it's not that big of a deal, so long as it doesn't take over WP news, tips and reviews.

I also find people on the (I think it's called) Talk Mobile Network to be generally good people overall. iMore and Android Central the people are fine. Quite often I read more positive things towards WP on iMore then on any other website.

That's because MS will never provide "facts." Does anyone really know what percentage of XBOX 360s failed. I heard somewhere around 33%.  But there are no hard facts. MS won't release anything that makes them look bad, hence no numbers for RT and XBOX MUSIC Subscribers and so forth. Companies always release numbers that make them look good.

Anoter negative article from Michael. Do we really need unsubstatiated negative comments like this? He seems to do this quite often. We don't need total fanboys running the show here, but one of their reporters making comments like this is beyond the pale.

Well, total fanboys is what we got. This is such a pro Microsoft and pro Nokia site there is little objectivity. And most members just nod in agreement at everything being written, its often hard to swallow. There is hope it might become a bit more real.

In which case how can you say one is doing better than the other when you only have one set of numbers? Sony has had 7 days longer to get a response prepared. The sky is not falling.

Alls well for me. Got my fingers crossed. I'm sure Microsoft will treat those affected well. I still have Gen 1 360 (bought on day one) I use occasionally running strong.

Sorry, but I can't resist: 'gamin console' (1st paragraph).

Also 'effected' should be 'affected' (2nd paragraph), 'intent' should be 'intend' (same sentence) and there is a missing closing quote at the end of the paragraph.

Have both the Xbox One and PS 4 (knock on wood) no issues with either so far. The only frustration the 4 hours it took for the PS4 to install its update. Xbox update ten minutes max.

What's the OS like on the PS4? It's the only thing holding me back from having one next to my XB1 as the PS3 OS just felt awkward and unfinished to me.

I have had 2 Xbox Ones on the house already. Both had drive problems. Gamestop replaced the first one. Xbox Support want my credit card so they could put a $500 hold on it before they would send a replacement. They thought they had me on hold and yelled to someone else in the room they had someone the line who was on their second broken machine and started laughing. I told them I was still on the line and they got semi serious and said that if I did not want to send them my Xbox and wait 2 weeks for them to refurbish it or pony up another $500 that they would release when they got my broken one back I should ho back to my retailer. Gamestop now has a third one on order for me. Not sure it will be the day one edition I pre ordered, but maybe.

Mine works fine *crosses fingers and knocks on wood*, but my buddy has the dead Kinect problem. Maybe not as widespread but still a thing, just read the forum at the Xbox site. Apparently some kinects just stop working and the Xbox says it's unplugged even though it's fully plugged in and was just working fine.

I'm a big Fan of MS Products and Services. I just traded in my XBOX 360 to get an XBOX ONE. Killer Instinct was the only game I was looking forward to on the Next Gen this holiday. But I never really trusted the Hardware on that thing and now even less.

There was an article on Kotaku on how many people were having issues with PS4 and XBOX ONES. PS4 emails were in the dozen, while XBOX ONE were in the hundreds. I really don't understand why MS doesn't just use quality parts on their XBOXES. It would be alright if they charged a reasonable price, but they charge a Premium for CRAP!

On another note, AMAZON has "NOT FOR SALE XBOX ONES: For replacement only." Gee that right there tells you what to expect. Am I a Fanboy? Definitely...Sony on the Hardware side and MS on the Services side. But right now, the main reason I wanted to go XBOX ONE (XBOX MUSIC VIDEOS THRU MUSIC PASS is apparently not supported on the XBOX). Also, it's a dollar cheaper to rent a movie on PSN than it is on XBOX VIDEO. See for yourself, just rented Man of Steel.

Because they wanted to pack a +200€ camera without a significantly higher pricepoint.

Also, as far as hadware goes you can't compare MS to Sony.

Man, you have so much bad luck. What I hate about these threads is the fanboyism. What does it matter who has a larger percentage of defective hardware. When it happens to you it sucks either way :(

I expected some issues on either new systems and sure enough, there are some. That's not really news... I will get my Xbox early next year. If you like the PS4, go get it. Do we really have to constantly fight over everything? Oh, and I hate Google.... And Apple :)

Lol I agree with 100% of what yoi said. Will also get my xboxone at the beginning of next year, although my reason is slightly different. Where I'm from (Angola) the Xbox one won't be released for a while so I have to increase my chances in getting a non defective unit, because getting it replaced means sending it overseas...

