Nokia EOS 41MP Windows Phone shows up in Red as well

We’ve known for a little while that the upcoming Lumia ‘EOS’, Nokia’s first foray into a massive-shooter for Windows Phone, will come in the same color lineup as the current 920 that it is based off of. Yesterday we saw the phone in black but we know yellow and other variants are available too.

Now a new image has leaked of what looks to be the EOS in a glossy red finish. This isn’t the full phone, of course, but rather just the polycarbonate shell which is evidently in early production tests in some Nokia factory.

With the phone coming in various colors and that 41MP PureView expected to be on board, Nokia (and Microsoft) could have a headline device here.

AT&T is expected to have a 3 month exclusive on this phone, which may launch as early as July. But those details have yet to be confirmed, meaning we still know less than we think about this and other EOS devices.

Don't worry. It's a meme, not an insult.

I love it when people use the original.

weisman87 says:

I don't understand why people can't get the fact that a 41MP sensor is huge. Did everyone honestly expect Nokia to shrink that huge sensor down enough to make it look like the 920's? Come on. It is a physical limitation that, whether you like it or not, is extremely difficult to get around. Say you "need" the 41MP camera, but then complain when you get it and it's big? Pick your poison, that's your only choice here.

Sean D. says:

They don't understand the concept of "trade off's".

Same type of people who want quad core processors, big, giant, 1080p super AMOLED screens, Wi-Fi always on... and cry about battery life.

sholokov says:

Actually this is how you push the limits of design. And this is where "outside the box" thinking comes in. Nokia has that quality. Look what they did when they couldn't float the little lens in L920, they floated the whole camera instead.

xconomicron says:

YES! You are like the .01% on here that get it! ... you know how the mobile world works!

bbennett40 says:

There are more of us that "get it". It's just the noisy ones ate the ones that don't.

tony1213 says:

Preach! Man thank you!

cgold1 says:

The sensor is huge. The megapixel count doesn't determine the sensor size of a camera (or the quality). That said 41 megapixels in a 1/3.2" sensor would be pointless. The 808 had a 1/1.2" sensor. Most p&s cameras have a 1/2.3" sensor.

Read how 808 Pureview works. Its 3/5/8 MP photo, with 41MP camera = Lossless zooming, No noise

aitt says:

Get over it. Smdh. Do we really have to beat a dead horse?

ahmadcrofton says:

That's what "I" said... Hehe

I agree completely! People cry that the size of the sensor warrants such a large hole, but they obviously didn't take a good look at the phone. The camera isn't centered in the massive hole, so it obviously doesn't take up the whole of it. I would have preferred a hump similar to the 808 or n8.

Sean D. says:

ATT exclusives piss me off beyond belief.

Lol thanks for making me laugh. When I read that comment I found myself using the emperors voice from star wars.

I have such strong opinions on this exclusivity bs that would make children cry and old ladies faint if I voiced them out loud.

xconomicron says:

Lol I saw a post on pocketnow the other day over the first EOS rumor that some guy threw his wallet at the monitor and needed a new monitor after. I could not stop lol'ing.

Credo93 says:

Daniel where is the rumored Instagram news? I know you say that it will not come but i think now it's pretty legit news..

Greetzz.

I saw that rumor. We had a story ready and I killed it.

Your concept of "pretty legit" is far below my standards, sorry!

Hey Dan its just been announced that Diablo III is coming to Xbox 360 in September ...would this be wpcentral worthy for an article??

Tipped them on the same news few hours ago who knows if they will make an article.

I think it would be good as an article we could just post DIABLO III COMING TO XBOX 360 IN SEPTEMBER on every article comment lol

chrgeorgeson says:

New rumor made up by me!
Instant-Grams. It's a service the Nokia is starting that will allow you to select the cracker of your choice (as long as it's a Gram Cracker) and have it delivered to your house personally from Jessica Alba.
It's coming on the 26th of this month.
Again this is a reliable source that this will be happening.

sholokov says:

Reliable source?

Did he stutter?

IamDefiler says:

I thought it would be an app for taking pics of your Grandmothers.

Well I just want Jessica Alba lol

Credo93 says:

Lol she's mine, hah :(

IamDefiler says:

I've never seen WPCentral give a rumor rating of "1". This would be worthy of a "1", no?

Damn it! What is it with the commenting system and me needing to refresh the page after every post? When I post then try to post again it claims I need to enter text to post a comment. Then I have to type everything back in again after hitting F5. Grrrr.

Rich Edmonds says:

It's not that we're attempting to annoy you as we have to refresh too, lol. The web team will be addressing the issue :-)

IamDefiler says:

LOL! I would hope not. Cool. Just making sure you guys knew. Thanks!

