Nokia Collection for Windows Phone

When Nokia entered the Windows Phone market, one of their strategies to attract customers was to provide exclusive apps and games for their Lumia Windows Phones.  While other Windows Phone manufacturers offer similar collections of apps, the Nokia Collection is by far the largest offering.

From Xbox Live game titles to camera apps to utilities to news apps, the Nokia Collection adds to the attraction the Lumia Windows Phones have.

As of December 2012, Nokia has over 50 exclusive apps and games available to those with Lumia phones.

Back when the Nokia Lumia 925 was announced, we brought you an early look at Car App, a forthcoming app from Nokia that was enabled via NFC and used in conjunction with their wireless CR-200 car mount. The app provided the time, weather, battery life, quick call access and easy taps to HERE Drive + and Nokia Music. It was not only well done, but seemingly very useful for when you are otherwise occupied with driving.

The problem is, we never really saw that app materialize in the Nokia Collection. Well, as it turns out, it comes with the Nokia Accessories app (found under Settings) and is in fact, hidden. The app can evidently only be activated by scanning an NFC tag that is found on Nokia’s CR-200 car mount and is similar to the Desktop App that is only accessible by Nokia’s Qi chargers. That $100 car mount though is hard to find and let’s be honest, quite pricey.

App Highlights has been Nokia's way to show customers which content is worth checking out on the Windows Phone Store. Showcasing the best apps and games, not only from the manufacturer but also third party developers, it was a superb way to keep up-to-date with latest trends. Today we've been informed that Nokia has merged App Highlights with App Social, with the former being removed from existence.

Summer is in full swing up here in the northern hemisphere. Depending on your location, this might be the only time of the year where you can really get outdoors and enjoy activities (I’m looking at you Seattle). We have a handful of great apps to track your workouts on Windows Phone (like Runtastic), but Active Fitness is a new one that has some pretty cool features that you’ll want to check out.

Just over a week ago, Nokia pushed out a new app to their Collection with the title Nokia YouTube Upload for the Nokia Lumia 1020. While it doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, it is admirably descriptive of its sole purpose: taking videos off of your Lumia and directly posting them to the popular video site. In a hands on demonstration, we noted that the app would upload the full version of your video over Wi-Fi though cellular connections would require a shorter video or waiting until Wi-Fi was present.

We’re not entirely into the idea of “selfies” aka the practice of photographing yourself and posting it to social networks, but we know many people are these days. Nokia released their Glam Me app earlier this year after a Mobile World Congress announcement for this exact purpose, hopefully appealing to the youth crowd. The app is for taking self-shots but it has the added bonus of an onboard editor for making your face all pretty-like.

Nokia just pushed out version 1.5.5.12 of the app today and boy did it get a makeover itself. The app now has numerous new features that are really interesting, even if you have no plans for a “selfie” anytime soon.

During Nokia’s Lumia 925 event back in May it was revealed that Hipstamatic Oggl (hipstamatic.com/oggl) would be coming exclusively to Lumia Windows Phones, allowing the more serious photographer out there to share their images on the Hipstamatic network.

Previously available only on iOS and powered by filters and lenses, the potent photo network also allows users to post directly to Instagram via a deal reached with the company in mid-2012.  Besides Instagram, Facebook and Twitter support are also included.

Now with the Nokia Lumia 1020 officially released today on AT&T, Oggl (for Windows Phone 8 Lumias) and Oggl Pro (for the Lumia 1020) will be available today as well.

Nokia has today unveiled a new application for the UK on Windows Phone. JobLens, exclusively available for Lumia hardware, enables job seekers to view more than 500,000 available job vacancies in the UK. Powered by big names in the industry, JobLens is set to open up new functionality to consumers. But there’s “lens” in the title so it should support augmented reality, right? Correct, this is a big one, folks.

Nokia has published to the store their YouTube Video Upload app that enables users to simply and easily post their video creations to their accounts.

The app loads just fine on the Nokia Lumia 1020, which means this app may be exclusive to that device initially. Though being Nokia, we’re sure that they will deliver for their other Lumia line as they’re pretty good like that.

Nokia already has a plethora of apps available in the Nokia Collection, but the manufacturer isn't halting with what's currently available. Video Trimmer is an app we covered at the Lumia 1020 launch event, which enables consumers to conveniently shorten videos. All it takes is some magic and some sliding controls to cut down the duration to a single clip.

Windows Phone 7 users must be feeling a bit left out of the Xbox gaming fun lately. We spent the majority of last week celebrating the release of Halo: Spartan Assault and publishing detailed strategy guides for Order & Chaos Online, both excellent Windows Phone 8 games. But what are the Microsoft mobile users who haven’t upgraded to Windows Phone 8 yet going to play?

Former Nokia exclusives, of course! Less than two weeks ago, Chillingo’s pretty decent Picnic Wars became available to all brands of Windows Phone. And just a few days ago, two more games dropped their exclusivity: Flight Control Rocket and Blobster. If you liked the first Flight Control, you’re going to love FC Rocket! Oh, and Blobster. Yayyyy.

Read on for details on both games and an updated list of current and former Nokia Collection exclusives!
