Microsoft completes the family, releases Xbox One SmartGlass for Windows 8.1

Xbox One SmartGlass

Microsoft today released the Xbox One SmartGlass app for Windows Phone, but lo and behold the company has also pushed out the same solution on Windows 8.1. Should you have the next-gen console on pre-order and are eagerly awaiting its arrival by getting your home and technology ready, you'll definitely want to have this app downloaded.

Just like the Windows Phone counterpart, Xbox One SmartGlass brings the following features to Windows 8.1 hardware:

  • Navigate your Xbox One console using your device’s keyboard and touch
  • Control your media and set top box with the SmartGlass remote control
  • Browse the web on your TV using your mobile device
  • Enhance what you are watching or playing with SmartGlass companions
  • Increase performance with faster connections and reliability
  • Search, browse, and pin content to play on your Xbox One console
  • Track achievements, get game help, message friends, and watch game DVR clips

Xbox One SmartGlass

You can grab Xbox One SmartGlass from the Windows Store (requires Windows 8.1 - also available on the Windows Phone Store if you're on a smartphone, QR code below). Thanks to everyone who tipped us!

Is this what it feels like to have the "three screens" vision finally coming together?

theefman says:

No, that will only happen when Xbox on Windows Phone is given the same priority as the console.

kinpin2131 says:

Are you willing to pay $50  for a windows phone game?

saket87 says:

Will it have quality as a AAA title and playable in all systems then maybe yes

Fellipe Abib says:

I would like this app integraded just like smartglass for Xbox 360.
I install it and it show an app, while the smartglass for 360 is show on game hub.

pavvento says:

As someone who doesn't play mobile games I prefer it as a stand alone app, but see why others would want it in games. Maybe MS thinks it'll be used more if it is in the app list instead of in games?

aathavale says:

Good point. I think you may be right. They arent selling the Xbox One as a gaming only device.

Wael Hasno says:

I have to agree there, sometimes I forget that my games are listed under "Games"

Rug says:

Are you saying there's a reason to go into Game hub on Windows 8.*?

peachy001 says:

On, semi off topic question. Can I download the day one patch before release day? This will prevent hug server overload, and I could pop it on to a memory stick.

pavvento says:

I don't think so as I believe the intention is to prevent anyone from using it before launch.

The link is for NextGen WIndows Store app...

ncxcstud says:

Yep, I noticed that too m_umair ;)

fpostrow says:

Yup, wrong link there guys.

Can't download in windows 8.1 get error 0x80240436

erzhik says:

Is it true that you can power up Xbox One with Smartglass? If yes, about freaking time.

ddewar10 says:

I really hope you are right. That would be great.

karelj says:

Curious...is that a better option for you than just saying 'XBox On' ??

TechFreak1 says:

Yes it is, what about people who can't speak?... Personally I still find it awkward talking to my phone lol.

Now I'm glad they released it before the IOS and android versions! :D

Bob101910 says:

Perfect timing. Spotify trial just ran out and I needed another green colored app to replace it.

leotoma says:

Don't know if you're joking or not, but I do have the same problem loads of times. My home screen is very organized color-wise. I totally flip out when an app changes its color and f%ck$ up the harmony. OCD much...

mkrenegades says:

wpc, ty for the heads up.

Microsoft actually prioritized WP along with W8. Hell must've frozen over

fpostrow says:

So, I download the XB1 Smartglass app, get through the activation and setup and the brief tutorial but get this .... IT WON'T CONNECT TO MY XBOX!. I thought the XB! Had widi and an improved Kinect that would work before the Xbox was unbowed. Jeez I am so returning this as soon as it's delivered and I try it out. Oh well, back to waiting for my tracking numbers to update.

jargonz says:

As the name indicates, the Xbox One SmartGlass app is designed to connect to an Xbox One, which has not been released yet. Why would you expect the Xbox One SmartGlass app to connect to an Xbox 360?

biodeena says:

I cant download it. It says my phone is not updated.

MrTechRat says:

Still waiting for games to actually use this feature.

biodeena says:

I cant download it. It says my phone is not updated. What shall I do?

toca79 says:

What phone is the one in the pic?

toca79 says:

Are you sure?

Never seen an orange one...

el-ojo says:

Man, sometimes I wish SONY made the XBOX and MS it's software and services. That thing is way too fricking BIG!

TechFreak1 says:

I don't suppose you are aware of the recent issues with the ps4? :P. The xbox one is, for some of us nostalgic as it reminds us of the old VHS / Beta Max days.

el-ojo says:

Yes, I am and know none of them involve overheating. It doesn't really matter. Sony just makes sexier and better hardware period. Out of everything MS makes, the XBOX thing is the unsexiest of them all, to me, a sexy ZUNE HD owner.

Don't give me that they need that extra space. The PS3 had the power brick inside as well and XBOX 360 outside, and yet if it wasn't 3RRODs, it was one BIG RED ONE! Sorry, I just really hate that everything about it is just humongous. The box, the Kinect, and that 19th century power brick and cords. We're in 2013, not 1900s here.

Ushae says:

Cant wait, 2 more days!

Mik29 says:

has anyone managed to get this app to connect to their XOne yet, mine just says no console found and input the IP address and that doesnt work either. The WP8 works fine though??? help please

edit. Nevermind, i changed the console to a wired network and not the wireless and it now works. dunno why.
