Nokia Collection for Windows Phone
When Nokia entered the Windows Phone market, one of their strategies to attract customers was to provide exclusive apps and games for their Lumia Windows Phones. While other Windows Phone manufacturers offer similar collections of apps, the Nokia Collection is by far the largest offering.
From Xbox Live game titles to camera apps to utilities to news apps, the Nokia Collection adds to the attraction the Lumia Windows Phones have.
As of December 2012, Nokia has over 50 exclusive apps and games available to those with Lumia phones.
Nokia has published an update to the Windows Phone Store for its Smart Cam app. Debuting on the Lumia 925, Nokia's camera suite is the next step in photography while on the move, enabling consumers to set the app as the default camera lens and then edit the snaps taken by the impressive Pureview shooter.
We’re currently undergoing the second nasty Xbox Windows Phone release drought of the year (though really it’s not so bad if you have joy in your heart). During the first drought back in December and January, Nokia and EA came to the rescue by releasing Xbox games like Flight Control Rocket and iBomber Defense as Nokia exclusives. It didn’t help non-Nokia owners, but at least some of us had new games to play, and eventually those same games should be available to everybody.
Today Nokia and EA once again light one of Xbox Windows Phone’s darkest hours by publishing another highly anticipated exclusive: FIFA 13. Considering that the only other soccer titles available are the buggy Real Soccer and overtly greedy Real Soccer 2013, FIFA 13 should be a breath of fresh air for footy fans. Just keep in mind you’ll need a Windows Phone 8 Nokia device with 1 GB of RAM to play it.
Nokia has pushed out a new app a few weeks ago, which evidently received an update today that is simply called Accessory Shop. The app helps you find Nokia Lumia accessories for your Windows Phone right from your device plus it can alert you to deals.
The app is really just a front-end for the Amazon.com store, but it is wrapped up in a nice little user interface.
If we had to name one of our top apps, at least on a Nokia Windows Phone, Creative Studio would be up there. That’s because we take a lot of pics with our Lumia, so it makes sense we’d want to tidy up things a bit and maybe even play around with some different effects.
Today, Creative Studio received a minor update from 188.8.131.52 to 184.108.40.206 and as far as we can tell, there is no discernable difference in terms of features, but it we had to guess Nokia fixed or tweaked something that was causing some issues.
Back at Mobile World Congress, we showed a new app that was being developed by Nokia called JobLens. If you thing that sounds a lot like City Lens, their other famous app, you’d be right and the two share more than just a common name.
JobLens is a new project from Nokia that where they team up with LinkedIn, Indeed, Salary.com and Zillow to help you find jobs immediately around your current location. The app ties into your LinkedIn account (or Facebook, Twitter, etc.) to create a “network” and then finds jobs that may be of interest to you.
Nokia has bumped the NFC Writer app for Lumia Windows Phones to version 220.127.116.11. The first change we've noticed is the product link for grabbing more tags off Amazon now works in the UK (we've noticed the app crashed when selecting the link). That said, there have been reports that the app is continuing to cause problems for consumers with crash reports coming in regarding the purchase link. Looks like Nokia has to have a deeper look.
Near the end of 2011, Nokia and Electronic Arts announced a partnership. Nokia would publish new EA Xbox Windows Phone games exclusively for Lumia devices. The deal included EA’s subsidiaries Chillingo and PopCap as well. It took a while for the first exclusive to show up: Mirror’s Edge in July 2012. After that, the floodgates opened as more and more EA games arrived on our platform.
Nokia has today released a fairly substantial update for its Nokia Chat Beta application for Windows Phone 8. Version 1.1 of the beta includes numerous bug fixes, but also introduces new features and improvements to existing functionality. We last looked at Nokia Chat when the beta program was extended to cover more markets.