Didn't you read the posts from the other articles replying to you yesterday?
A) A lot of phones have seperate GPU's (like the 808) has that do all the graphical/image processing/rendering.  They will most likely use the same setup as the 808.  Go do research on Broadcom's videocore GPU's.)
B) Using the ISP on the actual SoC consumes A LOT OF BATTERY POWER!  With the S800 having a dual ISP unit, I think battery life would be absolute horrendous on a 2000mAh battery on a phone like this.  The S800 is going to be utilized more in Tablets and Phablets where battery life is more abundant.
C)  It makes sense that Nokia would use the same sensor as the 808.  It took them 5+ years to develop the 808 sensor.  I honestly don't think Nokia's engineers have developed a new sensor within a year's timeframe.  (That doesn't mean a new sensor is in works right now, it just means that we probably won't be seeing it anytime soon).
D) Nokia always marks their prototypes with the letters "XX" so that it cannot show competitors the actual MP range if there were leaks (like the ones we have seen).  They did that with the N8/808.  AND it is obvious with this on the GSMArenas leaked photos that it actually does have the MP marked, but is clearly blacked out so we cannot see the actual MP range.
E) (You stated this already...I'm just elaborating a little more). The more hardware you have in a phone like this eg (newer SoC, more RAM/ROM, 1080p, bigger screen..etc), the more likely this phone will be expensive to manufacture and more expensive to the consumer and ultimately consume more battery life.

Go Nokia! Show how to create hot and sexy phones without being black and "industrial".

I don't get why so many people hate on black. Black is a good color. Not everyone wants a colorful phone that stands out.

You must be one of those suits from Verizon not wanting those "hippie colours". Haha Anyone who reads WP Central too much will get this!

I can't stand my phone to have such an "in your face" attitude. Black never gets annoying. Other colors, especially really bright ones, do.

My cyan 920 never gets annoying!

jcagga says:

Not red on myb8x

Rishicash says:

It's only because most of the phones we've been looking at for years are black and we have "black fatigue.'

xaeryan says:

So THAT'S what my wife is referring to...

Jayflip says:

Looks good in red, yellow and black, I wonder if it'll be a cyan one

Jf.Vigor says:

*know in last paragraph. Unless I misread your intent

neonspark says:

another ATT exclusive? please! stop it nokia. you need to sell on verizon if you hope to catch up marketshare wise.

Noahma says:

Nokia is probably getting some pretty good coin for the exclusives. Which is ok in my mind, anything to keep them on there feet

Strangis says:

I'm sure Nokia would like to have the phone everywhere, but they don't have the clout in North America that Apple or Samsung does, so they kind of have to do these deals.  The Lumia line right now is roughly where the Samsung Galaxy line was in 2010, with variants on the major carriers.
Once they have more market share, they should be able to have a broader release schedule.

Mingu7 says:

If it's true that the AT&T exclusive is only for 3 months, this is a huge deal.

The 920 had AT&T exclusivity for 6 long months... which is almost a death sentence in the fast-moving mobile world.  Moving down to 3 months means that Nokia is gaining a bit of clout.  It takes clout for a phone manufacturer to have the US carriers goto THEM instead of the other way around.  Samsung had to play the same game until the Galaxy line matured into a must-have brand.

Despite the frustration, I think the 928 showed that exclusivity can work out.  The 920 generated alot of buzz and anticipation.  Now people on Verizon can finally snag the 928.  That anticipation and buzz is pure gold for someone in Nokia's position of being the underdog who hasn't had a presence in the US for years.  This gives them the chance to manage their growth, lineup manufacturing capacity, etc.

I'm really excited to see how this EOS story pans out.

nizzon says:

What's up with all the leaks? Not sure I like it.

Rishicash says:

You do. You know you do. You make like it now, but you'll learn to love it later!

wpguy says:

Could be intentional. Look at all the free advertising Nokia gets out of them.

mister2d says:

This isn't Apple.

Noahma says:

I'm going to have to wait for the second version :( still have quote a bit of time on my 920's contract

dreonedon says:

My first impression of this phone was not good I had made a rant saying its ugly and bulky but I was very wrong I'm now seeing images and screen sizes that I like this might be my next Windows Phone bye bye 920

Sarang68 says:

Wonder what's that tiny hole there besides the slot in the 3rd & 4th photo ,which itself is a bit odd shaped?

schlubadub says:

Isn't that for the noise reduction technology? I think the 920's have them IIRC

DaddyLikey says:

What are the rumored specs on these? Are they just Lumia 920s with a 41mp camera or do they have other upgraded internals?

tony1213 says:

Yes I believe this version hardware is similar to the 920's except the cam.

