Microsoft US cuts pricing of its Surface Pro 2 range of tablets by up to $200

Surface Pro 2

Microsoft has reduced its pricing for the Surface Pro 2 range of Windows 8 tablets in the US, knocking off $200 on each model. This price alteration follows a similar cut in the UK, where Microsoft slashed the price tags on the tablets by £150. While the move is due to the upcoming Surface Pro 3 launch, the previous generation hardware are still worth picking up when discounted.

This deal follows the education discount we covered earlier in the year. The Surface Pro 2 comes with a 10.6-inch full-HD screen, Intel Core i5 CPU (fourth-generation), 4 GB RAM on the 64/128 GB storage models, 8 GB RAM on the 256 and 512 GB variants, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

  • 64GB: $799 (was $899)
  • 128GB: $899 (was $999)
  • 256GB: $1,099 (was $1,299)
  • 512GB: $1,599 (was $1,799)

Will you be looking to pick one up with this offer in place? Let us know in the comments.

chillteki says:

I'm willing to sell my 256GB SP2 to buy a SP3 for sure :p I think it's the most exciting pc microsoft announced yet

MatchAttax08 says:

CeX gives good prices... Or you can sell it on eBay. Beware of eBay... If you're not a frequent seller you have to wait 21 days for your money. To try to avoid this give a tracking number

chillteki says:

Thanks! Didn't know that about ebay :) I'll check out CeX

DWTrump says:

Yep, I sold mine on eBay last week and printed the shipping labels from within eBay. It autofills the tracking number and you get your money (via PayPal) faster. Had my money within 2 days of the package being delivered to the buyer.

badMojo69 says:

I just sold mine for $800.  Now I have to wait 14 days for my $$$$$$$

However I am passing on the SP3 for now and going with the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 (I never did use the pen on the P2).  I have the strange feeling the we'll see a SP3 with a Intel M cpu in the next 6 months.

Samsung is giving a $50 Vudu credit (I Vudu all the time) and $25 in Play $'s...it was just to good of a deal to pass up as it brings the divice cost down to $475.

Rico says:

The Samsung is a good device, but I'm curious what your needs are to switch to a different platform completely.

Snowman81 says:

Please post what you think of the Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 once you get it.  :)

coolbreeze78 says:

I'll go. Got one from Costco and returned it the next day. The screen looks like a screen door. The pentile is horribly noticeable. My 2014 Note 10.1, with the same amount of pixels on a smaller screen is way better than the 12.2.

Dare2Blink says:

Am I missing something? It looks like they are knocking off 100 $ not 200.

adrian1338 says:

Well it says up to and the 256 version has a knock off by 200$

andrewb65 says:

That old sales trick! Up to 70% discount on selected items, subject to availability ;)

On Each model they said...  What?

Aashish13 says:

Any rumors of the surface mini?

DVELOPinc says:

Never existed. Go back to sleep. /s

neo158 says:

It does exist, they have units waiting for the Modern UI version of Office before it's released.

Rico says:

It's rumored that it didn't differentiate enough from similar devices, and they're holding it for the Windows 9/Metro Office launch.

anirban130 says:

They are very expensive to our standards I mean for indian.... Now I m thinking how much would surface pro 3 would cost in India? I would better opt for an alienware laptop...

adrian1338 says:

The one for 6000$ ?

Lol let them launch surface in India first... And then think about the price....

jfivieght says:

Thought I paid $999 for my 128gb surface pro 2? Was the processor bumped up?

TLRtheory says:

Yes, actually... but not significantly

Don't think there was a 32 GB version of the Surface Pro 2 was there? And the 128 GB was $999 also I thought?

Rich Edmonds says:

Heh, fixed the storage list :-)

Well, it shows $899 (was $999) surface pro 2 128GB, >> Microsoft.com

I'll NEVER purchase a Surface anything. I love windows but the Surface series is way to overpriced for under powered specs and features.

Once again being charged for mobility and dated innovation.

stephen_az says:

...and you needed to get that off your chest for any particular reason? If you don't want it then don't buy it. I doubt anyone cares much why you do or do not make purchasing decisions.