I guess that is why the console is designed so that the BD drive can be replaced without voiding the warranty.

No matter, I have been playing Zoo Tycoon and Battlefield 4 nonstop. And barring the obvious Battlefield post-launch woes, my experience has been flawless.

Surely you aren't suggesting that resolution is the most important aspect. I would argue that frame rate is. Something the PS4 is having issues with. It matters not as I own one eventually anyway.

Stop being a fanboy.

I HATE optical drives! They are usually the cause of most of my technical issues ever... That being said, my Xbox One is workings just fine and I am liking more than I thought I would. Lots of potential in this one. Can't wait to see what they have in store for us.

Who uses the drive anyways? Download my games and stream everything else... Mine could be defective and I probably won't find out for months!

Considering most ISPs, particularly in the US, have a bandwidth cap. I imagine alot. Nevermind the horrid internet infrastructure in the US would make downloading 30+ gigabyte games a nightmare.

Plus those without a constant internet connection.

They are giving a free game to people that got a bad Xbox One. Would still be frustrated, but the free game wouldn't hurt.

1% of a Million, 10,000 PS4 sounds like a lot of failure and you know Sony is lying about 1%. It's probably more like 10%. Now compare that to what I understand is 7 different videos of the Disk drive failure happening on the Xbone. Sounds like the Xbox One is off to a great start.

The internet makes it look as though Xbone had a vast amount of failure rates beyond the PS4. If you use geekbyte or appygeek, you'll see they're regurgitating the same news over and over again, some even repeating. Sick!

Um you mean "mess". Anyway if MS had vast amounts of issues, do you think they can afford to give away free day one game plus receive a new console? Also, have you seen YouTube on how easy it is to fix the grinding blue ray? http://youtu.be/pDoDqTaIwIc

The average person. You know, considering most of the US does not have a reliable internet connection and/or bandwidth caps.

I do, and I know a lot of people who do.  Why?  Because it's a tangile peice of media you can hold in your hand. It's something you actually own. It's something you can easiy access just in case.  When you buy digital media you actually own nothing.  You share the same one's and zero's with thousands of other people. Why do you think companies are pushing digital media?  It makes them more money and they have to give you less.

I've only played a BluRay movie and the only sounds mine has made are normal loading sounds like most drives do. I'll have to wait and test out a game to see if anything else arises.

My friends drive bust the other night, he's now waiting for a delivery guy to pick it up, but MS told him they will only be replacing the drive not the XB1.. He not a happy bunny, refurbished already.. I would've argued with them but he's a push over like that.

That is standard practice. If you buy a 2500$ appliance, we don't replace it, we send a technician to repair it.

If you want a new replacement you have to go to the dealer and throw a bitch fit. And even then, most dealers will laugh at you and tell you to use your warranty.

I would say 98% of childish debate over something that doesn't matter i.e. the so called "console.wars" is fuelled by the press. Only news they tend to publish is bad news... If the press stopped all this "The black on the PS4 is a deeper black than Xbox One but the xbox one has a better new plastic smell" or "if you drop the xbox one in a bath of water whilst sat in it, you may live as the power brick is external, Sonys death machine would kill you outright with power going into the machine in full, we've asked Sony to comment and will update when we get a response on how many suicides will be at the hands of a PS4 in a bath a water"

I have both and they are both awesome. They are slightly different approaches but seriously they're both nice machines. They've also been mostly ON since their launch days. No problems and they run quiet. I've been asked which one is better and all I can say is either one that does what you want it to. Both are excellent.

My Xbox One is working 100% fine, save for a hiccup during the initial update where I had to restart my console.

I would say the ps4 is selling extremely well while the x1 is selling well. The reason being that Sony sold over 1 million units in just Canada and the US, the x1 sold the same amount but across 13 countries. Wait till the ps4 hits those 11 countries and the UK.

I am having a a a problem with my xbox one i have notice today its stop not allowing me to play any dvds or blue ray films how can I fix this ? ,
