MS confirms front-facing cameras with Skype support

Just one day after spotting an Asus WP7 phone with what looked like a front-facing camera, Windows Phone NZ is now reporting that Microsoft has confirmed at Tech Ed New Zealand that Mango phones will indeed come equipped with them.  Furthermore, it was also said that Skype integration will be coming soon and that it will make use of them.

Front-facing cameras have been one of the features that users have requested the most and we've seen hints in the developer tools before.  Now that it has become a reality, will we see them on all, most or some of the new Mango handsets?  With Microsoft's semi-standardization of hardware across manufacturers, we are willing to bet that most of them will.  It will be an integral part of WP7 competing with the allure of Apple's Facetime application.

I never used Video calling other than to see what its like YEARS ago.But with Skype support that might change as i tend to skype with the GF and friends!Doing this over Wi-Fi and being able to walk about my house would be pretty handy lol

DavidinCT says:

It would be even better if it could be done over 3G/4G and Wi-Fi

Is this really news? I know all the WP sites are reporting this like it is but I thought this was known a long time ago. The dev tools don't just have hints, the Mango API has had full support for FFC from the beginning.

is this is really important news dufest.

I don't think it had ever been officially stated. Besides, people like me don't have access to Mango APIs to see that it had support for FFCs and them not being programmers usually means they wouldn't know even if they had access unless someone informs them. Additionally, part of the news is that Skype will support the FFC, which I'm not sure if Skype on other platforms do (if I remember, the Evo 4G didn't support it a few months ago).