Jakez98 says:

I totally agree. It is way overpriced for its hardware specs.

We're basically paying for a premium price tag for the VaporMg casing and the kickstand. Not worth it.

jomarr says:

Underpowered specs? You mean the latest Intel Generation of processors?

Dated innovation? Yep because after the Surface was announced multiple PC manufacturers started having these types of flexible laptops.

You can't call this a dated innovation when TIME and Forbes just called the laptop-tablet hybrid the future of computing. The Surface Pro is ahead of its time NOT dated. T'was released early in the game but not too early. This is the future and there is nothing dated with the Specs. What will you do with a 10.1 inch Quad HD Display? Full HD is pretty much great for the screen size of the 2. I really don't get the rant you're saying. There is nothing underpowered and dated with the Surface Pro 2, it's still a solid machine that can compete with some of the flagship laptops.

Rug says:

I can justify an awful lot and I consider these pricey considering that there are tons of options for 1/3 the price, but similar spec. These Surfaces are the Ferrari of PC.

kingkoopa09 says:

Then what do u call a MacBook then, u don't get tablet support with those, no pen or touch, and even less compatibility, worse screen,

tan2000 says:

+1
I have a SP1 and when i tried touching my girlfriend's £2000 MacBook Pro's screen nothing happened, so bummed.

It is priced well, but personally I do not think Microsoft should have lowered the prices. Apple never lowered its prices and MacBook Air 13" is still probably the most desired ultraportable laptop out there.

If I didn't need full desktop software's(not apps) then I would have bought the Surface, now those are extremely under priced for what they can do, full USB, memory card, external display, integral keyboard, kickstand...

TLRtheory says:

Anyone who's understanding of technology isn't good enough to realize why these tablets aren't overpriced should take a look at this article: http://verytechnical.wordpress.com/2014/06/12/surface-lineup-isnt-overpr...

JotaKa says:

Great article. Thanks for the link.

That is definitely a good article on the true value of owning a Surface Pro vs any other cheap ultrabook. I can't wait to get a Surface Pro 3 once Microsoft knocks the 128gb model down ab $200.

Mark Richey says:

There are Surface 2s not Pro

And $900 + $6.49 in amazon

stephen_az says:

Not very good at the whole math thing are you guys? You have configurations that do not exist and prices that don't match existing configurations.  Care to try again?

TLRtheory says:

Nah, already got a Surface Pro 2. I'm in it for the SP3.

Really wish they'd have waited to do this... now it'll be harder to sell my 128gb SP2 for $800ish.

Jazmac says:

I'm putting my mint 64gig Surface RT with type cover for 250.00 to help with costs for my new one. You should be able to get your price though.

All well and good cutting the price of old stock....but they really ought to think about bundling the tablet and keyboard on the surface 3 instead if they want to shift sales up a gear.  I was on the verge of ordering the 3 but frankly I'll give it a few months until common sense prevails in Redmond.  The surface 3 is a very ordinary, very average tablet without the keyboard

MatchAttax08 says:

The surface 3 doesn't exist

Sorry @MatchAttax08....the Surface PRO 3 is a very ordinary, very average tablet without the keyboard.  Better?  :-)

wpguy says:

No, very average would be a tablet that can only run apps.

phasar says:

Played with the SP2 today at Best Buy. Super fast, but too bulky and heavy for my tastes.

rollindadice says:

Heavy you say? All that power and portability and you think it's too heavy? Tell me which other product gives you same and weighs less....enlighten me

phasar says:

I might as well carry a laptop, power, portability, and more importantly a larger screen and better keyboard.

MERCDROID says:

Don't be a dick. No one is saying that it's not a capable machine. But, it is bulky. Hell, it's a 2-pound, 10-inch tablet

lemonsteveo says:

Really tempted, since I already have the RT and type cover.

neo158 says:

I have an uncle in Australia who has a first gen Surface Pro and he loves it more than his old Laptop.

eshy says:

I really need to upgrade my Pro gen 1 to an 8GB model, but for $200 more I can get the SP3, so I'll probably get that. The screen size is too small for my real work on the Pro/Pro2

jomarr says:

I really wanna get this and buy myself a 23 inch display. Ain't nothing better than an all in one device. No more plugging in your tablet in your PC to copy those files/music/movies.. Just remove the type cover and you're set!

