Microsoft updates News, Maps, Travel, Sport and Finance for Windows 8

S7

Microsoft is pushing out updates for its News, Maps, Travel, Sport and Finance apps on Windows 8. Numerous features have been included in the latest releases, so what's new for consumers?

The News app sports a customise option that enables users to add RSS feeds to the top stories section of the app. The ability to pin custom feeds on the start screen is also presently available. Custom feeds are displayed much like other curated feeds, but unoptimised feeds will open up in a  web browser.

The Windows 8 Maps app, which is powered by Bing, has been bumped to a new version to include an improved local search option for users. Categories are displayed as local search options when searches are performed within the app. The settings area also sports options to track location automatically and show the bird's eye view.

Finance now features a new tools section. A mortgage calculator, retirement planner and currency converter each available for quick and convenient access. Finally, Travel and Sport have both been updated, but it's reported that only bug fixes are likely to be included.

It's also been noted that the News app now displays more localised headlines. Be sure to shout out in the comments if you've noticed anything we've missed. You can download the News, Maps, Sport, Finance and Travel appsfrom the Windows Store.

Love it, can't wait for more updates. I really love the idea of pinning.

Now, if they only enable browsing through the news headlines from the pinned app without going in. Also add music controls to the pinned apps, and add ability to keep videos playing inside of pinned app. Just in the name of options.

adrian1338 says:

Music controls overlay in every app - even the desktop

inteller says:

well now WPcentral should construct a feed that plays well with the news app.  right now the only option is d-bag winsupersite.

FFugue says:

That would be awesome!! And if we want to comment on something we can just click on open in ie.

sepatown says:

The Bing Map app now includes Skype integration a huge feature everyone seems to have missed.

aerosmillie says:

What kind of skype integration?.....oh I see it, on local restaurants and businesses it gives you the option to call using skype and takes you straight into the app.

sepatown says:

If you search for local businesses, e.g. banks, results with phone numbers included will have a phone button when you click on them. Tapping this button opens Skype with the number included for you to call directly from Skype.

inteller says:

too bad the practicality of using skype on a tablet is lost on this.

adrian1338 says:

How does bing maps and skype integrate with each other?

I am scared of Windows 8 app updates. The last update corrupted the People/Mail/Messaging/Calendar app set and I can't download them anymore :(

inteller says:

you are an exception not the norm.

Snazrael says:

You've tried to uninstall them all? Then search the Store and reinstall them. If that doesn't work you could also try to delete the directory yourself at Local Disk\Users\[username]\AppData\microsoft.windowscommunicationapps...\ and then try to reinstall them from the store again.

Aaron M says:

Wow, thats the first I've heard of that.  Try uninstalling them.  If all else fails, use one of the Windows 8 recovery options.

I agree, I am the exception, which is why it sucks :( have tried MS support articles and MS Answers (where I also happen to be a Community Star). Its ironic that I help others solve their own windows problems on that forum but not my own.

mdscj4 says:

Where are you getting your sources from for these app updates? Microsoft's website clearly lays out the changelog for each of their apps. Here's Travel for example: http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/app/travel/9e2610f3-bad2-41cd-b7...

Reason #263 to avoid the verge

Mouthsmasher says:

Can I uninstall that useless travel app off of my RT device yet? That's about the only update I really care about. It's the most useless app on there, it takes up over 100MB, and it doesn't have an uninstall option.

sepatown says:

Yes, it does have an uninstall option. Swipe down on its tile and you'll see the uninstall option.

Mouthsmasher says:

Is it there now?! When I got my surface two months ago, this app was one of two or three that had no uninstall option when I swipped down on the app. Further online investigation at the time revealed there was no way to uninstall it. I'll check it out when I get home.

Hector1van says:

I got rid of it the first week.

Aaron M says:

I don't have my Surface in front of me, but I'm pretty positive that app can be uninstalled.

SocalBrian says:

I don't know about RT but I had no problem uninstalling  all the Bing apps on Windows 8 for x86.

penetronn says:

Wish we had these on windows phone 8

Al_2 says:

Offline reading for the News app is a nice addition. It only seems to work on the main page articles though. I wish they'd make a News app like this for WP8!

busngabb says:

Does anyone actually use these apps opposed to just using the internet? The apps are slow and clunky and while they look nice, no one is really going to use them over going onto the internet, are they?

penetronn says:

Believe it or not the live tile stories usually suck me in and I use them.

Hector1van says:

I use it nightly. But I liked it better when it let me scroll, now you can only turn the page.

FFugue says:

I use them everyday. I don't know what computer you have, but on my surface pro they are really fast. And they are much better looking and easy to read than most websites.

dukrem says:

I use news every day, it is by far the best aggregation of local and world news using a variety of sources.

Very nice work. These apps just set the bar again.
Even the "fataly flawed" search in the Map app has been fixed.

NIST says:

The news app is great. I especially love the "week in pictures" in the News section and the "panoramas" in the Travel section, which look gorgeous on the Surface Pro.
The Bing apps overall are just very well done.

Someone can explain to me why I can´t share a simple news from the News app to the People app? Is a feature that I´ve be waiting since they one!

Zeeshan360 says:

Lol .. Same here
Don't know why the hell can't I share news to my FB , twitter ..
MS Fail !!

rocketboy says:

Does People to Maps work now so that if you click on a contact address you can actually see it on the map?

infinidim says:

Looks like Microsoft are now really getting their act together now. Really like all the latest updates.

kullkid92x says:

YESSS :D man no one pats Microsoft on the back for these awesome apps, the sports app just got more detail per game/ per player very cool

and the Weather app for example, it is a very well and very detailed app i love it :)

very good updates, and some UI changes here and there, cant complain and im using a mouse :)

edjr07 says:

I would love for some.of this eyegasm type app on my windows phone.

AskaLangly says:

Any way to turn off Breaking News? Saw the Boston explosion topic appear like crazy, and it just interferes with daily life. To be honest, I like the older version of the News app.