Minus the built in charging most likely...

erzhik says:

Threw a bottle of quarters at my monitor, broke my monitor, my TV and killed my cat.

bono5112 says:

Still pissed there's no built in wireless charging, 41 pix is great but 41 pix with "built in" wireless charging WELL now your talking

tony1213 says:

I hate to say but I kind of agree with u! Just don't wanna believe it right now. But hopes are not too high right now

xaeryan says:

I'm with you. Already bought various chargers and the JBL speaker while on sale in anticipation of picking up EOS... Don't wanna ruin the phones form factor with a cover. :(

paulheu says:

I am still doubtful this will be a 41MPx sensor as I do not see Nokia bringing Qualcom S800 devices to te table just yet. Current hardware does not support >20Mpx sensors and the design does not allow for add-on processing like they did in the 808.

The fact that XX mega pixel (in Roman numerals) as we see on the prototype photos is also equal to 20 it would make more sense.

Personally I would expect this to be a L920 evolution with the same SoC, but maybe more RAM and more storage (2GB and 32/64 GB respectively). This phone will also not come cheap and probably be close to iPhone5 pricing (around $800/$900 for 64 GB outright).

IMO this phone will pave the way for the same if not better technology to trickle down to lower price points when the next gen of WP hardware arrives in oct/nov this year.

cgold1 says:

If the sensor is the same size as the 808's then the quality will be basically the same (less resolution, more dynamic range). As its image sensor size that really matters the most. (lenses count too of course)

IamDefiler says:

They could just add an additional chip to handle the increased MP's. HTC added a chip to their 8x to offload imaging. I'm sure Nokia could do the same.

xconomicron says:

Thanks for the pics and info over last 24hours Daniel, great job

Ok, now you're just being mean...all these rumors and pix are killing me. Release the darn phone already (so we can get v2 out by Christmas lol)

ot food mate, but glorious photography!

onysi says:

My god that is fucking glorious!! Fuck u aTT!

Alex Zapata says:

Hmmmm, I still have my doubts that it will be a 41MP sensor, but I don't doubt that it will be amazing. Unless Nokia magically got GDR3 before anyone else I don't think any of the supported WP8 hardware can handle that. I could be wrong though.

onysi says:

So the back of the phone is somewhat like a wireless charging? How does it work?

ejlee072006 says:

Im blown away by the design... Hold does is still has wireless charging!!! Wow.. My upgrade is U!!!

Tegument says:

hopefully red means that verizon will be getting it as well?

Tegument says:

hopefully red means we'll see this device on verizon as well?! :)

wpguy says:

Hmmm.... Go for the 925 or wait for the TMoUS variant, because by then maybe LTE will be available in my area....

ninjaap says:

Excellent! I'll wait 3 months after release and Amazon should have it for a penny by then! :)

mister2d says:

What I see is an extra long horizontal slit at the top of the phone. It's too long for just a SIM card slot. Could this be an SD slot as well?  :)

jcagga says:

You would know instinctively that this thing will have sd card supported or comes with 64gb with 41 mp camera....

xaeryan says:

I don't think it's "instinctive" on either point.

mister2d says:

I don't think you know what you wrote.

DavidinCT says:

I know it will have a high end camera but, I would not touch it with the bulk of the lenses. Seems too bulky and would not fit in a pocket with out a lump...No thanks
I want a phone to do everything but, it also has to fit in a pocket with out making me unconfortable...

jcagga says:

Just how tight is your jean?

xaeryan says:

He must sport a chubby all the time to worry about the extra few mm. ;)

paulxxwall says:

I get it but I don't like that big ol hump I guess I don't need 41mp in my phone just one bad a$% enough but still keep the phone sleek looking not sleek with a hump on the back .....kinda like a hot blonde hunch back of notre dame

If I buy this phone, I won't ever need a Camera.

It's a smart camera. ;)

uopjo6 says:

Was expecting another form factor from Nokia. The hump just doesn't match the aesthetics of the 920 at all. A rectangle maybe but a circle just looks like an attachment on a 920, far from Nokia design standards. (IMO).
The smooth extrusion from top to bottom is what makes the 920 look sleek and sexy. Now it's got a big hump on it all of a sudden like it grew a big zit. Hope EOS2 (?) will be better.

paulxxwall says:

I'm with you it may have 100000000000000000mp but it still look funky from the back no sleekness at all except the front of it

ihavewp8 says:

oh yes say bye bye to android S4 or other crappy androids and gay iPhones users. This phone going to be sold out quick windows phone is going to be #1 again soon when this 41mp smartphone comes out in public. Wait until copycaters of android or iphone does the same.

TashiJLE says:

Ok, so I was soo upset when I dropped, thereby smashing my glass and digitizer on my 920, and ultimately breaking the phone. But Nokia has given me hope with this 'EOS' phone. Have to get a Qi cover, as I wouldn't want to waste my free charger, (though my wife uses it currently with her 920). Further more, was forced to get black if I wanted it then (non, last November). Now I have choices ( I hope). AT&T better give me early upgrade!