Still thinking about it.. Maybe in December if I can get the 256GB i5 version for at least 200 more less. :D

lubbalots says:

Out of my price range.

Sunofabob says:

That's still pretty easy expensive

WPC App via Nexus 5.

Sunofabob says:

Omit 'easy' ^^^

WPC App via Nexus 5.

Wished they'd cut the price of Surface 2.. Lol. Really want one of those...

RackDaddy says:

Had to look at my receipt from November to verify this..  I paid $1299 for the 256GB with an education discount.  Didn't realize that I received such a good deal!  :D

bulls96 says:

Isn't that $100 less not $290

DWTrump says:

Phew...I figured this was coming, and just sold my Pro 2/256GB last week on eBay for a decent price as a bundle (about 2x what Best Buy was offering for trade in).

Mark Richey says:

As an owner of the original Surface RT, the size of these is to small for me. I am looking to replace my laptop. Currently 15". So I am waiting for the Surface Pro 3 for many reasons. I am likely looking to pick up an i7, with 256gb.

ortizang says:

I can't afford it!

TechFreak1 says:

Set aside 10 to 5 per week for the model you want to get, it will take awhile but in the end you will have a nice nest egg to spend :p and may pick up a bargain at Christmas.

2007H3 says:

Incredible machine. But MS wrote down $900 million on the Surface last year, virtually leaving the street price untouched. There are now too many Win 8 hybrids out that compete on price and specs for the surface to be demanding such a premium.

rollindadice says:

It would be great if the SP3 would be bundled with Year Free Unlimited Skype minutes like when you purchase the Surface Pro 2.I'll still wait a bit for SP3 prices to drop down

mrzees says:

That's the only way I'll be buying the SP3 for that type of money. 1 Yr Premium Skype together with 200GB OneDrive Storage. Microsoft spoilt me with their Surface 2 offering. Sweeten that deal :) Well that or if I get a pay raise.

rahul.sharma says:

Skype doesn't offer Premium anymore

Does it has window 8.1?

MJS9 says:

Still rocking my SP1 128Gb. If it skipped a beat, I'd upgrade. But I can't, because it doesn't.

Joe920 says:

Article still has an error: it says $200 off on all models, but that's only on the 256GB and 512GB models, the others are $100 off.

Lets hope with the invention of new technology, these hybrids would get cheaper

neodoru says:

Oh $hit, I'm trying to sell my sp2, dammit

smoheath says:

Me too, this is terrible news for us.

Use GRADUATION coupon code it will knock off another $100

JohnStrk says:

What about Surface 2?  I don't want to pay more than $299 :)

Nope, still too expensive.

BTW, I did get a chance to get a hands-on with a SP3 at a Best Buy, and it was very nice. It's super thin and I couldn't tell any weight difference in my hands between that and the RT-version.

The unit on display didn't have its fan running and it was very cool to the touch, just like an RT. The power connector went in very easily as well. The type cover took me a few minutes to get used to, but found it serviceable.

The pen holder, I discovered, is NOT permanently attached- it uses double-sided tape to attach to the keyboard cover. So that means if you didn't like that silly loop on the side messing up the streamlined look of your SP3, then you'll have the option of not attaching it.

The adjustable kickstand is a winner as well...it easily adjusted to whatever angle I chose and held it. It's action is also not as stiff as the videos make it appear to be- it's just a nice, smooth action. Time will tell on its durability.

$200 discount isn't enough t make me buy it when I know Surface 3 is about to come out. Half price yes, I would buy two.

StevoPhilo says:

Not even the original SP was half-off. The only reason the original was discounted so heavily is cause Microsoft made way too many units and expected higher sales. This time around they didn't, so they wont be doing cutting the prices by much

$799 better get the surface 3
